b_tterc_p··on Man and man's best friend have both been experiencing declines in sperm quality

b_tterc_p··on Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony commit to disclose drop rates for loot boxes
I’m not aware of any Nintendo titles that didn’t already do this.

This is good in theory but I don’t think it really matters. People are innumerate. I enjoy a few gacha games that are conducive to F2P players. My sense from reading random reddit threads is that most people are both very bad at understanding the in game utility of various items/characters/whatever’s and at understanding the odds of getting them in a lottery. A lot of people complain when they try 100 pulls to get a 0.5% chance, and don’t get it. They consult calculators and look at the probabilities within c pulls and don’t internalize it correct.

And then they get an opportunity to just buy things straight up and perceive $10 for something specific to be good value because it is better relative to the norm.

That’s what really messes with innumerates. Promotions offering low value that is higher than their anchored norm.

b_tterc_p··on Bernie Sanders Promises to Tell Us About Aliens If He's Elected President
I really like the idea that there’s a big organization of workers who handle our alien information store, and the only person who gets to use it is the president.
b_tterc_p··on Victims are often criminals, and that is a paradox American policing can’t solve
> In most other countries police has an active role in settling disputes using empathy and compassion, instead of just arresting people and locking them away.

This sounds false to me outside of some Western European areas but I don’t have data to support it

I’m not sure how you imagine communicating such things to a child. Do you have a flip chart with full frontal nudes in red and feet pictures in orange? It’s not like there’s anything more prohibitive than “absolutely not ok”. Both are beyond that. Your argument sounds like needing to clarify that Fentanyl is worse than heroin, and that if I don’t make it clear that fentanyl is worse, they’re going to do both?

If you can prevent either, you should prevent both.

b_tterc_p··on Twitter confesses to more adtech leaks
1) I would assume your entire social network is well documented. A lot of conversations include one person looking something up before or after the conversation. Most conversations don’t come up randomly. That can probably signal that you might be interested in such a topic too.

For 2) it’s worth noting that when you say you didn’t say Alexa, it means Alexa at least thought you did. It’s not trying to constantly record, but may still be a problem to you.

b_tterc_p··on Facebook Hit by Apple’s Crackdown on Messaging Feature
Messenger app initiated a conversation between me and a random friend so we could talk about our 5 year friendship anniversary. Couldn’t fathom who thought that would work.
b_tterc_p··on Death Note: L, Anonymity and Eluding Entropy (2017)
Steins Gate is probably the closest answer to this (in which the time travel mechanism can only send back information) and is my favorite time travel mechanics system. Timelines diverge into their infinite possibilities but in self consistent ways. That is, some timelines can only exist as a result of information received from other timeline’s future; meaning the past is dependent on the future of a different timeline which won’t play out, but has added a sort of immutable constant to the first timeline.

b_tterc_p··on U.S. Designates China as Currency Manipulator
Hmm

At first that sounds like a weird theory to me, but on second thought it’s quite reasonable. China has some long term goals, for which a more divided and more poorly controlled US would benefit them. But Trump is a strong immediate threat to their economy so it’s probably better to have him removed for China.

However the more ammo Trump has to vilify China, the more virtuous he appears. If this were really china’s aim, they should be playing the victim. So I think the us presidential race is not their top concern.

b_tterc_p··on His mission: Meet 10k people, one at a time, for an hour at a time
I meant to imply the consumers of his stuff were most likely virtue signaling. Not he himself.

Your phrasing implies that dismissing someone without engaging someone is a bad thing. On the contrary it’s recognizing that most people’s opinions are based on nothing but their sense of community identity and aren’t worth engaging at all.

b_tterc_p··on Dow plunges more than 950 points after China devalues its currency
Say you (as the US) wanted to keep the same level of trade between the US and China- and the tariffs rose and the yuan fell in such a ratio that this remains true.

The net outcome is good right? The US gets slightly more tax (larger % of a smaller number), Chinese economy has to deal with loss of currency value?

b_tterc_p··on China lets yuan break 7-per-dollar level for first time in over a decade
If I ask you to hold my drink, you’re not allowed to drink it. Banks have rights to do certain things with your deposits, but it’s not theirs. They can’t decide to pay salaries and deduct the amount from the deposits.

Custody isn’t title.

b_tterc_p··on His mission: Meet 10k people, one at a time, for an hour at a time
I think this guy is making content that is easy to praise but in reality not very interesting- and has (hidden?) sponsor ads to boot. I think it’s pretty gross to read something to learn of a strangers life and be told to buy WeWork services as a casual FYI.

But I don’t care what he does. It was just a comment. You’ve made several that imply I care a lot, which makes me seem unreasonable. If that was unintentional, please don’t do that. If that was intentional then go suck a different lemon, because I’m really not that bitter about this.

b_tterc_p··on His mission: Meet 10k people, one at a time, for an hour at a time
This is the kind of thing that one may get shamed for calling garbage, but it seems like he is just trying to make a clone of Humans of New York and make money by hiding ads in what’s supposed to be heartwarming human stories.

Yes, this post and his brand is full of “humble” values and what not. He may be genuine, but I don’t think it’s praiseworthy. It feels like a tool for virtue signaling.

b_tterc_p··on China lets yuan break 7-per-dollar level for first time in over a decade
I’m not familiar with any savings accounts that dont permit you to take money out whenever. You might mean CDs, which will, as per the agreement, assess a fee against you if you take it out early. But you still have title to the cash whenever you want. It’s yours. And if a fee happens, the fee is still money that is now owned by the bank instead.

Down the line you suggested depositing money creates money because now you and the bank have a dollar. That’s not true, because the bank doesn’t have title to the dollar.

b_tterc_p··on China lets yuan break 7-per-dollar level for first time in over a decade
People with savings

Those with a lot of money invested in the domestic market can do ok if the rise in imports offsets it.

b_tterc_p··on China lets yuan break 7-per-dollar level for first time in over a decade
No, because you don’t have the right to use $1 at any time.

In a bank, Person A gives the bank a dollar, the bank loans out (let’s say the full dollar for simplicity) and, some steps later, the dollar is out back into the bank (let’s say person B does this for simplicity).

Both A and B have title to a dollar, so yes, there’s more than one.

The bank created it by creating a liability for themselves. This is ok because long term the loaning of the dollar should create more than a dollar in value, so the liability will be covered.

b_tterc_p··on Bad Times in Tech? Not If You’re a Startup Serving Other Startups
Brex sounds like it’s headed for bankruptcy based on the article. They’re unprofitable now, and have incredibly risky clients sitting in front of what feels like a looming recession.
b_tterc_p··on Kept alive with tubes for nearly 17 years
it seems illogical to spend a lifetime making decisions on incomplete information and then foregoing the last one.

I mean I get that people make their own choices. I just am confused that more people aren’t interested in having a death of their choosing. Or even consider it. Like, I have a song that I would like to hear as I’m dying. I want to think and reflect on things and feel safe in spite of the incoming end. I am convinced that with a better cultural mindset we could make death a happy, celebrated, communal event that people look forward to in a bittersweet way. The way most people die to me sound sad for all involved, including the dying.

b_tterc_p··on FBI says “extremists” motivated by Pizzagate, QAnon are threats
You seem to be asserting that believing a conspiracy theory does not make you mentally ill. That’s true, but not what I’m saying. I’m saying conspiracy theorists are overwhelming just mentally ill to begin with. There was a great piece a while ago about a journalist who interviewed people at flat earther conventions. They pretty much all cited significant emotional trauma or betrayal of trust.
b_tterc_p··on FBI says “extremists” motivated by Pizzagate, QAnon are threats
Most conspiracy theorists are just mentally ill. Take flat earthers. Most of them suffer from extreme distrust and paranoia and tend to believe only foremost anyone who tells them they’re being lied to.

Saying that mentally ill people who believe in evil government conspiracies could be dangerous isn’t that unreasonable. Maybe specific individuals in the movement are passive, but what about those that they ignite?

> I'm a bit torn because I'm firm realist and I believe no matter how bad life is, it is the only thing that has a value for you because it's the only thing you have.

I find this to not be self consistent. you would trade two boring work days for one awesome day right? Two bad weeks for a happy one? There has to be some long tail of uncomfortable days that you would rather enjoy on a shorter time frame, even if the long tail is unknown length. Might a warm send off not be preferable to difficult times ahead?

Sorry for your situation.

The comparison to solitary is an interesting one I hadn’t considered.
b_tterc_p··on Japanese Play-by-Postcard RPGs: Net Games (2017)
I used to run games like this on forums. Groups of about 30 players doing actions over email 1-3 times a week, mostly in split up subgroups with forum wide responses that explained the complete state of the game whenever they found a means of communicating for a while.

It wasn’t as difficult to manage as I think many assumed, although mandating that the game must go on even if people missed something was tough sometimes.
