axblount··on Veo
I saw one of those where a guy just made videos about increasingly elaborate AI generated cakes. You're right, I guess we're mostly there.

But those still require some human input. I'm imagining a sort of genetic algorithm for video prompts, no human editing, input, or curation required.

axblount··on Veo
I hate to be so cynical, but I'm dreading the inevitable flood of AI generated video spam.

We really are about this close to infinite jest. Imagine TikTok's algorithm with on demand video generation to suit your exact tastes. It may erase the social aspect, but for many users I doubt that would matter too much. "Lurking" into oblivion.

axblount··on Is the largest root of a random real polynomial more likely real than complex?
The real line and the complex plane have the same cardinality.
axblount··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
Is this related to the solar storm? Why is it pink?
axblount··on Ask HN: What should we expect from OpenAI's live show on Monday?
They're going to crush a bunch of programmers in a giant hydraulic press.
axblount··on Is the largest root of a random real polynomial more likely real than complex?
The important thing is that multplying a polynomial by a constant doesn't change its roots.
axblount··on Are We Talking Too Much About Mental Health?
I don't think we talk enough about the state of the world. Is our society creating the conditions for a life worth living?

You can look at an individual and say, "Find meaningful work. Explore your passions. Connect with others." But when this advice becomes so universal as to be meaningless, we have to ask: why are we placing people in a river of loneliness and drudgery and telling them to swim against the current?

axblount··on New capacitor with 19-times energy density
Could be useful for Mach effect thrusters. More transient mass to push against.
axblount··on [dead]
Is this crankery? Seems like most of the content on the website ia written by one guy, but it tries to give the appearance of a large foundation. His bio says he works on "Unification Theory."
axblount··on Product Roadmap
Exactly. And it's hard to overstate how little the average user cares about the AT Protocol.

"You can change providers!" "You mean sign up on another website? Like when I moved here from Twitter?"

axblount··on J.G. Ballard predicted the rise of social media (2016)
That's a good point. I meant "technical" in the narrow sense of working with modern or cutting edge technology. For example, to my knowlege he was not an avid or early user of the internet, yet he seems to have a good sense of the effect it has on us. Technologists are constantly trying to predict the future but the humanists usually hit closer to the mark.
axblount··on J.G. Ballard predicted the rise of social media (2016)
Ballard, like William Gibson, is one of those people that despite having zero technical know how, seems to intuitively understand how people interface with technology.

Crash is often seen as completely outlandish, but it's hard to see echoes of Robert Vaughan in today's culture. We watch A24's Civil War the same way that Vaughan and Ballard would watch a car crash.

axblount··on Jack Dorsey Leaving Bluesky
Any particular reason he is leaving?
axblount··on Ansible is a Lisp?
I don't know Ansible well enough to say for sure, but the macro example seems like more of a C preprocessor style "macro." I don't see how it's doing anything more than filling in a template.
axblount··on [dead]
Are there any other outlets broadcasting in Israel that have correspondents in Gaza?
axblount··on Ansible is a Lisp?
Not everything that can be represented with s-expressions is a lisp. For example:

  (html
    (body
      (h1 "Hello, World!")))
This does not mean that HTML is a lisp.
axblount··on A flat map with the least error possible: The Gott-Goldberg-Vanderbei projection
It's performing the projection in real time. It has to because you can change the perspective of the projection by clicking on the map.
axblount··on Quantum Algorithms for Lattice Problems
Does this result apply to all LWE problems? Does this approach care about LWE vs Ring-LWE at all?

If so, it's a big blow to systems like FrodoKEM that banked on unstructured lattices providing higher security.

axblount··on Adobe Firefly is doing generative AI differently and it may even be good for you
> “We’re using hundreds of millions of assets, all trained and moderated to have no IP,” said Costin.

This article has lots of talk about IP, trademark, copyright, etc., but doesn't speak to the rights of artists. It's good that they're paying contributors, but are they given the choice to opt out?

axblount··on World Trying to Quit Fossil Fuels Gets Flood of Gas Instead
> I've invested in 27 oil wells.

> The big guys are taking the little guys money, divesting, and leaving us holding the bag of crap.

You're not one of the little guys. You're not the one who's going to be left holding the bag. The real "bag" isn't underperforming investments. It's ecosystem collapse.

axblount··on The "Cheap" Web
Has there been a serious attempt to define an html/css subset that achieves these kinds of goals? Something that a mere mortal could implement and would cover the vast majority of web designs?

I understand the urge to throw out the old and replace it with a new system, but that would be a huge blow to accessiblilty and adoption.

axblount··on Robin Williams’ daughter Zelda slams AI for recreating her father’s voice
AI isn't creating faithful reproductions of artwork. It's creating strange remixes of prior work without the artist's input or consent.
axblount··on Category Theory Illustrated – Sets
This gives rise to Russell's Paradox:

Does the set of "all sets that do not contain themselves" contain itself?

axblount··on Most promoted and blocked domains among Kagi Search users
For the Washington Post, it's probably because of the paywall.
axblount··on Ramda: A practical functional library for JavaScript programmers
I don't think they're arguing against abstractions. Just this one in particular.
axblount··on The Fall of Stack Overflow
The issue is that sometimes poeple just want 'X by Y'. To get a question answered, you shouldn't have to list every constraint and design descision that led you to that point.

Comes up all the time when people ask how to do things in bash/sh. I know there are better tools for the job, but this is the one I have.

axblount··on Negative Mass
I'm not sure about negative mass, but negative energy density can be achieved with the Casimir effect.

axblount··on PCSX2 is an open source PS2 Emulator
I played through my copy of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance on PCSX2. It ran great.

You don't have to suffer through wonky PC ports.

axblount··on Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement
Swartz distributed information for everyone to use freely. These companies are processing it privately to develop their for-profit products. Big difference, IMO.
