backtoyoujim··on The 18th-century French media stoked a werewolf panic

Fun French flick on a fictionalized version of this panic is a film called "Le Pacte des loups" or "Brotherhood of the Wolf".

Worth watching for some of that cultural milieu.

The speed limit was about gas consumption in a supply crisis. And it should be still about energy consumption.

backtoyoujim··on Adam Curtis on the dangers of self-expression (2017)

"Capitalism is about self-expression" is a garbage statement that made me wish I hadn't read that far into the article.

backtoyoujim··on J.G. Ballard predicted the rise of social media (2016)

French director Tati's film "Mon Oncle" certainly made satire of the obsession with modernity that post WWII France was experiencing.

backtoyoujim··on FCC votes to restore net neutrality rules

Agencies are not beholden to Congress; they are beholden to the executive branch that creates them.

That is why Nixon created the EPA so that there would not be a Department of the Environment that was out of the hands of executive power.

backtoyoujim··on Defeated CEOs are now conceding hybrid working is here to stay

There is no reason to count them as defeated.

They are just properly informed.

backtoyoujim··on Joel Spolsky on Stack Overflow, Inclusion, and How He Broke IT Recruiting (2018)

If the suggestion is a return to a guilded age where masters have more interns and apprentices perhaps we should not turn to Spolsky for things other than how to stop sucking at excel.

Does apple still charge people annually to develop apps for apple ?

Because charging people to charge them again to make Apple useful seems abusive.

I am not a fan of "some else figured out that they could overcharge people" as a moral lesson.

Rich people need to let criticism of their wealth exist without complaining.

Holy books are always infallible until they fall on one's own lifestyle.

backtoyoujim··on Ask HN: What was the outcome of Reddit blackout?

The geo-local community subreddit that I left has been overwhelmed by the local sheriff who likes to post about who they are firing, why won't anyone apply to work there, why criminals have no rights, and why that department's regressive tax plans won't even be noticed by anyone with enough money that matters.

That has turned the flavor of that sub into a simulacrum of Nextdoor.

I hope that the A.E. Stallings translation of Hesoid's "Work And Days" lasts for centuries.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36355637-works-and-days

It would show the future some portion of us as English speakers knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin. And since it is in heroic couplets it will offer a window into our pronunciation, syllabic emphasis, and vocabulary.

backtoyoujim··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum

What's crazy is that onlyfans content creators get so much slack for sending out video and audio of their phenotype.

23andMe grabs a person by the source code and somehow that isn't considered obscene.

Instead of "some people" why not offer a real world example of this assertion.
