azhenley··on Git as a Storage
I've seen programs that serialize the undo manager, but is there an advantage to using git instead? I suppose it does most of the work for you, but you'll still need to manage actions that can be undone but don't directly modify a file (these are entirely app dependent, but could be something like changing which tab document is selected).
azhenley··on Ask HN: Is Hacker News slow today (2021-10-04)?
Yes. Clicking "new" or submitting a story is giving me an error too.
azhenley··on ROT8000
Is there any benefit to make it so that the function must be applied X times to restore the original text? E.g., ROT2000.
azhenley··on If I could bring one thing back to the internet it would be blogs (2020)
I find blogs by periodically asking my friends for suggestions. I recently made my list of favorites:

azhenley··on Ask HN: What are your opinions on modern BASIC dialects?
BASIC is how I got started, and I'm always tinkering with making BASIC compilers (https://web.eecs.utk.edu/~azh/blog/teenytinycompiler1.html). I'm open to trying a "modern" dialect, and I think novices could benefit from it as well.

Are there any big efforts towards a modern BASIC?

azhenley··on Goodhart's Law
I wrote a blog post a few months ago about Goodhart's Law in my life, titled "Gamification, life, and the pursuit of a gold badge".

https://web.eecs.utk.edu/~azh/blog/gamification.html

The Tyranny of Metrics is a good book that covers real-world cases of metrics gone wrong.

azhenley··on We Hire Old People
My thought is that it might be illegal to do consulting without your employer's approval in some places (like the US).
azhenley··on Speeding up atan2f
This is pretty similar to my quest to make my own cos() when my friend didn't have access to libc. It was fun! Though I don't have the math or low-level knowledge that this author does.

azhenley··on Bitten by the 90 day exercise window
Employee stock purchase plans are different than stock options.
azhenley··on Technical blogging in the era of Stack Overflow
If you're looking for more technical blogs to follow, I just made a list of my favorites a few days ago:

Technical blogs worth reading https://web.eecs.utk.edu/~azh/blog/favblogs.html

azhenley··on What makes agile software development agile?
The abstract is a good summary and isn't paywalled.
azhenley··on Lang Jam: create a programming language in a weekend
Reminds me of the PLTGames from years ago. It didn't last that long.

azhenley··on Compilers as Teachers
There is a really interesting paper, Do Developers Read Compiler Error Messages?

azhenley··on Ask HN: What SaaS should I build now 5 years ago?
Should probably prepend "Ask HN: " to the title for a bit more exposure.
azhenley··on Red: A programming language inspired by REBOL
First line of the readme: Red is a *new* programming language strongly inspired by Rebol.

There are over 13,000 commits in nearly 10 years and it has been discussed dozens of times on HN. I understand it isn't old, but is this actually new?

azhenley··on Red: A programming language inspired by REBOL
This language has been discussed a lot here over the years. A few big ones:

azhenley··on The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two
The original paper is from the 1950s and this has been studied a lot since then.

From doing a lit review on working memory capacity, it seems that our capacity is highly dependent on the context of the task/information and the individual's expertise/skills. One particular replication study I remember was not able to replicate the results. I tried applying it to more complex tasks (e.g., coding) and it did not work at all.

I recommend Radvansky's book "Human Memory" if you want to learn more.

azhenley··on Valve Steam Deck
Reminds me of a modern take on the Sega Game Gear!
azhenley··on Why Build Toys
Exactly. I have a lot of the same feelings, so 6 weeks ago I wrote a similar blog post, "Why I prefer making making useless stuff". I haven't quite figured out how to convert my "useless stuff" into a company yet though...

azhenley··on Show HN: I created 500 dev questions and launched a quiz platform
This is a good idea! I've wanted to do something similar since I've made over 2000 test questions for my CS courses over the years. I think it could be great course/interview prep.
azhenley··on Write a time-series database engine from scratch
Database Design for Mere Mortals
azhenley··on Ask HN: What are/were the main bottlenecks preventing you starting a company?
Risk aversion given that I have a good job that I worked for 10 years to get.
azhenley··on Why You Should Not Get a History PhD
I didn't say that there aren't jobs that require a PhD (even ones with a lot of openings and great pay). I said "you probably shouldn't get a PhD."
azhenley··on Why You Should Not Get a History PhD
Regardless of field, you probably shouldn't get a PhD. (Disclaimer: I'm a professor.)
azhenley··on Stabel: A pure, concatenative and statically typed programming language
Or Kitten for that matter.

azhenley··on Ask HN: Would it be educational to map error messages to common mistakes?
There’s been several dissertations on this topic and a lot of research tools. Compiler errors are [slowly] getting better.

azhenley··on Ask HN: Anybody Started a Research Institute?
In the US, it is hard to recruit postdocs unless you are at a top 10 school (I tried several times). Potential postdocs are largely incentivized by: (1) name recognition of their mentor since their letter and networking will get them their next job and (2) the likelihood of getting top-tier publications. Also, they get a decent salary and health insurance in engineering fields.

A brand new research institute does none of these things for them. I don't see why a fresh PhD would choose this over either FAANG or a university.

azhenley··on Replit now supports every programming language in Nix
Can't wait to finally try out COBOL!
azhenley··on Why I prefer making useless stuff
Unnamed and unreleased :) I occasionally work on it when I can’t sleep. I hope to release it one day...
