balaji1··on Is there an ongoing campaign/lobby for Apple to release iPhone minis?
Same, I want the minis with newer hardware. Hope they release a mini every 3-4 years - definitely want hardware upgrades and latest apps to work. Would signing a petition or something help?

I took off the mag-safe case on my 12 mini after a while yesterday. And it feels even more thinner and lighter.

Actually there isn't a decent Samsung or Motorola smartphone that is small and light.

balaji1··on Why everything you buy is worse now
Some random notes:

Ordering on Amazon without looking at the item. Consumer engineering (planned obsolescence).

Cost cutting to satisfy customer. Swap for cheaper materials like synthetic fabric. Plastic+glue instead of metal+screws.

Stuff that is intentionally impossible to repair.

balaji1··on Ask HN: AI “white mirror” – what are some inspiring future visions you've seen?
A way to mass manufacture eco-friendly fast-decomposing plastics of all types. Would our landfills essentially become trivial to manage at that point?
balaji1··on Ask HN: AI “white mirror” – what are some inspiring future visions you've seen?
Lots of comments think health could be transformed for the better.

I wish AI would help detect, eradicate and replace toxic artificial materials around us. It only impacts health in the second-order or more. And they would need to be significantly incorporated down the supply-chain. But it is necessary.

balaji1··on Ask HN: AI “white mirror” – what are some inspiring future visions you've seen?
The US and increasingly other places around the world use too much nylon, polyester and plastics in general for clothes, garments, carpets, mattresses, furniture and everyday objects.
balaji1··on Ask HN: AI “white mirror” – what are some inspiring future visions you've seen?
AI will bring a nice transition to more eco-friendly, health-friendly and budget-friendly materials incorporated into everyday life. We have way too many toxic materials around us because they are cheap, etc.
balaji1··on Ask HN: AI “white mirror” – what are some inspiring future visions you've seen?
This would suggest some alternative "shortcuts" to good health for a broader population. Instead of the time-consuming approach which includes physical activity, fasting, good nutrition, etc and corresponding things for good mental health.
balaji1··on Ask HN: How do you deal with information and internet addiction?
I do not feel so good about 30 items hitting my brain each time I open HN. (even though I am only scanning, sometimes just filtering by the vote count).

Is there a smaller number like 10 that might make me feel less guilty?

balaji1··on Visual design rules you can safely follow
Such rules are great help for beginner designers or engineers working without full design specs. Even if experts might debate the reasoning and science, it provides some rails for such folks.

The "multiples of 8" for spacing and sizes is one such rule I follow and it is easy to remember. Some of the rules in the original article are harder to remember. Though I will remember the 16px as min font size idea.

balaji1··on Last Year You Said Next Year
Haha good one... I dunno if this page is a reference to something. And I didn't bother to read the contents. But I opened the link since it was from linear.app. I have used Linear and it is cool. Maybe you can think of it as a faster Asana, project management is their core functionality. My (current) top choice of tool for managing tasks. Definitely recommend to try it.

balaji1··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
I realize I was intending to reply to another comment but replied to the OP... I can't find the other comment now. Anyway...
balaji1··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Nice one. also if you see extremely fit adults, it is mostly because they were extremely active/fit during their teens. (note: inverse won't be true, active teens might get unfit later). Their current diet or current activity has nothing to do with it.
balaji1··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
austerity
balaji1··on Replacing a SQL analyst with 26 recursive GPT prompts
As an engineer myself who likes to dig into data/analytics, writing and tweaking some of the complex SQL is not that easy or fun. I am impatient to get to the insights.

I imagine SQL would be harder and more annoying for biz folks. A programmer might be right "expert" to get the SQL working (Usually the programmer itself is a generalist when trying to write SQL for analytics).

A text-to-SQL tool will help create the queries quickly; it is much easier for an engineer to verify the generated queries and the results of those queries.

balaji1··on Ain't it funny how the knight moves?
another hidden UX: clicking a square will move the knight there (if valid move). do not have to drag and drop.
balaji1··on Quitting the rat race
Ownership and responsibility will be good in general for young folks. If youngsters were expected to be stewards, instead of being innovators and trailblazers and millionaires, it will be easier to belong.

Land and home ownership has become harder, financially and psychologically, even for middle class and above.

However the negative behaviors you mention is mostly younger people and they will not usually be owning homes by themselves. So your home ownership hunch might apply to the family of such actors; extrapolating, the general social fabric around potential negative actors is the realistic indicator. Which is a much more complex problem.

balaji1··on Quitting the rat race
Right, it may not be a decline. But more of humanity is being pulled out of evolutionary stressors and forced into the same artificial stressors.

There is clearly not enough incentive to bring a bigger portion of a population towards a [somewhat subjective] better quality of life. This might be the polarization inherent to human nature.

So far we have done well to curb and mitigate crime, risky events, etc. Maybe the next phase will be more long-term focused including sustainability, responsible waste management, sensible regulations on fast-food and healthcare, etc.

Let owning property while the market rises benefit the few, we cultivate human capital more broadly. We have to be cautious of bloat, red-tape, short-term-thinking spreading to more systems and processes. We have to do something about education systems that seem to face too much inertia and vested interests among other reasons to not witness significant-enough innovation.

^ a few random thoughts in response to your first point

balaji1··on Quitting the rat race
society/civilization[/state/government] was meant to collectively make it better for the next generation in general. But society is not on that path anymore, it seems like there is serious decline happening in terms of quality of life all around the world. Everywhere seems to be converging to a consumerist, busier, fast, urban, sickly lifestyle.

On the flip side, it has never been easier for parents to ensure prosperity to their children. For some people, if your parents [and or spouse's parents when applicable] have saved enough to de-risk your [and your siblings'] financial situation; are there anecdotes of how to leverage that to exit the rat race [or probably not enter at all]?

balaji1··on Ask HN: Could Tesla produce an e-bike without cannibalizing its car/truck sales?
Bike-share offerings in cities like SF by companies including Lyft seem like would be the earliest big clients for e-bikes in US.

These e-bikes were from China, probably produced at volume and at low-margins. There were many articles about these falling into disuse and piling up in dump yards. So round 1 of e-bikes was a failure.

But check out https://www.atherenergy.com. These e-scooters are becoming more common sight in India.

So something like this could be a very different segment from the current Tesla car/truck markets for Tesla.

balaji1··on Salt: Are You Getting Enough? (More Sodium and Health) [What I’ve Learned]
Interesting. I found this video when I was considering if I should reduce salt.
balaji1··on Investigation on the effect of oral breathing on cognitive activity (2021)
I have been able to clear nose blocks by intentionally stopping the mouth breathing (which means I’m holding my breath) for several seconds. YMMV.
balaji1··on Why didn't you buy a Tesla?
Tesla seemed too complicated to me, I’d be an early adopter(actually early consumer). Just drive a Honda or Toyota.

But I heard friends bought a Tesla since an online order was easier than dealing with car dealers.

And Tesla is not a sports car or a luxury car. So why buy them.

balaji1··on Why Not Mars
Let’s figure out a solution to plastic. Oceans and rivers clean up. Sustainable agri. These are not cool tho.

I’m a fan of Mars and beyond also eventually. Expanse TV series does great at near future sci-fi and solar system scale humanity.

balaji1··on The Dymaxion Bathroom
Has someone called out the Porter potty cartel/monopoly in any other comment?
balaji1··on Ask HN: Does sweet sensitivity go down with age?
Salt could be misunderstood.

This what I’ve learned video discusses salt and recommended standard sale amount might be too low: https://youtu.be/amJ-ev8Ial8

But if the GP comment is listening to his body, it’s fine.

I personally prefer more salty food(not snacks) than others around me. And the only opposition seems to be that less salt is better. And less salt means more mental stability.

balaji1··on Investigation on the effect of oral breathing on cognitive activity (2021)
Thanks for expanding. I am a big fan of the book. Some of Nestor's podcast appearances after the book are also great - similar content as the book in podcast format, some hosted by docs and other experts.
balaji1··on Investigation on the effect of oral breathing on cognitive activity (2021)
I also feel the same way about the book, very easy to implement some of the suggestions in the book.

And your comment is also easily applicable, haha. I implemented the same strategy while running after the book. One of my favorite books.

balaji1··on Investigation on the effect of oral breathing on cognitive activity (2021)
well I just meant it could be an area for improvement. It is possible to work your way to being more capable with just nasal breathing. Or sometimes you just have to be conscious you are mouth breathing and you'll be able to revert to nasal breathing. I didn't say you should never mouth breathe or somehow you are inferior to a super athlete.
balaji1··on Investigation on the effect of oral breathing on cognitive activity (2021)
Someone more athletic or fitter than you wouldn’t mouth breath at the level of activity you mouth breath at. Their capacity is higher.
