badcppdev··on Open and portable Postgres-as-a-service. Also available on Hetzner
They are cool features but I wonder what percentage of customers are likely to require extensions?
badcppdev··on NASA says SpaceX’s next Starship flight could test refueling tech
I think you're showing a lack of understanding of Spacex's fast development processes but as an aside the word cue (rather than queue) is used when we are referring to a sign or signal given by something or someone.
badcppdev··on Ousted propaganda scholar accuses Harvard of bowing to Meta
AI software platform for analysing company data files... acquired by the company with the most to hide
badcppdev··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
Apple and Google have 20% and 16% respectively. Considering the amazing platform boost that those two giants have I think 25% is very impressive.

But I agree that podcastings growth has been very slow. I think that there are a lot of factors influencing that. The biggest in my opinion is that listening to a podcast is more intimate than any other media (including broadcast radio) and that factor both slows uptake and decreases churn. Not a marketer though so just making that up.

badcppdev··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
Spotify made a gamble that having some headline Podcasters would build the listener market. Podcasters release regularly and have a different potential for becoming viral compared to musicians so it's a valid commercial decision to make.

Seems like their headline gambles didn't work but googling suggests that the podcast listener market increased 10% in the last year so I think they'll probably try again.

badcppdev··on Show HN: Dobb·E – towards home robots with an open-source platform
Oh bless. User smackay's comment was a reference to Harry Potter where if you hand a house-elf (like Dobby) an item of clothing they are freed from servitude.
badcppdev··on My $500M Mars rover mistake
Aside: I recognised 'quaddies' from your quote ... there was some very distinctive cover art on the Analog magazine for that story: https://www.abebooks.co.uk/Analog-Science-Fact-Fiction-Febru...
badcppdev··on The 1988 shooting down of Flight 655 as a user interface disaster
Interesting: " April 7, 1997

Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin and Vietnamese Finance Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung agreed today that Vietnam will repay the United States approximately $145 million in economic debts owed by the former Republic of Vietnam. "

badcppdev··on Spaceship that mows the lawn
You give me the impression that you didn't do more than read the titles of the sidebar articles and then jump to conclusions.

Can you confirm whether or not you've read / listened to his content?

badcppdev··on Show HN: Sonic Garbage
I saw that was cool then I realised you could scroll down. Super cool!

One bit of feedback is that as you scroll the boxes can cover each other up so maybe the UI can be tweaked to allow you to stop a sample even if it's might be coloured.

I'd like the samples I've used to show up in a history list on the right.

badcppdev··on SpaceX plans to sell shares next month at $150B valuation
Can you enlighten me about when NASA stopped doing things? I got the impression that NASA has 'always' used companies to build things for them. I'm quite cynical so I assume it's always been an tax->government->industry funding process.
badcppdev··on Show HN: New visual language for teaching kids to code
"how a machine can do that" > "nobody answered" is a really key takeaway here.

Do teachers understand coding enough to answer basic questions like that? I'm curious about whether they do.

badcppdev··on I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions
Maybe they just wanted to generate more material for the movie ?
badcppdev··on London Is Building Its Own Vegas Sphere
What's your opinion on the location of the site compared to the location of the residents of that area? Hopefully you're not calling the locals amoebas.

badcppdev··on London Is Building Its Own Vegas Sphere
I hope this Google Map link: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Braithwaite+House,+7+Forre...

works and demonstrates why all the local residents are hoping that this doesn't get approved.

TL;DR the site is has residential areas on 2.5 sides within 50-100 meters

100% and that issue was very important to the FAA. Being able to blow up a rocket if it starts to go off course is absolutely critical
badcppdev··on US business elite welcomes Xi Jinping with standing ovation
Why would the government need to be involved? It's an uninteresting self organising phenomenon where commercial entities pay attention to and show respect to bigger entities.
badcppdev··on Around The World, Part 1: Continents
That's a brilliant little game. Trading and exploration. Super simple user interface
badcppdev··on Mary Beard traces the profile of the Roman emperor
Damn it I spent a whole day not thinking about the Roman empire
badcppdev··on The Missiles on Our Land
You're absolutely correct. Thanks for your succinct reply.

Before commenting in this area I probably have to remind myself of the history of the MAD policies and the conditions that lead to that.

badcppdev··on The Missiles on Our Land
You could probably make do with submarine, ship, and airplane based nuclear weapons?
badcppdev··on Did Reddit just denylist all IPs?

badcppdev··on We used to build steel mills near cheap power. Now we build datacenters
If you think about why a vacuum flask or thermos is used to keep drinks hot (or cold) for an amount of time you'll realise that space / a vacuum is a very good insulator.

An object in space loses heat according to the Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation. That use the fourth power of the temperature differential so you get boost from the background of space being -270C. BUT the Stefan-Boltzmann constant is 5.67 × 10−8 J/s · m2 · K4 and that is the problem.

You can do the numbers yourself but various internet sources suggest that spacecraft radiators can only cool between 100 and 350 W of internally generated heat per square meter. That is a big radiator for not much cooling.

badcppdev··on Typing fast is about latency, not throughput
Do you recommend that the junior staff you supervise use autocomplete and other code generation tools? Do you use an IDE with linting, etc?
badcppdev··on milliForth
That's awesome to know. I remember reading his blog years ago when he was setting up Green Arrays
badcppdev··on milliForth
I think you're right that he's still at Green Arrays. Still a director there apparently.

I do have to note that the linked video is from 2013 so I assume they've moved on from that.

badcppdev··on Drunk grizzlies keep getting hit by trains in Montana
Maybe if the bears learn to put logs on the tracks... or they develop fire and burn the railway sleepers.

badcppdev··on Tiny device is sending updated iPhones into a never-ending DoS loop
People used to die before some life saving technologies were invented.

People can die these days if their technology fails. They might not have a better alternative because they can't afford it or it hasn't been invented

Teaching someone a lesson or educating society sounds like a line from a villain from a Bond movie. A sociopathic villain. You are making comments that a sociopath would make.

badcppdev··on milliForth
Does anyone in the Forth community know if Charles Moore is still with us?
badcppdev··on Planes, Spheres and Pseudospheres
I'd rather not. That stuff isn't my cup of tea. Why don't you just google it.
