bananasbandanas··on Nobel Prize in Physics 2026: Francis Halzen
Logistics is much easier for Greenland, but the optical properties of the ice are not as good as at the south pole.
bananasbandanas··on Nobel Prize in Physics 2026: Francis Halzen
We hire two people to stay over the winter and operate the detector each year. No icecube affiliation or physics background required, although a technical background helps.

bananasbandanas··on Oru Kayak’s reckless and irresponsible advertising
While it's shoddy statistics, at least in this case the implied effect seems to be real. According to these two sources [1][2] that just came up when I searched for this, prevalence of wearing life-jackets among kayakers appears to be ~78%.

bananasbandanas··on Study Shows Anti-Piracy Ads Often Made People Pirate More
Maybe they list them to get Google hits when people search for them?
bananasbandanas··on 43 km line of sight with USB WiFi stick (2005)
Given a good control link such as ExpressLRS [0], people can also fly quadcopters 10+ kilometers on as little as 10 mW. See for example the range competition at [1].

Of course, the VTX is usually a different matter..

bananasbandanas··on NewPipe: A lightweight YouTube experience for Android
For the Sponsorblock browser addons you can configure them to only show you a button to skip the segments if you like. I'm not sure if that option is available in Vanced or the NewPipe Sponsorblock fork.
bananasbandanas··on Thank You, Valve
According to that post, 0.75% (3/400).
bananasbandanas··on Display-switch: Turn a $30 USB switch into a full-featured multi-monitor KVM
Couldn't display-switch send a keypress (something that doesn't do much otherwise, like F15) automatically?

You could probably get that result at the moment using the external command feature and something like xdotool (on Linux)

bananasbandanas··on Free SVG images and icons, released under Creative Commons CC0
I can also recommend https://game-icons.net. As the name suggests, it mostly focuses on icons for games, but I find a lot of them are also usefull for other purposes. Most importantly they have a consistent style, so your stuff looks less like you've thrown-together art from 19 different sources.
bananasbandanas··on I hate password rules

bananasbandanas··on The latest campus cancellation is different
I think you are conflating popularity of an argument with popularity as part of an argument. For the former, it's easy to agree that it does not affect the correctness of the argument. But in the articles case, popularity is part of the argument: That it is especially worrying the speaker is uninvited for an opinion which is held by a majority of people, i.e is popular.

Another example of this would be if we were having an argument about what music to play at some event we are hosting. I might well use the popularity of some songs as an argument.

bananasbandanas··on DIY RGB Icosahedron
> I attempted to assemble a board bey placing LEDs at 90 degrees, but ultimately this was a failure, the pads look reasonably symmetrical, but they’re not exactly.
bananasbandanas··on GM tells some Bolt owners to park 50 feet away from other cars
Every ICE car I've ever driven did exactly that with the 'reserve' where the needle is already at (or below) the zero line but you still get about 50 km of range.
bananasbandanas··on Feeling like a pariah, even when you’re not
I had an experience that drove the second point home for me.

We were doing a white water kayak course. At this school it was tradition at the end of each day to paint one of our fingernails for each time you capsized. First day, our group was kind of smug about the fact that we only got maybe one or so each, while another group had basically both hands painted already. So we said something to that effect to our trainer, and he just says 'Yeah, because they are trying way harder to push their limits.'.

He was right of course, and the next day we took way more risks as well. Made the whole thing even more fun, and it was definitely a good lesson.

bananasbandanas··on How a carnivorous mushroom poisons its prey
I'm unsure if it even applies in your case, but there is the risk of inadvertently creating botulism when storing garling in oil [1]. Since you are refigerating and adding acid, I'd expect it's probably not an issue.

bananasbandanas··on Thoughts Around Naming Variables
I agree to some extent of course. If there really are meaningful concepts for intermediates or the whole formula, especially if you are applying it to a specific domain, you should name them.

(I also just looked up the equations and noticed the formula I gave was just completely wrong, so please don't implement a kalman filter like that.)

bananasbandanas··on Thoughts Around Naming Variables
For maths, the problem just sometimes lives in a deeper level of abstraction where you need to understand the problem anyway to make any meaningful changes to the code. So I don't think you'd really gain anything by renaming the kalman gain calculation from

K = dot(dot(H, dot(P, H.T)) + R, inv(S))

to

kalman_gain = dot(dot(measurement_function, dot(covariance_matrix, measurement_function.T) + measurement_noise_covariance, inv(system_uncertainty))

because if you don't know what any of these things are by reading up on the theory, the names (or I believe any others) aren't going to help you figure out how a kalman filter works.

bananasbandanas··on The Mars Helicopter Is Online and Getting Ready to Fly
If you're interested in some fiction with this concept: In Neal Stephenson's 'Diamond Age' humans have mastered assembly of individual atoms in basically arbitrary ways. They use it (among other things) to create flying airships with an envelope made of diamond with a vacuum inside. Found it to be a fun read in general.
bananasbandanas··on United B772 at Denver on Feb 20th 2021, engine inlet separates from engine
There is a now a comment on that article where the ground observer identifies himself and gives a few more details, so looks like you're right.

> 1) I was giving Simon a heads up to look for a report out of DEN - if it was anything, I thought it was just something like a (big) compressor stall. That was why so many caveats were there - I wasn't sure at the time that the aircraft had had a problem. I didn't realize it was going to be widely reported until my mother texted me a couple of hours later asking if any of the plane parts came down close to me

> 2) Something I omitted that I should have put in: After I got home I imagined how many thumb-widths at arm's length it would take to occlude it (from memory), and plugged that into similar triangles and the length of a 737 (didn't realize it was a 777) to get an estimated altitude and got 2-4 thousand meters. I thought the cloud deck was only 2000 feet AGL or so, so I didn't believe the numbers. I did change "a couple" to "a few" though. Turns out it was ~8000 feet AGL. I should have believed more in the math!

bananasbandanas··on Why do printers still suck?
In Germany at least, companies are not allowed to put the printer in 'busy' areas. Starting from a certain company size, a seperate room may even be required. I believe particulates are explicitly given as a reason for this.

I'm also not sure how this would be 'easy' to prevent, without adding a whole sealed enclosure around the printer.

bananasbandanas··on Oppose the Earn IT Act
Seems they are cherry-picking their cases somewhat. This graphic [1] shows a comparison of European countries with Germany pretty much in the middle.

bananasbandanas··on The Death of Couchsurfing?
I just tried to search for my city on BeWelcome to check it out. When I search from the landing page, I get a CSRF token error. When I then try to search again from the search page, I get a 404 /search/map not found. It seems they still have some way to go..
bananasbandanas··on How much space would it take to store every word ever said?
There is (used to be?) an XKCD IRC channel with a bot that only lets you send messages that have never been uttered in the channel before.

bananasbandanas··on Demand for medical equipment is making air cargo fees ‘crazy’
You probably know them, but oshpark is great! You pay by the square inch, which was really fortunate for me because I needed a (very) small pcb for a project, and they made and shipped it to me (to Germany!) for less than 2$ at the time. Though I think they since implemented a lower bound on size/price.

Also, the purple/gold finish is gorgeous.

bananasbandanas··on Smart devices are eating the market for accessibly-priced watches
Unfortunately, the Bip would always randomly crash for me during GPS recording. I got it to record tracks when hiking, and was never able to record more than 5h without it crashing and losing all data.

Too bad, because it was great for the money otherwise.

bananasbandanas··on Show HN: Adventurekeep – A Toolkit for D&D
Looks very cool. Will definitely try it out for mapping out a scenario.

One thing I immediately wanted was a way to link certain lines to different pages. For example, I might come up with a character or other feature of a city on the spot for my players, and want to add it to that citys page to keep track of it for future reference. But I might also want to keep a linear log of what happened (or didn't) to my players. It would be nice if there was a way to link an entry from the city page to the log so I don't need to duplicate manually and everything is kept consistent if I later revise the entry in the city page.

bananasbandanas··on Where is Notepad in Windows 10? (2015)
I used to give basic computer courses for seniors when I was still in highschool to earn a little money.

One would always let go of the mouse to click. He would position the mouse, lift his hand a few centimeters above the mouse button and then press down on it fast. Sometimes worked, mostly didn't because the mouse would move during the click. Now imagine him trying double clicks..

Another guy would make extremely detailed notes. I would show him some setting in a dropdown menu of Word, and he would perfectly draw these menues in his notebook. By the end, he probably hat 20 pages of beautiful notes, it was actually quite impressive.

bananasbandanas··on Irish Teenager Wins Global Science Award for Removing Microplastics from Water
According to this [1] source, only about 2% of microplastics are due to cosmetics. The majority are from synthetic textiles (35%) and tyres (28%).

bananasbandanas··on Understanding Recursion as an Absolute Beginner
Why not?

Just schedule a single health check with a loop that tries to health-check N times in a loop, with a delay in between. If the check succeeds at any point, return 'healthy' early.

Or schedule N health checks at different times, if any check succeeds cancel all others, etc. etc.
