PSA: DO NOT USE OLLAMA FOR TESTING.

Ollama silently (!!!) drops messages if the context window is exceeded (instead of, you know, just erroring? who in the world made this decision).

The workaround until now was to (not use ollama or) make sure to only send a single message. But now they seem to silently truncate single messages as well, instead of erroring! (this explains the sibling comment where a user could not reproduce the results locally).

Use LM Studio, llama.cpp, openrouter or anything else, but stay away from ollama!

> Russia's military, outside of it's nukes is a Potemkin affair.

Let‘s hope that its nukes are a Potemkin affair as well.

axiosgunnar··on How This Ends
> I see Russia winning on all fronts tbh.

I do not, and anyone else not trying to be contrarian and edgy on the back's of a humanitarian catastrophe does not either. Russia's goal was a blitzkrieg surprise win, measured in hours, taking over the capital and the government, before the West could even muster up sanctions. They have failed abysmally at that, and capturing a few towns in Eastern Ukraine (just a little bit more than they already had captured since 2014) is Putin's attempt to have something in his hands to present as a victory and hope not to get couped to death (a fate all warmongers rightfully deserve).

Russia most certainly isn't winning.

axiosgunnar··on Tunneling Wikipedia through WhatsApp to (maybe?) get around WiFi restrictions
This is a very good question.

I would also assume that Whatsapp might change the servers used with updates of the app. How would Delta deal with that? Just wait for the complaints to come in?

axiosgunnar··on Atlassian comes clean on what data-deleting script behind outage did
> The good news is that there are backups, and Atlassian retains them for 30 days. The bad news is that while the company can restore all customers into a new environment or roll back individual customers that accidentally delete their own data, there is no automated system to restore "a large subset" of customers into an existing environment, meaning data has to be laboriously pieced together.

I never understood this. Then why just not restore the entire server and let the „smaller subset“ of previously unaffected customers eat crap? The whole story would have been „sorry for some reason we had to reset to our backups from yesterday, newer data was lost“, and at the outage would be over in <6h.

axiosgunnar··on Fully-remote startup communication across ~8 time zones
I think 1-to-1 meetings are usually OK (perhaps this is obvious and that would then rather be called a „call“?), because everybody is engaged 100% of the time, and it becomes obvious when it‘s time to end.

Note this is fake news.
axiosgunnar··on Justice Stevens reads the fine print
Do note though that „legal fine print“ is similar to „React-Node.js-Mongodb“ boilerplate.

Meaning that it sometimes makes sense to not have to start off at zero.

Also complaining about long contracts is like saying „I don't like this program because the source code is too long“. Depending on the program, this might be a little capricious.

Do you want lawyers to be „code golfing“?

Fascinating.

I wonder if nerds like us could optimize the „bitrate“ of this.

Lvng out mddl vcls is one vry smpl optn, fr exmpl.

There must be even better ways, if you consider the frequency of words, for example.

I wouldnt be surprised if one could reduce bits needed to express a sentence by 90%, if those numerologists that proved their worth with predicting Wordle solutions had a look at that.

axiosgunnar··on The Anonymous collective has leaked the database of Nestlé. Leaked 10GB data
I don't even try to argue with people like you anymore. One dictator is starting a literal war of aggression and you will still have armchair philosophers argue like this. I want my country and its allies to impose maximum damage on Russia, as a matter of principle. I frankly do not care about hypothetical collateral damage anymore, as right this minute we have artillery glassing Mariupol and Kiev, any arguing is moot.
axiosgunnar··on 3,599,040,600 € wired by Germany to Russia since the invasion of Ukraine
Yes. (nobody will freeze to death btw)

And the reasoning is as follows:

The actually morally necessary step is to establish a no-fly zone above Ukraine, enforced by force with NATO fighter jets and anti-aircraft systems.

People (possibly rightfully) consider that this could lead to a WW3, possibly escalating into the usage of nuclear weapons.

So far so good.

So the bargain we do is basically "Ukraine, we would do everything for you, except for starting WW3, which you hopefully understand!".

Really? Everything? Then quit Russian gas cold turkey! No matter how bad it will be (possibly fairly bad, I admit), it will still be less than WW3, which we bargain is the only thing that we don't want, everything else we would do for Ukraine.

Can anybody put this into better words??

Sorry for OP but tbh, his pain is nothing compared to literally dying as many Ukrainians are right now.

axiosgunnar··on Tell HN: Mailchimp locked my account because I'm Russian
This attempted generalization is a whataboutism.

Very few governments initiate wars.

It‘s only in this specific and utterly exceptional situation that yes, the citizen's should be cancelled because their government started a war and sanctioning them is our only less-than-WW3 option.

axiosgunnar··on Ask HN: Are we seeing a start of the wider conflict?
If NATO territory is attacked, then obviously NATO would retaliate as that is the very purpose of NATO, but some sources were saying that Jens Soltenberg extended that to attack on the convoys inside Ukraine as well:

> “Today, the head of NATO… Mr. Stoltenberg has made a statement: if a single projectile, a single bullet hits a convoy that … [is delivering arms] to Ukraine, [NATO] will consider it a trigger for Article 5 [of the North Atlantic Treaty],” Danilov said while on air on Rada, the Ukrainian parliament's TV Channel.

I know that is not the most truthworthy source of course.

axiosgunnar··on [dead]
Gotcha.
axiosgunnar··on Ask HN: Are we seeing a start of the wider conflict?
I hope that Putin saying that the negotiations are a few days short of a breakthrough are not just lies and distractions, and that his losses have been substantial enough that he is willing to give up (= sign a peace treaty).

That would obviously be the best outcome for all and would put an end to any escalation.

What might happen instead is that this is only to buy time to do something nasty like a chemical attack, or slowly capturing one city after another, kidnapping the mayors and installing their own puppets.

How this might escalate is that Nato has already stated that if their convoys are attacked, they invoke Art. 5, and Putin has says that he considers the convoys valid targets.
