ayakura··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
https://github.com/aptrinh/Radio-Qt5

An Internet Radio app with local playlist (.xspf) support.

I still need to make a feasible .exe for Windows (preferably pyinstaller with --onefile but apparently assets are missing unless I place them right next to the .exe - in which case, it won't just be one .exe I will ship to users =( )

ayakura··on Mozilla Lifeboat
This is a nice gesture and it's good to see people reaching out to those who lost their jobs at Mozilla.
ayakura··on A graphical analysis of women's tops sold on Goodwill's website
In the "Goodwill Tops by State Over Time" blocks there's a state called Michegan right above Michigan. Made me look up to see if it was called that at any point in the past, but it seems to be a typo :)
ayakura··on Trump suspends H1B, H4 visas till year end
Apologies. I had to clip part of the EO's official title to fit the title requirement.
ayakura··on Ask HN: What do you think about the self-promotion titles on GitHub?
I'll chip in because the OP's sentiment is fairly understandable, as there's no concrete metric that people use to quantify how "useful" one's tagline is on Github.

Also, you did mention that OP isn't attacking anyone, so I don't understand the purpose of flagging - even though the post may "seem" negative. I personally feel it's not.

ayakura··on Ask HN: What to do with a old MacBook Pro?
I kept my old laptop (used to be win7, now Ubuntu) since my printer only support USB printing. Other than that you can keep it for side projects within your LAN =)
ayakura··on Extremely disillusioned with technology. Please help
Then you're still friends. Depending on your performance and how both of you treat each other, that friendship may become affected but as long as you still treat each other as friends and hang out, that friendship will continue.

Of course, that was just my anecdotal experience.

ayakura··on Let's hear scientists with different Covid-19 views, not attack them
> How do we teach people to draw that line

By teaching people to recognize where faulty data are and how they were collected. I always encourage people to look at several sources of news and figure out conclusions on their own, ignoring potential bias. [0]

It's never a lost cause to emphasize the importance of digging through an academic paper or a news article, effectively doing their own research instead of just listening to figureheads and looking through headlines.

ayakura··on CoroVent – pulmonary ventilator for Covid-19 patients
> "Our prototypes are being tested by regulatory authority, while we’re running a pre-production batch of a few dozen pieces"

Since they are currently under review I'll wait a bit to see the results, but other than that the prototypes seem well made. Good job

ayakura··on How to stay private when using Android
That's a bit misleading. The 12th point did say:

> In order to use a more secure search engine, you need to download an alternative browser [0]. These let you change the default search engine and avoid Google collecting data on your queries.

The above article lists Brave, Firefox and Tor

ayakura··on I Survived the “Destroying Angel” (2006)
When I was younger, I was taught not to pick up or eat colorful mushrooms - the more colors they had, the deadlier they were, supposedly. At the time, I thought it made sense as the same rule applied for poisonous frogs.

After reading the article and looking at Wikipedia's list of deadly fungus species, I'm not so sure if that rule also applies to mushrooms: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deadly_fungus_species

ayakura··on Regarding Last Weekend’s Hearthstone Grandmasters Tournament
My own take throughout the whole thing is similar to Brian Kibler's [1]. To me, even though it made sense that Blizzard wanted to stay neutral, the punishment was too severe for all of the people involved (zero prize money, 1 year ban) so it's nice that at least one of them was reverted.

[1]: http://bmkgaming.com/statement-on-blitzchung/

Sidenote, Linus is reading the statement on the WAN show and he mentioned that Blizzard was "Lawful Evil." That's a pretty solid way to put it

ayakura··on Simjacker – Next Generation Spying over Mobile
> The benefit of Simjacker from the attacker’s perspective is that many of its attacks seems to work independent of handset types

> Mobile Operators could also try to change the security settings of UICCs in the field remotely, or even uninstall and stop using the S@T Browser technology completely, but this may be slower and considerably more difficult to do.

I'm very curious to see what the actual fix will be and whether or not the general public will become more aware of the fact that their phones had always been vulnerable to SIMjacking. How do mobile operators usually notify customers of these large-scale exploits?

ayakura··on Key Negotiation of Bluetooth Attack
Direct link to research paper: https://www.usenix.org/system/files/sec19-antonioli.pdf

Relevant results are on page 1057. It's crazy to think all of the devices tested were vulnerable up to Bluetooth 5.0, but at least the attacker would need to be within range of broadcast, as another user pointed out

ayakura··on A man who ran out of air at the bottom of the ocean
>If you lower the brain temperature down to 30C (86F), it can increase the survival time from 10 to 20 minutes. If you cool the brain to 20C (68F), you can get an hour.

Wow, I actually didn't know this until now. Is this method used anywhere in medical procedures to resuscitate or prolong life?

ayakura··on Google to unveil gaming project today at 1pm ET
My bets are on news regarding:

- Something related to VR, which will probably push competitions in the VR gaming sphere

- Or their game streaming service as seen in the AC test run (this is more likely)

- Or some type of gaming hardware (prebuilt gaming-focused PC) - This is least likely going to happen but we'll see

ayakura··on Dubai 'gender balance' award 2018 winners are all men
From the article:

> The full titles of the awards were:

- Best Personality Supporting Gender Balance

- Best Federal & Institutional Authority Supporting Gender Balance

- Best Gender Balance Initiative

I'm not sure what the writer is trying to say here as 2 out of these 3 titles are for people who 'support gender balance.' Wouldn't it make sense for males to do so if that's the agenda of these awards?

ayakura··on GamesBeat managing editor Jason Wilson’s favorite games of 2018
Oh hey MTG:A finally made someone's list! This was the first card game I have played in a while, having dabbled in Hearthstone before and disliked Blizzard's aesthetic choices. There's something about MTGA that I can't put a finger on in terms of design that's so "attractive" and makes me come back to it every 2 days.

I honestly can't wait to see what WOTC will do to make it shine as an Esport. Hopefully something unique.

ayakura··on Less Turbulence on Delta Flights?
This article sounds like an ad, but in any case cutting cost and achieving higher customer satisfaction are all good things so props to Delta for that.

However, I have to wonder why the article makes it seem like only Delta is using data for turbulence avoidance and not other big players. Is this a relatively new thing when it comes to Big Data in airlines?

Edit: This is an ad after all

ayakura··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
I don't understand it either. It was a really weird design choice facilitated by Apple. My assumption is that Google doesn't want to be seen as a non-innovator by not having a notch in their phones.

If someone else can provide a more plausible reason, I'm all ears =D
