balu··on A Year of BonsaiDb: A retrospective and looking to the future
Will be interesting to see how the feature set works out. I initially thought about the project as a SQLite alternative, but it's intended to be used on servers (e.g. backend of author's MMORPG). Will they focus on that? If so, it could be part of their description.

Anyways, this is well-written and fun to read. Thanks for sharing your journey!

balu··on Ask HN: Best low-/no-code solution for simple web-based database frontends
Not open source, but Ninox is really great once you get used to their UI paradigm that is a little bit different from what everybody else is doing. https://ninox.com/de
balu··on Freelan - an open-source, multi-platform, peer-to-peer VPN software
Not an expert, but TeleHash [1] might be a more lightweight alternative than freelan for a lot of applications.

balu··on Redis 2.4 will be released tomorrow
What's happening on the scripting front? Looked at the network graph at Github, but it does not seem to work currently. There is a branch for 2.2, but not for 2.4.

Scripting is definitely the feature I'm waiting for.

balu··on London Is Gonna Be Pissed, But We Prefer Berlin for Startups
Tacheles will be closed by end of july as far as I know. Last time I was in that area there were a hell lot of cops. The artists living in the building try to fight for their space, but I don't think they'll make it. It's a shame that a lot of these alternative spaces are closed down without thinking to make room for yet another useless shop.
balu··on WeekendHacker.net - A place for very small projects
From the FAQ:

Q: Is it just a mailing list?
A: For now yes. But if people feel the need for something else to be added we will of course do that
balu··on Ordered atomic broadcast capabilities to Riak
This is awesome. I recently played around with riak and thought about using it in a project. What I really appreciate is the simple key-value interface that riak exposes while staying away from assumptions about your data.

It would be awesome if we now could implement strong guarantees like uniqueness using riak_zab in a distributed manner.

balu··on Amplify: a jQuery component library for solving common web problems.
They do mention it. It's a little bit hidden, but see http://amplifyjs.com/community/#pull_requests
balu··on Amplify: a jQuery component library for solving common web problems.
Wow, this is exactly the kind of interface I dislike. It's way too verbose and I'm not sure why one would add this kind of layer on top of jQuery. I don't see where it makes things easier - it's more like it just provides yet another interface.
balu··on Graphical Vim Cheatsheet
Hahah. A graphical cheatsheet for a command line editor. Nice!
balu··on My crazy boss sold everything, bought a boat, and is sailing for an entire year
I'm living in Europe and just have been to the USA for the first time. LA, SF, Vegas - 4 days each plus 6 days NYC (start and end point). I'm not sure you can do even the typical tourist stuff in one day where you don't have to think about where you go.
balu··on My crazy boss sold everything, bought a boat, and is sailing for an entire year
Not a big deal? I actually was a bit scared when reading that. Sure, one person doesn't make the game, but a harbour is full of ships.
balu··on Ask HN: Best way to auto-organize 16GB of pics
Sure I keep them in RAW - because storage is not an issue. Organization is though.
balu··on Ask HN: Best way to auto-organize 16GB of pics
Nice question. I got about 200GB all organized within iPhoto. Size comes from the pictures being mostly saved in RAW. Still, iPhoto becomes slow. I moved the library to an external hd to have free space on my internal one.

I fear the day I got to dig through every picture I made and decide if it is worth keeping or not. :-/

balu··on Offer HN: Grab lunch with the photos team at Facebook
about 18hrs here ;)
balu··on Ask HN: Best Developer Linux Laptop?
I just switched to Ubuntu again - on a two year old Macbook Pro 4,1 though.

To tell a bit about the software side on a Mac: As long as you don't mess with the system, it runs nicely. Recently I wanted to have a look at clutter ("software library for creating (...) graphical user interfaces") which depends on newer versions of the libraries that ship with OS X. After fiddling around with building it myself (or building Formulae for Homebrew which is a simple and nice package manager for OS X) I decided to go with Ubuntu and Awesome as my window manager. There was just too many barriers in the way. For web development, OS X was nice. Unfortunately I'm also toying around with a lot of music software which rarely has an OSS equivalent.

Some points on Apple hardware: The build quality is very nice. It might not have the latest stuff, but all components they ship are well integrated and usually don't get you into hassle (as long as you stick with OS X). I honestly don't want to miss the multitouch trackpad.

Conclusion: If you can live with the system that OS X is, go for it. Perhaps you'll get pissed some day about the missing freedom some day. Don't expect that the hardware in a MacBook will fully supported in a Linux distro

balu··on GitHub founder tells you how to bootstrap a business
Wow. Chris could be talking a little bit slower. Still it's a great talk. Some of things are obvious but do not come to your mind but you recognize them only after someone mentions it.
balu··on The Reddit Island Project
Can you give us more information on your idea? Sounds very interesting. Where is this area?
balu··on Ask HN: Massive vulnerability on Twitter?
Funny though ;-) Those guys are quick!
balu··on Ask HN: Massive vulnerability on Twitter?
That's quite funny. I just wanted to try this out and received an internal server error. Now all my followers are gone nor am I still following anyone. Twitter strikes back!
balu··on An empirical comparison of C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, Rexx, and Tcl
It's always nice to see papers published by my profs on HN. I would not have looked at those on my own.
balu··on Thoughts on an Open Source Company
I really would like to start a company with quite the same rules. Perhaps I should start by getting my ass up and contributing more to open source software.
