awgneo··on How to debloat your Xiaomi 15 Ultra without root access
OxygenOS and ColorOS from OnePlus/Oppo are extremely lightweight from the start on their global edition phones, and tweaks, such as these, always stick. It's not a Chinese phone problem, it's a manufacturing choice, just as it is in the US.
awgneo··on On Charlie Kirk and Saving Civil Society
This sounds a bit like an addiction? We need to find ways to exercise influence in the real world, offline. The connections formed through volunteering or public service are the better weapons.
awgneo··on Beeper vs. Apple battle intensifies: Lawmakers demand DOJ investigation
I too thought this was "Hacker" News, where we found ways to break down barriers and expand access to services to the benefit of society. Apple is absolutely abusing their market position and we should all be finding ways to establish healthy, multi-platform communication standands. It is disheartening to see many folks here fighting for the status quo, which clearly isn't working. Beeper devs are the hackers I will always support, the kind that drive a subconscious shift of our morals to something more inclusive.
awgneo··on Brave Passes 10M Monthly Active Users, Sees 19% Growth Since 1.0 Launch
This is my absolute concern with Brave as well and why I do not trust this browser and its advertising model in the slightest.
awgneo··on The Log: Real-time data's unifying abstraction (2013)
This article continues to be a fantastic introduction to the distributed log and all of the benefits it can bring a project as scaling becomes more complex. When I worked at Salesforce, we successfully implemented Apache Kafka and Storm into our Pardot product to ingest and process millions of user activities per day to progress users inside customer-created automated workflows. Having one source of time series truth is pretty cool.
awgneo··on The Gradual Design System: How We Built Slack Kit
This design system failed to deliver the highly requested feature of a desktop dark mode for five years (until today): https://twitter.com/SlackHQ/status/531941157283315712?s=19

awgneo··on Another Study Blames Uber and Lyft for Public Transit’s Decline
I really wish Brooklyn had as many latitudinal lines as Manhattan. Whenever I visit Brooklyn, Uber/Lyft is always a better option.
awgneo··on Kademlia: A Peer-To-peer Information System Based on the XOR Metric (2002) [pdf]
I have been excited about this project for quite some time. They recently released their Rust client, although without networking. I cannot wait to play with it further as it holds the most promise amongst all "Web3" decentalized platforms.
awgneo··on Women Who Code Moves Global HQ from SF to Atlanta with Help from Home Depot
Congratulations on the move. I've been working in tech for a decade in Atlanta and have always been impressed with the diversity here.
awgneo··on Is there an actual Facebook crisis, or media narrative about Facebook crisis?
Or a narrative about a narrative about a Facebook crisis?
awgneo··on Google Employees Are Quitting Over the Company’s Secretive China Search Project
How often do tech people actually strike?
awgneo··on Techniques for Secure Ethereum Pseudorandom Number Generation
This is an excellent write-up on the different on-chain randomization approaches. If both secret messages are somehow discovered by a hacker, I wonder if it would still be possible to influence the outcome by controlling enough of the hash rate. You would have to be able to insert funds at exact indexes within the participation phase, control the number of participants, and have complete influence over the final future blockhash. Thoughts?
awgneo··on The Internet Isn’t Forever
I am so glad the article mentions IPFS and the great potential it has to solve this very issue.
awgneo··on Whats the logic behind Google rejecting Max Howell, the author of Homebrew?
Who cares?
awgneo··on Goldman Sachs Is Setting Up a Cryptocurrency Trading Desk
I believe this article completely contradicts this belief.
awgneo··on To Save Net Neutrality, We Must Build Our Own Internet
Shill much? There are tons of projects like this doing the same thing and you've already plugged this once.
awgneo··on Facebook's Aggressive Moves on Startups Threaten Innovation
I still have faith in our ability to escape the ill effects of capitalism that are slowly destroying our industry. See Bitcoin & Ethereum.
awgneo··on Tech Giants, Once Seen as Saviors, Are Now Viewed as Threats
Who are they? The founding fathers of America promised Democracy, yet look at the corporate oligarchy in which we now live. You have to fight for this decentralized future in every decision you make.
awgneo··on Tech Giants, Once Seen as Saviors, Are Now Viewed as Threats
How are you measuring efficiency? If something is centralized and widely used, are you even capable of recognizing technological progress now defined by the centralizer?
awgneo··on Amazon to Acquire Whole Foods for $13.7B
They do offer credit cards through third parties. They also have the Amazon payment service that allows third parties to process transactions through Amazon.
awgneo··on Flipped Iceberg (2014)
Like seriously, what the hell link did I just click on? This has to be the worst mobile ad experience in recent memory.
awgneo··on Blockchains Never Forget
Absolutely; blockchain technology is just the shift of power from one group to another.
awgneo··on Ask HN: What frameworks are currently used in a modern web stack?
There are just far too many better choices out there (Elixir, Phoenix) for me to ever consider going back to Microsoft technologies. I still haven't forgotten their ASP.Net MVC framework that nearly made me give up being a developer.
awgneo··on Voice Is the Next Big Platform, and Alexa Will Own It
I agree with this perspective. However, you have to wonder why we don't have more Alexa skills in the platform. Here are a couple of my thoughts.

1. They require you to say "Alexa, tell <app_name> to <do_something>"; This pushes all 3rd party services one level deeper.

2. Amazon competes with too many companies and services these days. Instacart devs won't want to work on a skill within a platform that is itself is a competitor.

awgneo··on Voice Is the Next Big Platform, and Alexa Will Own It
I tried Alexa a month ago and gave up on it within a week. Digital assistants fall flat in walled gardens. It was clear during this week that Alexa only worked well with Amazon services, which were always subpar. Google search? Nope. Support for Chromecast? Nope. Support for Instacart? Nope. It was basically a perverse link to the Amazon-only supply chain.

Google's assistant might be striving for more openness, but I don't have high hopes here either; at least until a formal development kit is released. Given that Google won't be able to use its same tried and true ad revenue strategy, we can expect them to offload voice requests to the highest bidder or prefer Google services above all else. This is another perverse link into Google's realm of anti-privacy; but worse, because they won't be able to do ads along the side. The responses will be the ads.

All of this to say that all of these locked down digital assistants will fail until a company truly approaches it from an open and wholistic perspective, and one that doesn't rely upon troves of private data. These devices may sell well this year, but so did digital picture frames. How many of those are still in use?

awgneo··on Ubiquiti all the things: How I fixed my dodgy Wi-Fi
I've tried DD-WRT and OpenWRT on this particular Linksys router and it was no better, but this is besides the point. It made me step back and realize that I shouldn't ever have to install a third party OS just to have a router that doesn't drop out multiple times per day.
awgneo··on Google launches its own festival to bring together music and technology
Good Fest? That is the best they could come up with?? I'd prefer Don't be Evil Fest 2016 ;)
awgneo··on Announcing Quill 1.0
I just added Quill to a side project site a few days ago, having spent almost three months comparing different WYSIWYG editors. So many of these libraries have gotten bloated over the years or simply have too many bugs. Quill just works for me all of the time. Definitely check it out!
