bagels··on ‘Bloody Saturday’ at Voice of America and other U.S.-funded networks
Remind me which countries Biden threatened to annex? I'm drawing a blank on that.

Trump and Musk have done a coup and are violating the constitution and law. It doesn't matter though because Republicans in the Senate are complicit and the supreme court has granted Trump unlimited power with the immunity ruling.

Soft power benefits Americans. The foreign aid and cooperation is helpful to both sides.
bagels··on Show HN: We built a Plug-in Home Battery for the 99.7% of us without Powerwalls
You're lucky. Really varies by where you live. Santa cruz mountains get the worst of it, but other parts like where I am are pretty bad too.

You can also use Waymo in San Francisco. Do both California and Texas have the least laws protecting consumers?
bagels··on Bring Starlink on airplane in carry on, sell access?
It's not going to work through the skin of the plane. They won't service you moving at airplane speeds. Starlink sells a solution that places antennas on the exterior of the plane. How would you power it? It requires a lot of current.

I wasn't providing a counterexample.

It's been decades since I was on a plane that hasn't been within a few seats of full.

They plan to sell public lands to fund this. National parks, BLM land, etc. Terrible trade.

This is really confusing to me. The original discussion was about changing licenses, but somehow (coincidentally?) there was malicious code discovered shortly after? Are these related?
bagels··on US Space Force reveals first look at secretive X-37B space plane in orbit
I don't think that is quite right. You can hit a satellite with a suborbital projectile. The kinetic energy of the satellite is enough on its own if you hit it.
bagels··on US Space Force reveals first look at secretive X-37B space plane in orbit
Pretty far. In LEO it's hard to see much of Earth in one shot since you're still so close.

https://space.skyrocket.de/doc_sdat/x-37.htm

This source indicates an 38,000 km apogee, which is is about 1/10 the distance to the moon, and just barely beyond geostationary.

bagels··on US Space Force reveals first look at secretive X-37B space plane in orbit
How big is the payload bay on this thing? The whole craft is only 29 feet long, so it's not carrying a Hubble in to orbit.
bagels··on US Space Force reveals first look at secretive X-37B space plane in orbit
One use for highly elliptical orbits is being able to linger over some part of the earth for longer periods.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molniya_orbit

I haven't seen the orbital parameters of the X-37, so it may be in an elliptical orbit for some other reason, such as spying on or interfering with geostationary satellites or who knows what else.

Why should we not be concerned with that? People shooting eachother is bad, but also, bystanders get shot all the time in these.

The kinds of intelligence they display is really interesting.

They can't figure out obstacles very well if they can see where they want to go, but are impeded. They just pace back and forth, frustrated, instead of walking around the obstacle.

They are very social, recognize people, and can be trained in some limited ways (eg. to return to the coop with whistles, if you associate it with treats).
