b0b0b0b··on Google to embrace MCP
Http 402: “my time to shine”
b0b0b0b··on Native speakers are hard to understand in a lingua franca situation
Was the word “inflammable”?
b0b0b0b··on A millisecond isn't fast (and how we made it 100x faster)
From the article, she says they tried "1.0 / (1 << mj)", which turned out to be slower than the lookup table. May or may not be equivalent to java.lang.Math.scalb, I dunno.
b0b0b0b··on “I have [bash] history back to ~2003”
I've found this tool to be super-helpful: https://github.com/dvorka/hstr

It's like ctrl-r, but it shows you many candidates at once.

b0b0b0b··on The Four Month Bug: JVM statistics cause garbage collection pauses
Would -XX:-UsePerfData also work?

I noticed jankiness in my eclipse and adding that flag seemed to help.

b0b0b0b··on High-reproducibility and high-accuracy method for automated topic classification
I'm confused by the discussion of multi-lingual corpora. Is it common in topic modeling to consider documents drawn from disjoint vocabularies, or is it just a kind of thought experiment?
b0b0b0b··on You Can See the Milky Way
Dear lazyhackernews,

What would the night sky look like with the milky way subtracted out?

Thanks in advance!

b0b0b0b··on New Microscope Collects Dynamic Images of the Molecules that Animate Life

b0b0b0b··on Relativistic hash tables
I'd be interested in learning more about this.
b0b0b0b··on I found a bug in the .NET framework and fixed it by hand-altering the DLL
Why wasn't the DLL signed? Is this not a thing?
b0b0b0b··on How I increased conversion on my checkout form
Did the strength of the ssl decryption change? Do some browsers not support 256 bit ssl encryption?
b0b0b0b··on Introducing the WebKit FTL JIT
For me, chrome still beats this webkit and the latest firefox for deep learning mnist in the browser:

b0b0b0b··on Color for the Colorblind
Could the same effect be achieved in software for computer displays?
b0b0b0b··on Google Reader announced its shutdown exactly a year ago
I really wanted prismatic to be the replacement for google reader, but after a year with it I still feel like I have lots of unmet needs.
b0b0b0b··on Papers, Please: The 'boring' game that became a smash hit
The article doesn't offer much on how it became a hit.

I learned about Papers Please from nerdcubed on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sV-6YSye2Vo

I bet he hasn't spent anything on, say, a google ad campaign.

b0b0b0b··on The awful experience of firing someone I hired for the first time
This isn't always possible or desirable: "you should always try to hire someone better than you".

Building an organization is really challenging; I don't know how to draw a line between investing more in someone versus cutting them loose.

b0b0b0b··on Salesforce CEO Benioff on How to Fix San Francisco
Salesforce runs buses too.
b0b0b0b··on Improving Dropbox Performance: Retrieving Thumbnails
Were you already serving thumbnails over https? Or were they served over http?

edit: I was also wondering whether you can skip downloading some thumbnails based on the velocity of the scroll.

b0b0b0b··on USA ISP Speed Index
Why does anyone lend credence to speedtest.net scores, particularly in the context of a net neutrality discussion?
b0b0b0b··on Project Euler
I love project euler, but I've come to the realization that its purpose is to beat programmers soundly about the head and neck with a big math stick. At work last week, we were working on project euler at lunch, and had the one CS PhD in our midst not jumped up and explained the chinese remainder theorem to us, we wouldn't have had a chance.
b0b0b0b··on When Growth Hacking Goes Bad
cotap could not be more annoying.
b0b0b0b··on Amazon bares its computers
James Hamilton's blog is not to be missed:

b0b0b0b··on Presto: Interacting with petabytes of data at Facebook
What are the access paths that presto uses (full scan, range scan, skip scan, ...)? Does it understand indexes?
b0b0b0b··on Users complain their Dell 6430u laptops smell like cat piss
I know there's a family of compounds found in wine that can smell like cat urine[1]. If this laptop has a rubberized component, some googling[2] indicates these same compounds may be employed in their manufacture.

b0b0b0b··on The Prison Guard With a Gift for Cracking Gang Codes
Reminds me of http://math.uchicago.edu/~shmuel/Network-course-readings/MCM... using MCMC to break a prisoner substitution cipher.
b0b0b0b··on Facebook CSRF leading to full account takeover (fixed)
Are there researchers out there testing whether facebook regresses security fixes?

Or would the effort not procure enough reward?

b0b0b0b··on PredictionIO – A machine learning server
a collaborative filtering server.

It strikes me as a lot of overengineering with no real meat at the core.

b0b0b0b··on Making full table scan 10x faster in InnoDB
I would guess that InnoDB is trying to preserve some behavior of MySQL where full table scans are expected to proceed by primary key order.

The solution sounds fragile; I guess you can't query by extent?

b0b0b0b··on Deep Learning: Facebook Wants To Know Even More About Its Users
I'm curious what kind of data they want to analyze with deep learning.
b0b0b0b··on The Steely, Headless King of Texas Hold ’Em
Assuming the machine is stateless, why can't the space of hole cards be mapped out and and strategies/responses enumerated?

But ultimately, the whole enterprise just seems distasteful: "Look, there was a 24-year-old who had beaten it for a while. Now he’s broke. And I think this machine had something to do with his demise."
