azlev··on Is Software Getting Worse?
Slack is an expensive software. I expect performance and yet, I can't find messages, I have a hard time to use slack and run IDEs at the same time, they change the interface and I lost 2-3 days until adapt.

If I could save some bucks removing videos, emojis, voice and video streaming, I would not hesitate in do so.

You got a fair point on how things work: it's all about communication. You want to stay where everybody is, so the incentive is to capture market, not make a fast software.

I think that most of the innovation effort in the last decade was on how to delivery fast.

azlev··on PostgreSQL 16 Bi-Directional Logical Replication
I wouldn't word that way. Delete records is how SQL works. Also it's wiser to move old information to a separate database instead of paying maintenance costs of old or dead records. There are a lot of gotchas in keep old data, like GDPR.
azlev··on The weirdest bug I've seen yet
Hash collision?
azlev··on Who profits most from America's baffling health-care system?
Not sure if USA needs lower regulation. Many (most) successful healthcare systems are in high regulated countries.

Less regulation can solve competition problems. Is this the USA problem? I don't know.

azlev··on AWS IPv4 Estate Now Worth $4.5B
I don't like this solution because it will cost me money and time to setup myself a modem that can handle properly ipv6 or switch to a more expensive provider.

Send the bill to end users is not what should be done.

All this ipv6 endeavour already cost me a lot of time learning and troubleshooting software, and sometimes realizing that some modems doesn't have a good ipv6 stack and the best solution is to turn it off.

azlev··on An Internet of PHP
I worked 10+ years in a web hosting company. PHP was chosen not because it was easy, it's because most people just use a CMS or something in PHP.

Keep a shared host secure, PHP or something else was not an easy task, most people installed unsecure versions or misconfigure something.

Also it was a pain to support PHP versions after EOL (yes, money), and multiple versions .

azlev··on When deployments are easy, code becomes simpler
At work we use Django migrations. It helps. But the core of schema evolution is backward compatibility. To reach this goal, code review is necessary.

Here we never drop columns, only add new colunms, also never change column types.

When it comes to constraints (not null or something else) we double check about backwards compatibility.

Changing data is not a robust rollback.

azlev··on When the Government Tried to Flood the Grand Canyon
Not every hydroelectric project is zero carbon. Big lakes inside amazon forests (as an example, I'm brazilian) cause a huge carbon footprint due devastation, rotten submerse wood, and also bring uncertains.

Also, those damns were designed to extract water from a fragile environment.

Those huge projects bring a lot of uncertain too.

azlev··on CNET is deleting old articles to try to improve its Google Search ranking
Deleting old articles ease the burden to manage it.

There are infrastructure costs and manage costs.

azlev··on ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ Prepared for 100k Concurrent Players, They’ve Gotten 700K
I still remember the fireball in the trailer and I'm counting days to play the original one.
azlev··on IPv6 Deployment Status
Not sure if you agree, but I think ipv6 is fine, the transition is a disaster.
azlev··on How to be a consultant, a freelancer, or an independent contractor (2009)
> that this skill is marketable

That's the hardest part to me. How do I know that? Looking at others consultants?

azlev··on What's wrong with enterprise Linux
It's an huge company with mixed incentives. Not everyone is align whatever their alignment is.
azlev··on What's wrong with enterprise Linux
What's not clear to me is that newer software is safer or just less tested.

Although it's possible that newer versions are more secure, I couldn't find evidence of it yet. (Links are welcome).

azlev··on New study reveals most classic video games are unavailable
What's the definition of a classic video game?
azlev··on Is ORM still an anti-pattern?
I remember the world before ORM (all queries inside data access objects) and it was not a great time to programming.

While I understand that ORMs have problems, I don't want to craft all SQL by hand and make myself a SQL builder because I need some optional filters.

azlev··on Linux Namespaces Are a Poor Man's Plan 9 Namespaces
I think the simple / complex design discussion is the classic tradeoff discussion without a right answer.

azlev··on Read this post ‘unless’ you’re not a Ruby developer
Some people like, some people hate, that's why we have multiple languages to choose.
azlev··on Discussion: structured, leveled logging
Telemetry and logs are distinct. It makes sense to gather metrics and it makes sense to catch sporadic messages of what's going on in details.
azlev··on Vietnam to make Apple Watch and MacBook
Same manufacturers in different country. I can't see a big change here.
azlev··on Google’s Nest will provide data to police without a warrant
You can have all of this without giving up data.
azlev··on Google’s Nest will provide data to police without a warrant
You are not giving up privacy to a prosperous society, you are just giving up privacy.

I couldn't find evidence that mass surveillance is good a society.

We do lack trustful information.

azlev··on Desynchronization of nickel production and consumption
And what happens when the biggest nickel producer in the world needs to buy nickel from someone (non-existent) else? That's not about short squeeze, that's about the market almost ceasing to exist because market is far from perfect. The point here is: if they don't rollback, there is no money for the winner.

It's an interesting reading and I think you should read.

azlev··on What developers find surprising about Postgres transactions
Hello!

Interesting explanation.

I just want to note that both Oracle and SQL Server use READ COMMITTED as default too, so most people get the same isolation level.

Anyway this is something that surprises most of juniors devs.

azlev··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
Well, those kind of revelations are kind of frequent :-). I think the gov just should rule out lead and let top players decide what to do.

But there was an economic incentive to use TEL, so the free market prioritized profits.
