badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
No rich people benefit more. They rely on the rule of law in a nation state to protect their assets and provide a supply of goods and services. And they don't pay much for it (in percentage terms definitely).
badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
Please name the country? It makes the discussion impossible when you vaguely complain about something with no links or ability for anyone to respond.
badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
The EU population pays a lot for national defence and safeguarding of 'things'.

Imagine Switzerland bordered Russia... would they spend more or less on national defence? Does that mean that the EU is subsidising the defence budget of the country with the highest average wealth?

badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
I wonder how much the super-rich pay for the protection of their assets? I don't mean the physical security around their property or the fees to whatever vault holds their art collection. I mean how much to the super-rich pay to national governments for security of the national borders, court systems, general policing, financial rules, auditing, banking systems, and all the education and infrastructure required to run that system. I wonder if measured by a percentage of wealth whether the ultra rich are actually getting subsidised by the rest of the population.

An interesting thought experiment for me is to imagine a wealth tax in the 0.1 to 0.5% range and figure out if the difference is might make to the different groups.

I'm a firm believer in incremental changes and experiments which is of course hopelessly politically naive.

I'm surprised HN hasn't added a feature where if you start a comment with "I'm surprised" it asks you to tick a box to confirm that you're really sure you're contributing to the discussion.
badcppdev··on Nokia to erase up to 14,000 employees from payroll
Probably just theregister being a bit quirky and a bit click baity.
badcppdev··on Anti-ageing molecule boosts fertility in ageing mice
The study talks about how, "declining egg quality in older mice can be reversed with a dietary supplement". Sooo... unless you have a very specific genetic condition you are not going to be able to self dose and replicate the study.

Another visitor! Stay a while; stay forever!
badcppdev··on Billing Engines Don't Solve Pricing Problems
I've got agree with your comment about the business stakeholders. The uncertainties around pricing and (at the moment) the even trickier problem of price increases can lead to inaction.

It says the Pricing Page feature is coming soon :-D

badcppdev··on Using different flours for sourdough fosters different bacteria–and flavors
Have you done any experiments on this? Using hard water vs demineralised? I have no idea if this is a thing that's spoken about in the Sourdough baking world.
badcppdev··on Visualizing American inflation across eight categories
Exactly my point. If a category becomes 3x more expensive but it only takes up 1% of my expenditure then a stacked graph without proportions is very misleading.

badcppdev··on Why the Culture Wins: An Appreciation of Iain M. Banks (2017)
I don't think anyone called the book bad. I just know that I'm quite keen not to read it again because of the horrible things in it. It might be well written but maybe I don't feel like those concepts going into my head.

It's a subjective thing. Just like which Culture novel is the best.

badcppdev··on Why the Culture Wins: An Appreciation of Iain M. Banks (2017)
Things might be horrific even if they aren't gratuitous or even described explicitly in a book.
badcppdev··on Why the Culture Wins: An Appreciation of Iain M. Banks (2017)
I'm don't remember the chair but I have a queasy feeling that I've deliberately repressed thinking about the the chair.

I agree with GP that I don't want to reread certain thing regardless of how well written they are.

badcppdev··on Why the Culture Wins: An Appreciation of Iain M. Banks (2017)
The Culture novels were published from 19872-2012 and I believe generally written the year before they were published so perhaps the foresight has to be weighted against when the books were written.
badcppdev··on Visualizing American inflation across eight categories
It's very pretty but having a stacked graph is really inappropriate.

We don't spend equal amounts on those categories and stacking the graphs obscured the relative changes. There is no analysis worth anything in the text.

It's just showcasing a pretty graph

badcppdev··on How to build a universe that doesn’t fall apart two days later (1978)
"In Acts, the disciple Philip baptizes the black man, who then goes away rejoicing. "

These days preaching has been replaced by podcasts. We listen to the new prophets and are baptised when we click on the Subscribe button, rejoicing our newly acquired view of the world

badcppdev··on Cockpit: Web-based graphical interface for servers
Piggybacking off your comment I wonder how many other people really care about the tech stack used to create any product they are running on a server. What dependencies does it have? Do I need to be conscious of vulnerabilities in some logging library or Curl?

And I also find it really interesting to see whether a product is programmed using one clear stack or a mixture.

badcppdev··on New study will examine irritable bowel syndrome as long Covid symptom
Fine. But I was very sad that the questioner didn't do some googling before they introduced a spurious question about vaccines into a comment thread about long covid.

20% of the US population remain unvaccinated. I think that 60 million people is a sufficient control sample to be able to tell the difference between long covid issues and vaccine issues.

badcppdev··on Argentina's Senate approves bill to eliminate income tax
The child doesn't have an original country. There is no record of them being born or who their parents are because there is no government. There is no communication with the outside so records can't be held externally.

To be clear I think you're describing a horrific dystopia that should be opposed by any ethical human being.

badcppdev··on Lego MRI Scanners donated to hospitals to help children cope with anxiety (2022)
I grew up not using the plural form Legos. But I also grew up thinking that it's important to never let a big company tell you how to speak.

Why is income tax theft but sales tax not? Surely selling your time for money is analogous to selling an object for money
