awinder··on Genesis' Crypto-Lending Unit Is Suspending Withdrawals in Wake of FTX Collapse
If it makes you feel any better, it’s extremely tiresome to a different cohort to see people make the claim that the future of finance is stuffing cash under the mattress and burying gold bars in their backyards
awinder··on Typing “old” (space) into iOS Safari crashes the app

awinder··on Crypto exchange AAX suspends withdrawals
And gold costs money to store, i.e there’s an interest rate charged to you. Its value does change though — in positive & negative directions that don’t correlate to inflation or an underlying monetary fundamental. Because it’s not money or a money equivalent.
awinder··on Crypto exchange AAX suspends withdrawals
Most people are, in fact, willing to trade the government preventing lawlessness with money for the protection of the law with regards to their money. It’s a great trade, for non-criminals.

It also addresses the bankruptcy problem with government loss protection + regulation on net reserves (which worked and are tweaked as multiple overlapping failure conditions are tested, last in 2008).

awinder··on 1-in-6 managers told to deprioritize hiring white men, 48% diversity over merit
I’m inclined to believe it’s a crap survey:

“All participants had to pass through demographic filters to ensure they were age 18 or older, currently employed for wages or self-employed, and manage at least 25% of the hiring at their workplace.”

Manage 25% of total company hiring? So what, they’re tiny companies with big fat DEI programs? Who actually got interviewed here?

awinder··on FTX faces potential hack, sees mysterious outflows totaling more than $600M
“In January 2013, a judge approved a settlement that would return 93 percent of customers' investments”

A great deal larger than nothing.

awinder··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
These donations were pretty clearly part of a forward-play on having a prominent seat at the table for writing regulations, it’s not really a secret that they were planning to try to starve out Binance through crypto regulation.

Also while it’s kind of a thing to buy influence to the legislative process, buying your way out of justice isn’t really. There’s way too much apparatus outside of electoral politics. FTX wasn’t investigated because what were they going to be investigated for, it’s an unregulated offshore financial outfit with no signs of distress until it went boom, like most “Ponzi schemes”.

awinder··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
Congratulations, you just lost all your invested capital on Truth Social 2.0.
awinder··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
You’d need to do this TO the subscribers because the problem he’s trying to address is that now there’s a bunch of fake people with a “verified” status who are running scams on people or polluting news (like Fake Verified Labron James trade news going wild before realizing, wait, it’s a fake).

So then the downside is that you start bouncing people because is a checkmark worth getting captchas? Or maybe you put captchas on everyone so that the experience blows for everyone, and pray it helps?

Or maybe you just don’t conflate paying $8 with being “verified”, unless you’re gonna, yknow, verify something.

awinder··on How did NPR’s pre-election poll get things so so so wrong?
“nobody — nobody — was predicting that the Republicans would win by 12 or 16 percentage points.”

An excess 14% thinking republicans will win doesn’t predict a 14% margin, it predicts 14% excess probability that republicans win, by some amount.

Even that I’d be skeptical over though. I think this question is basically measuring which media narrative has become predominant & by how much.

awinder··on Redfin cuts 13% of staff, shuts down home-flipping business

Pull back to max timeframe, housing starts are around a 60+ year average trend (and have been for many years)

awinder··on Twitter Now Asks Some Fired Workers to Please Come Back
“This is why Elon is a genius for keeping these employees on staff for 3 months instead of laying them off; now he can just get them back to work or they refuse and he saves 3 months of salary!”
awinder··on A Blindingly Obvious Solution to the Fake News Dilemma (2021)
I don’t find the “kids in their 20s” stuff very compelling and it kinda unnecessarily weakens the argument.

It’s a pretty stretched argument, fresh grads are likely writing some code on these solutions, but there’s undoubtedly egads of “adults in the room” discussing policy, overseeing employees, in the team management chain.

Additionally if we are gonna commit ageism war, there’s a cottage industry of 50+ers who are consuming this obvious garbage and then participating in a democracy based on it. I submit ridiculousness rages across the entire age spectrum.

awinder··on From Google to Twitter

awinder··on Twitter Blue for $8/Month
“We need to pay the bills somehow! Twitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?”

If you can see mocking in those 3 sentences then I can metaphorically see you popping up and down on elons lap.

awinder··on Why U.S. Public Debt Matters [audio]
That’s a long-term debt though, not a yearly deficit. The aggregate debt position of the individual improves over time while the government’s gets worse (and non-linearly at that).

But, that’s also math that applies to net-indebted people. The US has tons of asset wealth and you’d have to treat its financial position accordingly. You can run a 1.85 debt to gdp rate forever if your net assets accumulate at GDP in value yearly, for instance (not saying asset growth = 1 GDP is a true figure, but the factor is huge and unaccounted for).

awinder··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
Even something like that pay-for-pto plan seems so flirtatious with trouble. It’s not a move that’s in the fiduciary interest of Tesla shareholders, and mixing personal money into it might even make that more clear.

Elons got a large bench of people who cheerled this thing, ask Larry Ellison for some people who can go audit this thing over multi-months.

awinder··on Meta stock price drops more than 20%
Is there some different treatment of money spent on options (vs RSUs) that isn’t apparent from the Shopify blog post? I’m not understanding why someone would pick options ever in this scenario but maybe I’m just getting thrown off by demo text in the blog post
awinder··on Not the Time to Get Greedy: House Flippers Getting Burned by US Housing Downturn
These are all pretty much problems on a short horizon and only if you compromise emergency savings to finance your rental property, which isn’t a great idea. Once you’ve established rental income and a few years of paying on loan this situation flips and your income stream becomes an asset in these situations.

Also purchase disability insurance, there’s no reason to excessively worry about a tail risk that is very affordable to protect against. If you’ve got second house money you had disability insurance money a while ago.

awinder··on The new Mac Pro chip could double or quadruple the power of the M2 Max
This rumor states that Apple is testing a configuration with 256gb of RAM, not that it’s the highest build-to-order configuration of this to-be-announced machine.
awinder··on As Covid hit, Washington officials traded stocks with exquisite timing
There are all kinds of existent laws and regulations on former elected officeholders allowed lobbying activities, many of the toothier ones at the state level but there’s still a 2 year cool off at the federal level for congress. They’d run afoul of 1A protections if there was indeed an unfettered right to be paid to lobby on the behalf of others.
awinder··on Ask HN: Has anyone managed to find enjoyment in their work after burnout?
I know a lot of teachers who give much more to humanity than e.g., the CEO of Equifax. People in the marketing department at Phillip Morris undoubtedly make more money than people working for doctors without boarders. This is severely flawed logic, people get from the free market what a series of pricing mechanics based on numerous factors like supply & demand and underlying business segment margins produce. It has nothing to do with positive impacts on humanity.
awinder··on Web 3.0 – The Great Con
There’s nothing “dumb” with building wealth (to finance retirement or otherwise) with stocks/funds. It’s the primary mechanism the rich use to build and retain wealth.

Pensions have major issues. The government has not made a very good case for “we should manage more retirement funds” with the state of the SSI trust. 401ks are a next move to address downfalls and failures with how other options have played out. But yeah anyone can do dumb shit with money to their detriment; that’s very difficult to overcome.

awinder··on Apple Music and Mercedes-Benz bring immersive Spatial Audio to drivers
1. Reverts to the standard vehicle interface

2. Siri is activated by user input (holding a button / pressing a button in-car) with a side feature for hot mic (hey siri) that’s disabled by default

3. Maybe there’s car implementation solely driven by Siri? Hondas is touch screen and Mazda is button/knob based (and touch screen but only when idle).

awinder··on 5G’s Rollout Rattled Hundreds of Pilots
If I inject a new feature into production and it destabilizes existing functionality, it’s the new features fault (and it gets rolled back). It doesn’t matter if I really think it’s the fault of the other component, or I would have designed it differently (especially now that I know the consequences!). Maybe we end up “fixing” the existing functionality and then proceeding with the new feature — but not until stable state is re-established.

This is like standard practice for shit that is of trivial importance to humanity in a newish engineering field. So I don’t for the life of me understand the logic of being more flippant when it comes to human lives in a more established engineering field.

awinder··on Gmail 2FA causes the homeless to permanently lose access 3 times a year
Ugh yeah that was punctuation hell, updated
awinder··on Gmail 2FA causes the homeless to permanently lose access 3 times a year
Gmail offers all of these (except for the second email address): paper backup codes, hardware authenticators, non-Google/gmail authenticator apps. The problem is that homeless people can/do routinely lose the “thing you have” part of 2fa.
awinder··on Watchman: Execute a command when something changes
This wraps inotifywait, so it doesn’t really address cross-platform needs.

The unique features in this over straight inotifywait is plugging together the command you want to execute, and some event dedupe logic. Grand majority of the code is around colorized logs, command docs, and some options handling code which mostly just gets piped to inotifywait.
