azeemba··on Universal Acceptance Issues with .TUBE, ASCII and IDN Domains
I sympathize with the author, they have a gTLD that is being treated differently then more common TLDs. But it's hardly ICANN's place to get involved. The biggest issue here is usability.

People make typo's often and software can't always be sure if it should linkify something _just_ because it contains a dot. The definite way to be sure is people add the scheme `https://` or linkify the text using an app-specific way. Outside of that, every app has to make its own usability decision and some apps will correctly decide to ignore some unpopular TLDs for the sake of reducing annoyance.

azeemba··on Intuition for Cryptography
As the author, I am surprised to hear this.

The first time `age` is mentioned is halfway down in the article. `age` is only mentioned twice and both times as a reference to cite their usage of specific algorithms. I thought it would be more appropriate to cite algorithm choices of modern software written by security experts than me picking algorithms.

I also don't describe what `age` is and its use-cases. So I would have trouble calling that marketing.

azeemba··on Introduction to Hilbert Space (2022) [pdf]
It helped me to look up an example of a space that is not "complete".

Turns out, rational numbers are the classic example of a space that is not complete. A sequence of rational numbers can approximate pi but pi itself doesn't exist in the space (since its irrational). So the rational numbers that get closer and closer to pi form a limit to a value that's not in the space.

azeemba··on Introduction to Hilbert Space (2022) [pdf]
The author's website has a treasure trove of articles explaining different things in Physics: https://www.cphysics.org/
azeemba··on FaceFusion: Next generation face swapper and enhancer
Since face swapping tools crop.up frequently, what is their pitch? What are the non-abusive use cases for face swapping?
azeemba··on Be careful of the examples you use. They stick
example.com is officially reserved in the spec for this use case. Is the .example TLD reserved as well?
azeemba··on Breaking Changes in Distributed Systems
Oh surprised to see my post on HN! Let me know if there is any feedback on the diagrams.
azeemba··on The Dome: A simple violation of determinism in Newtonian mechanics (2005)
> Because once you properly set the initial state of the ball (force=velocity=0, or any other values), then the solution becomes unique and that’s it,

The original tumblr post linked to this wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picard%E2%80%93Lindel%C3%B6f_t... The initial conditions here are _not_ sufficient to pin to a unique solution.

> anything acting on it would violate other principles of classical mechanics

What other principles of classical mechanics does it violate though? I think that's the point of the exercise. To reflect on part of our mathematical modeling would prevent this.

azeemba··on The Dome: A simple violation of determinism in Newtonian mechanics (2005)
And in quantum mechanics, we don't even know if spacetime is quantized right?

People usually talk about planck length as some quantized length but it's just a scale where quantum effects are significant.

azeemba··on The Dome: A simple violation of determinism in Newtonian mechanics (2005)
The post itself doesn't seem to have much details. The linked article seems to have more info: https://sites.pitt.edu/~jdnorton/Goodies/Dome/

Edit: Looks like the post has been updated to point here. Just for completeness, it used to point to https://johncarlosbaez.wordpress.com/2023/08/05/nortons-dome...

azeemba··on A new class of tiny, self-propelled robots that can zip through liquid at speed
Anyone know what is the smallest man-made powered device capable of mechanical movement?

I assume we can make mm-scale things. Considering that this 20um item is in the news and isn't powered, maybe mm scale is where the current limit is?

azeemba··on I want to talk about WebGPU
https://github.com/GraphiteEditor/Graphite

Web based graphics editor where the engine is written in rust. I think it uses tauri

azeemba··on Interactive live solutions of PDE systems
Oh this is not my project. Was just sharing because its cool.

I found it on reddit where some of the creators have shared some info: https://www.reddit.com/r/math/comments/12rslm0/visualpde_ins...

The about page also credits the creators: https://visualpde.com/about/

azeemba··on Interactive live solutions of PDE systems
Here is an example of the wave equation (you can tap/click anywhere to create a disturbance): https://visualpde.com/sim/?preset=waveEquation
azeemba··on Contexto: Find the Secret Word
Seems similar to https://semantle.com/ but backed by a different "similarity" calculation.

The "bar" visualization is also nicer to track how close/far you are.

azeemba··on BioModels
Looking around at some models, they seem to be like state machines to describe specific subsystems of different organisms.

The seem to be using a markup format called [SBML](https://synonym.caltech.edu/).

> Many software tools and databases support SBML directly. You don’t write in SBML yourself—your software does it for you.

So its likely that you aren't supposed to parse/write the SBML directly. The BioModels website also provides PNGs so you can look at the state machines visually.

azeemba··on Blender moves from Phabricator to Gitea
The decision to move to gitea was made before that announcement.

I wonder if gitea decided to become a company after they saw the interest from Blender. I know blender folks were asking questions about the long term future of the project.

For reference, here are threads asking for proposals on solutions to consider and announcement of gitea being picked:

azeemba··on Stable Attribution
Yea it feels misleading. I think finding attribution is genuinely a hard problem and a solution in this space would be valuable.

I don't think such a solution can work just based on the resulting image though. It probably needs to input prompt to have any chance of working.

azeemba··on The Last Man (Mary Shelley novel)
Based on the comments here, I assume the link used to redirect to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Man_(Mary_Shelley_nov...

But now it seems to go to the disambiguation page

azeemba··on Bitwarden design flaw: Server side iterations
Number of iterations being discussed is how many times the password is hashed. It is a setting the system chooses and is independent of the password length the user chooses.

If you are asking if the length of the password by itself be sufficient to create a secure password, then the answer is mostly no. You need many iterations of the hashing process otherwise brute force attacks become trivial given today's hardware.

azeemba··on The Point of the Banach-Tarski Theorem
As the author points out that Banach-Tarski theorem is an example of hard-to-accept result that comes out of the easy-to-accept axiom of choice.

There is a popular quote that related to this:

> The axiom of choice is obviously true, the well-ordering principle obviously false, and who can tell about Zorn's lemma?

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axiom_of_choice

Axiom of choice, the well-ordering principle and Zorn's lemma are equivalent statements (any one proves the other two). But each has a very different "believability" feel to it.

azeemba··on Tell HN: MS forcing Edge shortcut on desktop
The desktop icon being shown once is reasonable but re-adding it after the user deletes it seems excessive.
azeemba··on Use the wrong tool for the job
There is you the individual and there is the group at work. I think this article is talking more about making decisions that impact the workplace.

Not all arguments between the individuals and the workplace translate because the workplace is a dynamic set of individuals. So any decision made for the workplace has to work for the people currently at work but also for future people you will onboard.

azeemba··on Detect breaches with Canary credit cards
Usually they test the set of cards with small charges. This allows them to sell pre-tested cards at higher value.

So if you can find out that one of your canary cards have been tested, you can have some confidence that your whole set has been compromised.

azeemba··on Show HN: Names
So I just typed each letter to see what the pattern was. Is there a reason you had the pattern rotate the other way after `m`?
azeemba··on A page with no code
Link header seemed very exotic to me. I was very surprised to hear that that exists
azeemba··on GitHub is sued, and we may learn something about Creative Commons licensing
Has there been a law suit filed on the image generation side? Dalle and Stable Diffusion trained on images on the web, a lot of which weren't even freely licensed. So I would think similar legal arguments would apply there.
azeemba··on Degenerate matter: How reality deals with uncertainty
I checked and there don't seem to be any IP restrictions or geo-restrictions.

Do you mind sharing what browser/platform you are using?

azeemba··on Debloating Windows 10 with one command and no internet scripts
I hadn't heard of this command. `Get-AppxPackage` seems to enumerate all the packages that the post talks about so its a good way to explore in a non-destructive way.

It does remove the Microsoft Store and WSL with it which is important to me. Maybe a safer strategy is to look through that list and remove specifically the ones that are annoying

azeemba··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
Let's say Class A depends on Class B. A lot of people have the instincts to have A construct B so that the callers of A don't have to worry about it.

But this makes testing A in isolation difficult. When testing A, you want to mock out B with an instance the test can manipulate.

So we want A to not create B, instead we want B to be "injected" into A. The general strategy of having B passed into A is called dependcy injection.
