azlev··on Google Declaring War on the Web
Current executives think it's a problem for the future executives.
azlev··on The car is not the future: On the myth of motorized freedom
I still think the future is working from home.
azlev··on Brazil central bank to launch Pix installment feature in September
Bear in mind that Brazil is a poor country. Cashback and worldwide acceptance is not what 90% brasillians need.

You are right about convenience, but here, 1% fee makes a huge difference to make both ends meet.

You can give alms with pix, to show how widespread pix is.

azlev··on AMD CEO sees chips from TSMC's US plant costing 5%-20% more
COVID was a 2 year period in a century. It's way cheaper to assume this risk than pay a premium all the time.

The main issue here is political.

azlev··on The bewildering phenomenon of declining quality
I bought the same Ray-Ban sunglasses model 15 years ago and 2 years ago. The older one is way better.

Cellphone is the opposite: the new one is way better.

So all in all, it's just capitalism: if quality sells more, people buy quality (whatever quality means). If cheaper sells more, companies cut costs.

I think the answer change from time to time.

azlev··on What do wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about? (2015)
With billions, can I be Batman?
azlev··on Brazil's government-run payments system has become dominant
As a São Paulo citizen, I really don't recommend cash due robbery. Privacy may be a 1st world problem, but here, assault is a real concern.
azlev··on Doubts remain over reliability of Texas power grid
First a link about Texas building renewables and batteries to it's system.

Now this point and there is a third link about power shortages in USA.

Just wondering if it would be good to group all links about a topic. I know that there is no such feature here.

azlev··on Good Retry, Bad Retry
Good reading.

In my last job, the service mesh was responsible to do retries. It was a startup and the system was changing every day.

After a while, we suspect that some services were not reliable enough and retries were hiding this fact. Turning off retries exposed that in fact, quality went down.

In the end, we put retries in just some services.

I never tested neither retry budget nor deadline propagation. I will suggest this in the future.

azlev··on Retiring from the idea of retirement
Do companies want older people? In my experience, not so much, so even if you want it's not one side choice.
azlev··on Why bother with argv[0]?
I don't think the argv was made with security in mind.

If we want something to be used in security field, the design since day 0 should consider it. Trying to retrofit something will break a lot of things.

azlev··on Is my vision that bad? No, it's just a bug in Apple's Calculator
TIL. Thank you.
azlev··on A Swiss town banned billboards. Zurich, Bern may soon follow
Improve quality of life by removing cognitive load from people.

There is legislation to grant permission to place some ads in exchange of, say public toilets to use your example.

But removed billboards from buildings or external area weren't taxed or had any positive result to society.

azlev··on You'll regret using natural keys
I think somewhat different than the article in some ways.

The first example is why `UPDATE CASCADE` was implemented. So it's possible to use natural keys as identity without the fear of children table. At least in most databases it works.

The drawback of enumeration is real, so if you expose this key you'll need some authentication/ authorization mecanism.

Another good thing in natural keys is that you can eliminate part of the joins. You don't have to join the father table because the key in child table is known.

I think the biggest challenge is how to map logins to people. It's very common to interpret both as the same, but they are not.

azlev··on Pre-Work for Setting OKRs
Well, I'm sorry for your experience. Now in a manager chair I have both experiences, setting bad OKRs and good OKRs. The performance and communication improvements when you get it right are astonishing. Unfortunately, I'm not consistent yet.

But when you find a manager/ place where people get it right, you'll love it.

azlev··on Iran said to begin attack on Israel, launching drones
Very unlikely that Iran uses GPS.
azlev··on Home insurers are dropping customers based on aerial images
Thank you.
azlev··on Home insurers are dropping customers based on aerial images
Can someone explain to my house insurance is so important? I live outside USA and I never bought an insurance, a common situation in my country.
azlev··on Building a Scalable Accounting Ledger
Ah, thank you. I understood that it was a Clickhouae schema, it's not.
azlev··on Building a Scalable Accounting Ledger
I didn't get the date as text and the amount as real in table transactions.
azlev··on My notes on Gitlab's Postgres schema design (2022)
It's reasonable to not have auto increment id's, but it's not clear to me if there is benefits to have 2 IDs, one internal and one external. This increases the number of columns / indexes, makes you always do a lookup first, and I can't see a security scenario where I would change the internal key without changing the external key. Am I missing something?
azlev··on The myth of big salaries (it's all marketing)
Since it's a 2009 article and there is taxpayers in the text, I think he was upset because the great recession bayouts and even with all world crumbling at the moment, large bonuses to C-Level.

Now it's 2024 and I expect lower profits in the middle term to companies that pays anyone more than they give in return.

azlev··on GM to Shut Down Ultra Cruise
Interesting article, thanks.
azlev··on Pg_rman: Backup/Restore Tool for PostgreSQL
It's an engine vs. a car comparison: while pg_basebackup is useful as a stand alone binary, a database deployment need multiple backups. To manage multiple backups you need a catalog. You also may want optimize the backup process, so instead of multiple pg_basebackup, you want some logic to copy only changed files.

Also, when restoring, it's important choose a restore point, and a tool to help on that is valuable.

This is the first time that I heard of this tool, I need to check all features. I know both barman and pgbackrest, so if someone wants to compare with other tools, those 2 worth a look.

azlev··on Self-hosting a high-availability Postgres cluster on Kubernetes
Yes. Orchestration is not easy.
azlev··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
Here in Brazil I have at least 4 different IDs :-).
azlev··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
Maybe I'm mistaken but China's super apps solve this problem with profit motivation.
azlev··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
It would be or a chaos or very limiting expect that companies would interact with a lot of govs to get authentication. It's way cheaper leave as is.
