bananicorn··on JSX in detail
They work something like this in LISPs, right? Like, can you define new language constructs with them?

http://www.red-lang.org/2016/12/entering-world-of-macros.htm...

(BTW, have a look at red for desktop apps, it's not even at 1.0 and already fucking amazing)

But on topic; Are Macros a well-defined "thing"? Since a macro in C, seems to be rather different from a RED or LISP Macro.

Or is it just that C macros are essentially the same, just more restricted?

bananicorn··on Lisp Machine Manual (1984)
It might just boil down to the fact that programs of some complexity in almost any language are hard to read, even more so when you're a beginner in said language and might not even know its coding/formatting conventions...

PS: The Part regarding Fiat is interesting, because we have a similar saying in Germany, namely: "Fehler in allen Teilen", which translates to "Errors in every part".

I have really no idea about the statistics about fiat reliability though, so don't take that as a statement from me^^

bananicorn··on Ask HN: Has anyone used a HURD-based system before?
Did you install it on hardware or in a VM?

And damn, I've always wanted to give Plan9 a shot too, mainly just because I really like the "Everything is a file" approach^^

bananicorn··on Ask HN: Best features of your favourite language?
Red: amazingly easy gui creation and cross compilation. There's a lot to like about that language and its toolset.

Following somewhere after that, are JS's prototypes, my first introduction to inheritance.

But then again, I don't know that many Languages and barely touched red. I'm only waiting for their gui backend on linux and then I'll dive right into the language.

bananicorn··on This VR cycle is dead
That's pretty cool actually - I wonder how well the booze pairs with the VR though.
bananicorn··on This VR cycle is dead
I think VR might need something akin to the arcade halls of early video games to get people interested - a place where people can try the tech, but as a much more well-rounded experience, if someone went ahead and created something people actually wanted to try, but maybe couldn't afford, I think there'd be a market for this. Just not yet in the personal consumer market. Not yet.

Why exactly? He just provided you with some facts, along with a logical suggestion.
bananicorn··on Billionaires and big ag are joining venture investors to fund lab-grown meat
Why did the other comment down here get downvoted? Is there anything wrong with it?

He states fair points, as far as I can see.

bananicorn··on Billionaires and big ag are joining venture investors to fund lab-grown meat
I do wonder though if this lab-grow meat will be allowed to be called meat, since there was a strange ruling about Vegan dairy products[0].

It seems that this is less likely to receive such a treatment, since it's much closer to the actual thing in terms of composition, but beyond Meat might be given a harder time there, since their product is plant-based...

bananicorn··on Ask HN: What is your current Linux distro and why did you choose it?
Couldn't agree more (mostly on the part that Pacman and the AUR are amazing).

I was so intimidated by the whole "build your own system" philosophy, that I never tried, and it was only after asking on HN for advice[0] that I finally gave it a shot.

Software-wise the best decision of my life so far.

It also taught me that "RTFM" is often the best solution, and that man pages are there for a reason.

bananicorn··on Ask HN: Why HN logo not in SVG?
It could get re-used as part of the logo on the main y-combinator site, and the same logo could be cached ;)

But then again, HN itself is already easily fast enough, and you don't optimize when you don't have to.

But probably not worth the effort - the extra CSS might mess up the equation.

bananicorn··on Show HN: Tiny cross-platform webview library for C/Golang
Could this be used with local html files?

And if so, does it handle JS as well?

That'd be a viable option for some simple electron projects then...

It's pretty cool either way, I might use it sometime :)

bananicorn··on What are the best programming language tutorials?
I'd have to go with the drRacket one on this: http://docs.racket-lang.org/quick/index.html

I really like it if I can mess around with visual stuff quite soon when learning a new language.

bananicorn··on Vulnerabilities in Car Washes
There's a url field when submitting which makes the whole title a link to your article btw :)
bananicorn··on Ask HN: What is the biggest obstacle with surfing the web without JavaScript?
Because JavaScript often unnecessarily loads MBs of data, without contributing much to the experience - oftentimes being detrimental to the user's experience, like loading annoying ads. It mostly comes down to speed and a lot less annoyances on some sites.
bananicorn··on Spoilerwall: Respond to port scanning requests with movie spoilers
Maybe: "This statement is a lie"?
bananicorn··on Ask HN: Is there a Market for low-spec laptops with long battery life?
For me personally that's a bit of a bummer, but as long as installing linux isn't impossible and there's no malicious firmware blobs which could possibly brick the thing, it's not a complete no-go. I also prefer to test my software on the actual low-end hardware instead of VMs.
bananicorn··on Ask HN: Is there a Market for low-spec laptops with long battery life?
It didn't even come to my mind that people who are not developers could want anything other than a tablet or a phone nowadays do you think the longer battery life would be worth the bigger form-factor for people? (I kinda get mixed signals from people whenever I ask, so I'm not sure at all)
bananicorn··on Star Citizen is likely in financial trouble
Should kickstarter have a clause for failed software projects to be open sourced/the source code/assets be given to the backers? (Not sure what the non-technical users could do with it, but at least they could get what work has been done so far) Of course I'm not implying Star Citizen has failed, this is just a general thought
bananicorn··on Ask HN: What would you do if you didn't need money to live?
Honestly, I'd be making videogames. No time pressure, no pressure to get anything done, just making them, maybe polishing them as well if I feel like it :) Maybe go on a hike with nothing but the stuff I need to survive, and pencil and paper. Then repeat it with my girlfriend and her dog. And move to the seaside somewhere warm - I can't stand the winter. Be an old man, I guess^^
bananicorn··on Ask HN: What linux distro should I start with?
That's actually what I did on my previous PC, (with cygwin and mingw), but cross-compiling was kind of a pain in the ass, so I'm really looking forward to the native linux tools for handling that :)
bananicorn··on Ask HN: What linux distro should I start with?
A small update on my current situation: I've successfully(?) installed arch, but I'm still setting everything up, but the internet is accessible without problems. I'm struggling with the video drivers, but that's mostly since I never had to install any on linux. I'm also learning a LOT.

At the same time I'm tempted to try out almost all distros mentioned here (even gentoo, to really get the hang of compiling and makefiles), but I'll probably try and set up Arch first, until I'm happy with it and then maybe mess around with other distros on another partition, or in a VM (but probably on another PC). Obviously armed with all the knowledge gained in the process.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions, and I hope I'll get around to trying them all one day :)

Until then, I'll continue configuring (and maybe borking) my Arch install and enjoy the discussion taking place here.

PS: The arch documentation is AMAZING.

bananicorn··on Essential Products – Andy Rubin’s new hardware company
There also seems to be a new smart home device in the making, just click on the right icon in the header. Not sure if that's actually new or if I just misclicked...
bananicorn··on Ask HN: What linux distro should I start with?
Actually, I might be able to use the ram from my "old" laptop, which has just died a week ago, so I think I'll give it at least a try. Thanks!
bananicorn··on Ask HN: What linux distro should I start with?
Now I'm armed with two sticks - one with the official Arch distro, and one with manjaro, in case I don't manage to get regular arch working. I'll probably stick to the first distro I can get running with i3, working wireless and gcc, so arch probably has a good chance to be my final choice (if I like pacman)
bananicorn··on Ask HN: What linux distro should I start with?
I found this site here[0], that should come in handy for testing different distros:

[0]http://livecdlist.com/

bananicorn··on Ask HN: What linux distro should I start with?
I'm a bit hesitant to try arch, since it seems quite daunting to start with such a trimmed down distro - and yet I really like the idea.

The hardest part will probably be setting up the wireless connection, and getting the WM set up. Do you think arch is suitable for a relative beginner?

bananicorn··on Ask HN: What linux distro should I start with?
I've already run puppy linux from a thumb drive on it, but I'm not too keen on the whole OS running in RAM, even though it worked really smoothly.

I'll give xububtu or lubuntu a try though :) Edit: fixed typo

bananicorn··on Minecraft arrives on the Nintendo Switch
>or up to four can play together in a split-screen view on the TV from a single console

I didn't even expect that, honestly.

Also I wonder if minecraft still runs java underneath - probably yes, but you never know.

bananicorn··on Why founders are so fond of The Alchemist?
Maybe it's just a good book - it doesn't have to be helpful to be good, right? Also, are we talking about The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho [0]?
