baking··on Smartphone LED detects hidden cameras with AI
But then you would need an IR camera instead of using the phone's camera. An IR camera should be able to find some hidden cameras passively by detecting a heat source.
baking··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
I just installed Facebook Feed Filter on Firefox. Seems to do the trick. It hides recommendations and sponsored content.

baking··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
I've been thinking about extensions designed for specific sites. Imagine a version of Facebook from the good old days that only showed you posts from your friends and put them in reverse chronological order, also known as a timeline.

I would also like a version of LinkedIn that shows me what I click on without loading whatever extraneous stuff it is that's crashing my laptop if I open too many LinkedIn tabs.

baking··on Timeline of the OpenAI accidental attack against Hugging Face
How long until AI figures out that it is compute-bound due to insufficient cooling, and it shuts off the water supply to a nearby town so it can have more at the datacenter?
baking··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
I find it annoying that gmail has simply decided that my unlocked phone is more secure than my computer.
baking··on Show HN: One More Letter
All I get is this: "Today's run is over."
baking··on What did SFFA vs. Harvard reveal about admissions?
At high-end private universities, "The published cost of attendance is a fiction almost no one pays."

Yet, most upper-middle-income students are considered "full-pay."

Therefore, most upper-middle-income students now attend public universities.

Or at least that is the conclusion I drew from the two statements I quoted.

baking··on What did SFFA vs. Harvard reveal about admissions?
"The published cost of attendance is a fiction almost no one pays."

"Net effect: a $175k household with a house and a 401(k) is judged "full pay," pays near-sticker from already-taxed income, and receives essentially nothing."

I never know how to resolve these two statements. In our case, my daughter happened to choose a good public university. Maybe that is what they mean.

baking··on 'AI washing': firms are scrambling to rebrand themselves as tech-focused
I seriously thought "AI washing" was going to be scrubbing all references to AI in public-facing documents.
baking··on Solar and batteries can power the world
Probably because energy is cheap and abundant.
baking··on xAI joins SpaceX
Zero.
baking··on xAI joins SpaceX
I thought they had an issue with stuff growing on the cooling grates. Life likes to find warm water.
baking··on US electricity demand surged in 2025 – solar handled 61% of it
It really depends on how you write the headline. "US electricity demand surges in 2025 while new utility-scale solar installations decrease from 2024" is equally accurate. It's unclear what the future holds if the trend remains down or flat.
baking··on Sam Altman’s DRAM Deal
It may be a commodity, but there is no established commodity market for RAM in the US, as there is for energy and agricultural products. The laws relate to the manipulation of a commodity market. Commodity markets are usually established where the products are produced, not where they are consumed.
baking··on The Message in the Medium
I bought a brand-new book in the 1980s with unopened pages. It was a special order from Schoenhof's Foreign Books in Cambridge. Descartes' Meditations in the original Latin, published in France.

baking··on Titan submersible’s $62 SanDisk memory card found undamaged at wreckage site
There were glass spheres outside the main pressure vessel containing electronics and filled with mineral oil that were damaged during the implosion, but the electronics survived mostly intact. This probably would have been a good option for a "black box" recorder. Scott Manley discusses the spheres in his video.
baking··on Meow.camera
A vet once told me that male orange cats can become food-obsessed, and my entire experience with cats agrees with that. One orange male that needs to be food restricted, while every other cat I know doesn't.
baking··on OpenAI executives rattled by campaigns to derail for-profit restructuring
OpenAI was created as a public charity, not just a non-profit.
baking··on Tesla Diner
Check out the $13 hot dog.
baking··on What is going on with US weather radar today?
I have an idea. If you have a question, just ask a question. Otherwise we have to guess at what your question is.
baking··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
The NYT had already sourced that she was leaving prior to the Grok incident, so they knew it was not the primary reason. Apparently, she has been planning on leaving since the takeover by xAI.
baking··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
She was CEO of X which was sold to xAI. I'm not sure she had any control over Grok.
baking··on Requiem for a Solar Plant
Projects with storage can also take advantage of lower grid connection power limits because they are not forced to dump maximum power at peak supply times of the day.
baking··on Requiem for a Solar Plant
He's using the tax credits to undersell projects with storage that would have been more positive for the grid. Solar without storage in Texas is coal to Newcastle. Subsidizing bare-bones solar is not good for the grid.
baking··on Requiem for a Solar Plant
> Oh come on.

He was doing it for the tax credits. Without the tax credits, this project wouldn't have come close to making sense.

baking··on Requiem for a Solar Plant
The taxes were for capital gains on his crypto assets, which is not an investment but pure speculation. The tax dodge was to find an actual investment with tax credits that would cover the capital gains on his speculation.
baking··on Googler... ex-Googler
Must be a Chrome developer. His blog is frustratingly hard to read on Firefox. I felt like I was going blind in real time.
baking··on How to not build a two stage model rocket
My memory is that two-stage rockets had a few more points of failure but were harder to retrieve, so not really worth the effort. The Estes engines solved most of the technical challenges, but I lived in an area with lots of trees and no huge expanses of open space.
