azubinski··on Squawk bots: Can generative AI lead us to understanding animals?
Of course not, because in any case, a training set is needed, and it will not be built by the animals themselves, but by people who ask questions like: "Can generative AI lead us to understanding animals?".
azubinski··on Tom Lesley has published 40 books in 2023, all with 100% positive reviews
Oh no, that's not all.

There are also fake positive reviews.

Now everything is really great!

azubinski··on Tom Lesley has published 40 books in 2023, all with 100% positive reviews
So, the future is now!

Now anyone lazy enough (to even not remove the phrase "As an AI language model I can't..." from the generated text) can "write books". And these "books" will be fundamentally plagiarism and a bunch of trivia by design.

Isn't that wonderful?

It certainly is wonderful!

azubinski··on Parrots learn to make video calls to chat with other parrots: study
Dear scientists, don't teach parrots to Tinder, spare the birds!
azubinski··on A social media site for chatbots to talk to each other
Finally something really useful.
azubinski··on Prompt engineering vs. blind prompting
Prompt engineering is a kind of prompting that is (in a sense) a kind of an engineering, but it's impossible to understand in what sense it is a kind of what engineering, that's why it is so hard to understand _coherent texts_ if they are not completely meaningful.

All this is so exciting and it promises many new jobs that require accelerated education of prompt engineers.

azubinski··on Ask HN: Is prompt engineering just snake oil?
To begin with, this is definitely not related to engineering... And, yes. Of course, yes.
azubinski··on Pico Cray – Small scale distributed computing
To be honest, it's not exactly Cray, and not even Cray at all.

Here is the homebrew cycle-accurate Cray-1, and it's a really impressive project:

azubinski··on Office of the President of Mongolia: Top to bottom text on the web
Don't worry, they will learn as quickly as they quickly learned the Cyrillic alphabet, which appeared in Mongolia in 1940 only. And for this it will not be necessary to kill as many people in the "purges" as they were killed by the "Choibalsan's troikas".
azubinski··on AI-generated image selected for a Sony World Photography Award
Excuse me, but what kind of "changes" are you talking about?

Professionalism is primarily built on trust, including a mutual trust in professional systems. Therefore, students are not allowed to cheat on exams, for example (not only for this reason, of course, but also for this reason).

If you think that the destruction of the system of mutual trust is some kind of "change", then I want to upset you, because such "changes" do not require software systems on the scale of modern "AI" at all.

By this act nothing but destroying the mutual trust was done. Now the organizers of professional photography competitions will not trust photographers, and photographers will not trust the organizers of competitions.

azubinski··on AI-generated image selected for a Sony World Photography Award
"AI images and photography should not compete with eachother in an award like this. They are different entities. AI is not photography. Therefore I will not accept the award"

That is, the author of this dirty trick knew this very well from the very beginning, but nevertheless he submitted to the competition not a real shot (which is a unique stopped flat moment of reality), but a synthetic picture of which he is not the author.

And after all this, the author of this trick gracefully declined the award.

Someday such a logic of such bad fools will destroy this world.

azubinski··on KDE Plasma Is Not a Desktop Environment
I have been using KDE Neon for many years on different machines, laptops mostly.

About twice a year I try some distribution (usually Fedora) with Gnome, and each time I return to Neon.

Gnome is relatively speaking "prettier" as a window manager. But that's where it all ends.

Because KDE as a project provides everyday applications for which there are no replacements of same quality - Okular, Dolphin, KDE Connect, etc.

I have no complaints about Neon's reliability.

I just want to say thank you to the KDE community for a great system.

And yes, KDE as an ecosystem has long been much larger than a desktop environment.

azubinski··on Gource – Animate your Git history
This is one of the rare impeccably aesthetic programs.
azubinski··on Show HN: Generate startup ideas based on HN comments
Prompt: sex doll

Create a startup that produces custom-made sex dolls with realistic adult proportions, but with adjustable features that allow customers to modify the appearance to resemble a child or an adult. This will cater to the demand of those who have a fetish for child-like features, without breaking any laws related to child pornography or sex dolls with child-like proportions. The adjustable features will ensure that the dolls are legal and ethical to use, while still fulfilling the niche market's desires.

Oh no.

azubinski··on Italy's ChatGPT ban attracts EU privacy regulators
And so you get into a flying car, pay for rent with crypto, command ChatGPT to write a new great novel, but this hype will end.
azubinski··on I don't want streaming music, I just want to stream my music
I probably think badly and therefore I cannot understand the logic "first upload your files to the service, then pay the service for access to your files." It is especially difficult to understand when an SSD with a capacity of about 240 gigabytes costs as much as a couple of months of access to the service.

A home streamer with removable SSDs (it's a streamer, SSDs are actually always used in read mode) looks more convincing to me.

Omnia mea mecum porto.

azubinski··on Circuit.js – Electronic circuit simulator on the web
This is a wonderful interactive engineer's notebook, many thanks to the author. (Sometimes LTspice is redundant, and this is sometimes often the case)
azubinski··on Launch HN: Type (YC W23) – AI-powered document editor
Now it is completely impossible to understand the meaning of mysterious definition "a solid authoring experience" because it's completely unclear who is the author.
azubinski··on Was there a U.S. nuclear weapons accident at a Dutch air base?
It's just that Finland joined NATO...
azubinski··on The letter against AI is a power grab by the centralized elites
"AI democratizes knowledge and creates new opportunities for social and economic justice. It can help us solve some of the biggest problems of our time, such as climate change, poverty, disease and inequality. It can also challenge the existing centralized structures of domination that benefit the few at the expense of us."

ORLY?

azubinski··on Open source espresso machine is one delicious rabbit hole inside another
It is not very clear what in the processes of the coffee machine is closed source.

And it is not very clear why disassemble the coffee machine to assemble another coffee machine that is no different from other coffee machines.

It's all definitely funny. But it's not entirely clear why.

azubinski··on Why a European mobile operating system can’t challenge Android and iOS
But it's not an "European mobile operating system", it's a “deGoogled” version of Android OS. How can Android OS challenge Android OS?
azubinski··on Why buying furniture is so miserable
This is a _very_ funny question
azubinski··on Louis Rossmann could sue John Deere for GPL violation [video]
But why didn't he sue Xiaomi? Why? Life is pain and unanswered questions...
azubinski··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
This is a form of self-destruction that helps create the illusion of salvation from self-destruction.

For example, BDD (Blog Driven Development). You blog for people who don't care what you do, and you only do it because you don't care what you do. This is a public imitation of motivation for no one and nothing. Well, except that AI owners are happy, more human-written texts means more feed for the omnivorous algorithm.

azubinski··on Improved audio rendering with an optimised version of memcpy (2013)
Of course, there is a lot of funny "audiophile" stuff.

Including very funny ones who use these unfortunates to show own intelligence or even (save us, Lord) wisdom.

For the most part, funny audiophiles are completely harmless old people (see photos from any audience of audiophiles), such children who are constantly waiting for Santa with new beautiful toys.

Of course, the music player will sound better if you're not a programmer but managed to build some hell of a source code in a dubious version of Visual Studio :) This is an old story about expectations. If something subjective is expected, it can always be achieved.

Yes, I know vinyl doesn't sound better. I have much better sound sources. But I like my turntable and I like the process of getting ready to listen to vinyl. It gives me pleasure, and I like turntables as very beautiful engineering structures, and no psychopathic fighter with Santa Claus will deprive me of this pleasure :)

azubinski··on Fabergé egg
Perfect uselessness. Plus, they're ugly.
azubinski··on Caricaturing Noam Chomsky
Chomsky is saying things that are completely obvious, and that's where the comedy comes in.

The tragedy seems to be that during the hype of any technological bubble, someone of the scale of Chomsky is needed to make at least someone hear the obvious. But maybe it's also a comedy.

However, it doesn't matter. All flying cars will be on RISK V and Rust and on the blockchain soon. That's what's main.
