awesomeusername··on $2599 Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra
I bought a $7000 surface studio a few years ago. It still sits in a box unused as Linux support was extremely difficult to the point I have up after trying to get it to work for a few weeks full time.

If MS get behind Linux this could be huge, but they will need to demonstrate a change in attitude

Serious people don't use windows in 2026

awesomeusername··on Meta VR Glasses
I had the oculus rift, sold it when they made me get a Facebook account (they might have backtracked on that). Bought a quest 2 thinking surely they have learned their lesson by now.

Nope.

Some of the decisions they made around ux are so insane I feel like ripping it off and throwing it across the room. I bet there are some properly talented people at meta, but someone senior is committed to making it suck. Wouldn't be surprised if it's zuck himself. So even though I'm passionate about it, I have no VR in my life because I can't afford another one

"One day in the 1960's I saw my first computer, sized like a ship's bridge where I played a primitive computer game, two dots orbiting a sun."

I'm guessing by your username that had quite the lasting impact

The evil characters on LinkedIn aren't the poor souls posting cringe, it's the 15 people who chime in with encouragement in the comments.

Friends don't let friends post cringe

This could have been whipped up in 5 mins and been a bit meh, but it's excellent.

Whoever did this actually pulled a rabbit out of a hat.

Bravo

awesomeusername··on Launch HN: ProvenMetal (YC S26) delivers circuit boards in days instead of weeks
I'd love a kicad plugin where not just lead times but current stock etc are showed live, and for anything marginal a button I can smash to order it in advance.

Even if 50% of the time I didn't end up using that component, that would still be an amazing service.

We pre-order parts to JLC during the design process. I know people using JLC aren't your target but my advise would be to not ignore how gloriously friction-less it is now buying parts into private inventory - and with no ongoing fees as well. They have really nailed it.

awesomeusername··on Microsoft Is Quietly Deleting Mentions of 32 GB RAM Recommendation for Win 11
Genuine question, especially here on HN. Why would a developer use Windows in 2026?

I even develop windows apps. On Linux, built on GitHub actions.

If I had windows forced on me for corp reasons, like I did once, just full screen a VM

awesomeusername··on Proxmox VE now available for ARM64
I literally am in the process of migrating away from proxmox because they said publicly they would not support arm.

This was necessary, but guys you got the memo too late

it would be interesting if instead of making migration tools - one shot - you could do a migration then sync.

Easier said than done, but changing peoples chat app from under them in an org is a stressful thought. If they could run side by side in sync until a critical mass has moved over, then sunset the old one, or not.

awesomeusername··on CoCom regulations and GPS receivers for balloons and cubesats
Seems fairly useless to me, for a few dollars I can sample the L1 frequency with a dumb device which has no idea of speed or altitude, and do the calcs with FOSS which is in the wild.

Basically a rule which inconveniences the honest and has zero impact on the bad dudes, whoever they are

awesomeusername··on Asahi Linux 7.1 Progress Report
There is a bit more to it on ARM I'm afraid. The device trees are complex and it feels to me it takes it out of the realm of 'anyone can and should do it'
