Really! For some locations you need a street address to be sure you're collecting the correct Sales Tax for that particular type of product.

Also there are Sales Tax holidays where the rate of sales tax is reduced for a set period: https://www.salestaxinstitute.com/resources/sales-tax-holida...

Also certain customers are exempt from Sales Tax...

badcppdev··on Wavy walls use fewer bricks than a straight wall (2020)
I actually find that web page quite disappointing because there is no comparison of the relative strengths of the different wall shapes.

I think you're asking if a series of arcs is stronger than a wavy line. It's a great question and I think the answer to that would require a full model of the two walls to calculate all the stresses, etc. But I think it would also depend on the question of "stronger against what?" A pushing force but at what point and at what angle. Even height might make a difference.

My gut instinct is that the point where a wavy wall changes from curving one way to another is a slight weak point and perhaps an angle there would actually be stronger. Might be totally wrong.

badcppdev··on Crucial system of ocean currents is collapsing; ‘affects everyone on the planet’
This is a silly comment.

China's per person emissions are far lower than most industrialised countries. Qatar is at the top with almost 40 tons of CO2 per person per year.

We are not concerned with people on high salaries. They can hopefully take care of themselves. Far more important to talk about low, average and median earners for I hope obvious reasons.
badcppdev··on Why Frames Tilt Forward (2015)
Nice Heinlein reference. That particular concept stuck with me after reading SIASL

Oz super is always going to be in AUD even if the subject is living in the UK. Does your system support investments in multiple currencies? ;-)

More typical UK expense figures is a really hard one. I think we've got a crazy wide spread of incomes and expenditures the same as the US but with differences such as almost nobody earning average income will spend any of it on health care.

I came here to say the same thing. Defined benefit pensions are very rare these days in the UK.

Also I have to add that your sentences saying, "workplace pension cash-flow priority" and " corresponding income stream" are very confusing.

I think the figures for the UK example are not great. Living expenses, health care, and medical expenses are a lot larger than seems correct.

Also you should probably put a tool tip defining concessional vs non-concessional Australian superannuation. Also that should be in AUD rather than £

Amazing interface BTW

badcppdev··on Young people are flocking to astrology
I'm not going to argue with your clear reference but I will reference this article: https://askabiologist.asu.edu/questions/birds-dinosaurs-rept... which adds a bit of useful context.

"So a reptile is any animal descended from the original group called reptiles. Both birds and mammals share ancestors sometimes referred to as reptile-like animals (Reptiliomorpha), but it's not very common for people to talk about mammals as reptiles."

badcppdev··on Why Frames Tilt Forward (2015)
This sentence is very funny to me: "Most people in the Northern Hemisphere hang their pictures on a wall."

I guess OP did some research but perhaps wasn't exhaustive and didn't want to generalise to below the equator. People write funny and quirky things. I'm glad things like archive.org exist to save the quirkiness for future generations.

White horse is holding up well. Some interesting points but I'm still happy with my "Don't pay don't watch" stance.
badcppdev··on Over 50% of Young Danes Have Streamed or Downloaded Content Illegally
So in your scenario do you enable pirating digital copies for other people? After all they might have decided to pay for the content at a later stage?

And how do you feel about this conversation? Are your words influencing me to perhaps walk back from my stance of, "Don't watch if you don't pay"? Are you causing potential harm to the content creators if you convince me?

And how do you know that you wouldn't pay for the content in the future?

badcppdev··on Over 50% of Young Danes Have Streamed or Downloaded Content Illegally
Interesting point but can you describe a more appropriate version of copyright that you would prefer to replace the corrupt one? What would you change? Is watching a pirated stream still stealing from the artists?

I like your product but your pricing per endpoint is not what I would choose:

10 endpoints - $1 per endpoint per month

20 endpoints - $1.5 per endpoint per month

30 endpoints - $1.33 per endpoint per month

badcppdev··on Higher interest rates mean for the size and distribution of UK household wealth
The linked PDF has a lot more content: https://www.resolutionfoundation.org/app/uploads/2023/07/Pea...

I'm determined to understand the full context of this claim: "FIGURE 22: The typical household needs to amass far less wealth to achieve the same standard of living in a higher-rates environment, but far more if rates drop"

The extra money to the bank will go to the shareholders of that bank. Wealth will move from home owners to bank owners.

A bit of a tangent but I've been paying for Spotify for years and I love it (although I do miss the old UI) but I've got to admit I'm not happy when I read about the amount the artists get paid. $120 per year is a great bargain for me and I understand that Spotify is going to lose subscribers if they start putting the price up but really it's not fair to musicians who's entire back catalog is just sitting there available to me whenever I feel like playing it.
badcppdev··on Over 50% of Young Danes Have Streamed or Downloaded Content Illegally
You could have chosen to not watch the anime. No one forced you to pirate it.

Sometimes the only way for an individual to access some content is for them to steal that content. And that person can choose to steal or not watch the content.

How is that not a simple black and white moral choice.

You have no right to see something just because you really really want to.

badcppdev··on Over 50% of Young Danes Have Streamed or Downloaded Content Illegally
I know people debate whether it's really "stealing" but my opinion is that if you won't pay then just don't watch. I don't care if I'm downvoted for this but people do not have a right to listen to music or watch movies.

People seem to be united in their condemnation of wage theft where businesses don't pay their workers properly. And most people think restaurants should pay their waiters properly instead of relying on tips. I just think it's really analogous that if an artist makes some content then you should pay them for it.

(And don't complain to me about the corrupt film or music industry. It's a simple moral choice by the individual)

badcppdev··on Advice for finding a technical co-founder (2021)
My take on this is:

- Domain expertise = technical. Insurance underwriter, medical professional, etc etc.

- Business expertise != technical. MBA, 'entrepreneur', etc

badcppdev··on Bluesky now checks against this array of slurs when creating a username
I also have a funny anecdote: I made a comment in Hacker News saying a list of slurs was incomplete and only mentioning the initial letters of a few slur words not everyone understood me.

The point of not mentioning a full word was because for a slur to be a slur it needs to be in a shared context. Otherwise maybe it's just a shortened version of Michael or an embankment used to prevent flooding. The child in your anecdote is a perfect example of that. Thank you.

badcppdev··on Bluesky now checks against this array of slurs when creating a username
Was actually thinking Dyke, Seppo, and Mick to keep with the theme of slurs against groups of people. (Slut is obviously a slur as well but I think dick and motherfucker are just insults...
badcppdev··on Bluesky now checks against this array of slurs when creating a username
They are missing the T word, the F word, the D word, the S word, and the M word. Now obviously only some of those are racial slurs but I think keeping this in the code base rather than a database is definitely asking for issues
badcppdev··on Threads: The BBC drama which affected a generation of viewers
I read the graphic novel version of "When the Wind Blows" as a child about 40 years ago. I don't remember being scared but to this day I still think about how I would improvise a fall-out proof shelter in my own house.
badcppdev··on I Am Leaving
Can you tell me in words the value (V1) or values that you're filtering for with this life choice? And whether there are other values (Vall) that you hold and would like your friends to hold. And talk to me about the correlation between V1 and Vall.

Because my opinion is that my friends willingness (or preference) to use a non secure messaging app owned by a giant tech corp has very very very low correlation with whether I'd like them to be a friend.

Edit: To be 100% clear the badly maintained infrastructure was the responsibility of a for profit private company at the point where people died.
