bap··on Fed helpless as US economy faces structural challenges, not monetary
Because I'm.. not young.. all throughout my education we were 'awarded' 4 points for an A, 3 for B and so forth to calculate Grade Point Average (GPA.)

Due to this system I have always considered A > B > C, etc.

Some of my children lived under a different regime in elementary school, which common core and non-letter grading assessments. Target, Near Target and Below Target.

A = 1, B = 2 reminds me of cryptography for some reason. That's probably due to reading Neal Stephenson.

bap··on Living Computers Museum to permanently close, auction vintage items
I think you might find that the larger metropolitan areas are as you say. As one gets away from the coasts and into more rural areas you'll find smaller museums. Museums that are very bespoke and/or focused on a narrower curation target, etc.
bap··on Show HN: A self-published art book about Google's first 25 years
Marques Brownlee recently published a video about the Humane AI Pin (device) [1] and I noticed this book in some of the device shots, found it curious and had (incorrectly it seems) assumed it was some kind of internal Google swag.

Well played Mr. da Maia :)

bap··on Cow Magnets
My father owned a rural feed store until I was 6 or 7 years old (the early 80's.)

Other than incubators full of chicks and ducklings, and bottle feeding young livestock fresh from auction - swiping cow magnets off the shelf to play with was a favorite pass-time. :)

In those days I can't imagine anyone really cared what happened to the magnets after they went into the cow.

Perhaps something happens in the slaughter house to clear out whatever has gotten into the gut and stomachs - for the sake of meat grinding machinery?

bap··on Show HN: Presentations for your webcam, not a projector
Hi! I'm the VP, Eng at mmhmm and I would love to hear more about your experience with us. :)
bap··on Have You Ever Tried to Sell a Diamond? (1982)
This bit of context is a bit more robust than most you offer @dang - do you have some tool?
bap··on Show HN: Looptap – A minimal game to waste your time
Fantastic.

Feature Request: I'd love to see the ratio of successful points to number of times the ball traverses the circle. I think others have already said things about scoring mechanisms for faster taps, I wonder if there could be one around a sweet spot on the line (earlier is better? Later?!)

Well done, you've made me late for a meeting!

bap··on How I think I want to drop modern Python packages into a single program
Valid point, I hadn’t considered it. Thank you!
bap··on How I think I want to drop modern Python packages into a single program
Thanks!
bap··on How I think I want to drop modern Python packages into a single program
Would love to hear your thoughts on pipenv as a real-world user of python environments. I leave it on the table that your current solution just works and you have never considered pipenv. ( I am not associated with pipenv. I've seemingly organically gravitated to it lately. )
bap··on The Legend of GayBlade
Perhaps this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorro,_The_Gay_Blade
bap··on An industrious mouse tidies up a retired electrician’s tool shed each night
Yep, this one is Mr. Frisby. The rest were rats.
bap··on Coffee Is Hard
If you download it from the wrong mirror..
bap··on Ask HN: Good Remote Work Literature?
Seconding this!
bap··on Craig Newmark’s New Hit List
legit personal reference - if you don't know who Jeremy is already. ;)
bap··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (December 2018)
I wish I was hiring right now :D
bap··on Ask HN: Have you ever inherited a codebase nobody on the team could understand?
You are now in the platform business.

I have to assume someone is using the software therefore there is some tribal knowledge of what it does? Otherwise this is maybe SAAS software that users use and some functionality is exposed that would allow you to begin decomposing backwards toward expected input/output. You're almost black-boxing at that point.

I will admit that I have, on very rare occasion, scream tested a piece of software running on a server that nobody would claim ownership or knowledge of either on the eng. team or within the org.

bap··on Ask HN: Have you ever inherited a codebase nobody on the team could understand?
Have you used input/output proxy logging shims in these situations? They've been so invaluable to be in finding those weird edge cases that come up in 'orphaned software' projects as well as 'ancient legacy platform' migrations ;)
bap··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2018)
You mean 2019 :]
bap··on Um – Create your own man pages so you can remember how to do stuff
As someone who runs terminal obsessed engineering organizations I can see a wider implication for team docs. Would love a distributed version of this. I suppose we could do something with git, etc but the sync cycle would inevitably kill forward momentum of usage. Bonus points for a web server for those who aren't terminal obsessed.
bap··on Thundra: AWS Lambda Observability for Java, Go and Node.js
This is very timely for me and Good Work!

Now PLEASE tell me your logo will be a cat?? (Yes I can see that you seem to going for 'bird' sigh)

bap··on The Empathy Gap in Tech: Interview with a Software Engineer
In case you're interested and aren't already aware:

UC Davis seems to be investing a bit in ASD research. This one, for instance, focuses on girls:

http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/mindinstitute/research/gain/ind...

..and there are a few others. Most focus on the intersection of Children and Autism in some form or another.

Alternatively SciAm ran an article a while back around just this issue of how and why we're "missing it" when it comes to recognizing ASD early (or at all) for girls.

bap··on How to Write Articles and Essays Quickly and Expertly (2006)
Prolific, be definition, speaks to volume and not quality? How does proof-reading contradict?

I would say that his lack of quality (dropped T on The ;] Yes I saw them too ) is perhaps supportive of his ability to be prolific "[...]make your first draft, your final draft."

I understand that you are saying that quality of edit indicates quality of thought or insight to you.

bap··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2017)
I'm pretty excited to see this get off the ground, are you planning on U.S. Market or concentrating on Asia/Australia?

I'm you're fighting an uphill battle of 'just another vending machine' but IoT, app integrated, food robot! Automated Micro-Restaurant?

bap··on Revisited: Watership Down
When I was in my late teens and doing security things on the internet (1992/93) I used the handle Silverweed and everyone assumed it was a pot reference.
bap··on [dead]
% of AWS spend is, in my experience (CTO level stuff,) fairly common for AWS ecosystem vendors. It isn't a terrible proxy for complexity of deployment AND is easy for customer to calculate.
bap··on Beej's Guide to C Programming (2007)
Beej was a couple years ahead of me at Chico - he was an awesome guy then and it looks like he's been keeping at it ever since.
bap··on Founder Friendly
> (4) would pull a Zuck and surround themselves with more established/senior people (e.g. Sandberg) as they hit those milestones.

Please recall the entire context:

Thiel stated early and often (as Facebook's earliest investor) that he would stand behind Zuck retaining majority control. Based on this support there was no other option than to provide Zuck with all the support, mentorship and education he would need to scale along with FB.

Zuck had unflinching VC support :)

bap··on Angie's List Acquired for $500M by IAC
Diller is the chairman of the board. Levin has been CEO and running g day to day operations for a bit now.

That being said it's important to understand that IAC businesses are run fairly independently. Many (most?) have their own CEOs, etc.

Barry Diller had tried to get an acquisition of Angie's List before IIRC.
