A high interest in statistics, I really enjoy making computers behave "fluently" by using ML, NLP and other weak AI.

axiak··on Google's Python style guide
This isn't Scala. In python list comprehensions are single threaded and have a very specific meaning (i.e., their computation order is deterministic). The pattern for working with parallel maps etc are done with separate map functions (see concurrent.futures.Executor.map).
axiak··on Brief Video: Rewriting JavaScript into CoffeeScript
Oh, sorry I missed that!
axiak··on Brief Video: Rewriting JavaScript into CoffeeScript
Since ?= looks so familiar, any chance of an elvis or defined-or operator in coffeescript?

    if a? then a else 0
becomes either

    a ?: 0 (if you like groovy)
or

    a // 0 (if you like perl)
axiak··on GIMP 2.8: Preview
I guess the question is whether or not you're using a powerful window manager or not. Most window managers in linux support easy always-on-top and layers, so the multi-window UI really shines.
axiak··on Python doesn’t play nicely with others
Of course, you're using a package from CPAN. This article mentioned envoy from pypi but refutes it as being "not part of the standard library". The two good solutions he mentions (communicate and envoy) he dismisses for what seem silly or non-reasons to me. (an ill-defined "clumsy" and "not part of the stdlib").
axiak··on A primer on Python decorators
In flask, the app.route decorator mutates the app object. There are no globals necessary. Use of globals to maintain state is an orthogonal issue to use of decorators to update registries.
axiak··on A primer on Python decorators
The decorator can do anything. In flask the decorator syntax is just shorthand for adding the route to a registry which is looked up every request.

The source code is pitifully small: https://bitbucket.org/mitsuhiko/flask/src/4d82231621fc/flask...

axiak··on Released: Python 2.6.8, 2.7.3, 3.1.5, and 3.2.3
I believe perl fixed this issue years ago (and this recent wave of discovery was based on a paper which was sent to perl maintainers long ago). Ruby fixed this issue in 1.9 before it was a big deal. I am not aware if Ruby 1.8 has backported a fix yet.

axiak··on Bad News: Google Is Doing The Corporate Future-Vision Video Thing
> I mean, do we really think Google will be able to pull off a context-aware "hmmm" as a vocal trigger signifying desired interaction with a pop-up alert?

We have no idea what they have currently built, but from an article a few weeks ago it seems that they integrate with gestures, not audio cues. It's entirely reasponable that the head nodding you saw when he said "hmmm" was what caused the popup.

axiak··on CSS3 Animated Loading Bar
This looks cool! Any chance of releasing this under a license?
axiak··on Ask HN: This is my first open-source project. Feedback?
He's making a graph library, not a chart library...
axiak··on Fabric Engine: JavaScript as fast as C++
I think you've just described cython. A higher-than-c level language that trivially binds to the higher target language.
axiak··on WebSockets Follow-Up
Websockets is designed to work over all of the existing HTTP proxy systems that currently exist. Could you imagine a system that's backwards incompatible with the world wide web? In many institutions (schools, workplaces), internet access is filtered through a proxy server.
axiak··on WebSockets Follow-Up
You can also use a real distributed queue or zeromq. The problem is that it's easy to do all of the websocket notification in on process, and a lot of examples people follow (e.g. node.js) seem to assume there's one process to manage everything.
axiak··on Superior jQuery plugin template
What happens if I type:

    $("blah").wTooltip(new String("color"));
In my recent jquery plugin I considered doing a typeof check myself but decided against it since it was too brittle. I instead checked to see if the options was === what I expected it to be first.
axiak··on Why I Don't Want to Learn Go
My understanding is that go still provides a lot of tools to indicate when you want memory allocated and where the memory will go (which can optionally be left out). If these were used, wouldn't that make it easier for the go gc to perform better?
axiak··on FTP Must Die
Huh? As long as you have XHR and JS, you can do file upload progress bars. Gmail has been doing it for years, and I've certainly had implementations going back to 2007.

Now, if the upload is failed for whatever reason (i.e. the file is rejected in-progress), then the upload failure mode is terrible unless you resort to the usual iframe hackery (Connection Reset screen).

HTML5 XHR file upload is certainly a cleaner solution and something everybody has wanted, but it's certainly not needed for progress and status reported in-page without flash.

axiak··on A Spellchecker Used To Be A Major Feat of Software Engineering
Really? Most teachers I had would put WW (wrong word) or WC (word choice) to imply that the word is incorrect, which is considered grammatical.
axiak··on Snapshot: Viaweb, June 1998
When studying vocab, some words stick out as words you'll never see, and because of that you may fixate on that single word. For me it's eleemosynary. Still haven't seen it used. Once.
axiak··on A Programming Idiom You've Never Heard Of
You can always fp.seek(0) and iterate again. Iteration and file openness are separate concepts, and any API worth its salt (e.g. the python file api) keeps it that way.
axiak··on Show HN: A simple rangeset data structure in python
I have to indicate this in the docs, but the most prevalent use for this module would probably be rangesets on the space of dates. For this, python's datetime objects Just Work. And all operations returning the size/measure will just return a timedelta object.

axiak··on Java decides to go with single arrow for closures
They claim that it's not what others are doing, but coffeescript is doing it, and it's quite possible that ECMAScript will get it in the future.
