awda··on Use RF noise from VGA DAC to drive VHF TV
Fabrice Bellard, what a tease. Lots of awesome engineering work, no source code =(.
awda··on Memories of positive associations get written onto DNA
Interesting that they could also block memory formation in addiction centers. I wonder if there is a preventative treatment possible in that direction, by blocking addiction before it happens? It's a nice dream, anyway.
awda··on Java 6 exploit found in the wild
Ah, very true. Why they make it harder than necessary, I don't know.
awda··on Java 6 exploit found in the wild
If you're talking about the Java windows updater, IME it gives up really easily and then doesn't remember to update until the next patch goes out. Also, aborts if any other installer is running.

OTOH, the Linux openjdk package stays pretty up to date and doesn't install the Ask toolbar ;-).

awda··on Java 6 exploit found in the wild
To get the best of both worlds (in Firefox, but I know Chrome has something similar):

* Go to: about:config

* Search "plugins.click_to_play"

* Enable.

awda··on How many keystrokes do you have left?
I hunt and peck at 80 WPM :-).

Yours, A Happy Pecker

awda··on How many keystrokes do you have left?
Keys left seems to just be standing in as a surrogate for time. Sure, try to use your time valuably. And maybe blogging is a good way to save time by avoiding repeating yourself.

But I'd start with silly consuming-not-creating timesucks like TV, movies, even reading HN ;-). These eat more of my time than email.

awda··on Detained in the US for “Visiting Thailand Too Much”
I don't think TSA workers qualify as middle class. It's not a skilled job, and it doesn't pay particularly well.
awda··on Rejit - prototype of a non-backtracking, just-in-time, SIMD-able regexp compiler
Neat and unexpected result (for me): It seems like v8's re engine is very good (fastest) for "practically long" strings, (anything up to 256 B - 64 kB, depending on expression).

Possibly measurement error, though, considering JS time in milliseconds and the different test methodology for v8 under a certain number of trials, as compared with other engines?

awda··on This site is down because the owner stiffed the web designer
Let's draw a line between businesses and human beings.

Your business SHOULD be thrown out for not paying rent.

Your business SHOULD be fined, dissolved, or bankrupted if it doesn't pay taxes.

A business going bankrupt because they don't pay their debts is not a tragedy.

awda··on Ask HN: Do any netbooks still exist?
Yep, my girlfriend's mother still has one. It's... slower than you'd want, unless you're used to a pentium 4.
awda··on B+ Trees and why I love them, part 1
Please, tell me more.
awda··on “Hand of Thief” Trojan Targets Linux
This includes things that have become commonplace, such as downloading random tarballs off the internet and running "./configure ; make".

Nothing is safe.

awda··on Fifteen Years After Autism Panic, a Plague of Measles Erupts
Here you go: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&c...
awda··on MPAA Demands Source Code of isoHunt’s “Failing” Piracy Filter
The MPAA approaches usenet providers about this quietly in the last year or so. Usenet providers have since voluntarily implemented automatic takedown systems, and the MPAA or other rightsholders have implemented automated takedown submission systems.

As a result, binary usenet is more or less devoid of easily searchable content nowadays. It was only a matter of time.

awda··on The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements
Alas, some of us are lactose intolerant or just don't drink milk. So we supplement with vitamin D pills.
awda··on The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements
Find me 10,000 different vaccines, I'm happy to guinea pig it.
awda··on Rogue employee fired for turning game into Bitcoin mining colony
There's some intent here -- this is clearly intentionally abusive of users' computers, and for his personal profit. Seems pretty clearly malicious.
awda··on Port scanning /0 using insecure embedded devices
As someone who has scanned e.g. all of 24.0/8 from a work machine, you do get angry emails to abuse@<your-reverse-dns-name>. I don't think there are legal issues here -- these are all public services on the internet. But installing software like the author did is legally problematic.
awda··on The purpose of NaN Boxing
Still totally relevant -- x86 misaligned memory accesses hurt.
awda··on MEGA's first week - a retrospective
On my phone, this link just bounces to a "an app for your phone is coming soon" page, zero content. Not the best way to do mobile...
awda··on Bill Gates Gives Away More Money Than The Entire US Foreign Aid Budget
lololololol
awda··on Pro-SOPA Comcast just implemented SOPA-incompatible DNSSEC
And ~10 years later, we still only get 9-10mbit speeds in the city. Hurray, progress!
awda··on What if Insurers Didn't Pay for Crashes Caused by Texting?
This is a bad idea. As the article points out, the point of insurance is to cover this kind of thing.

What insurers should do is steeply jack up rates for first-time crashes when the driver is doing something irresponsible, and make these consequences public knowledge. But this isn't the best idea either -- now people with poor decision making skills get to choose between insurance and {booze, cell phones, ...}, and the party that loses is the person they hit while driving uninsured.

awda··on Infer.NET: A .NET Library for Machine Learning
This library comes as a .msi (Microsoft installer) and a license in .rtf format ("rich text" -- who uses this anymore?). In short, it's what you'd expect from Microsoft: not open source, not open at all, and the license probably limits you to non-commercial use and non-redistribution.
awda··on Microsoft’s “Picture Password”: A Breath Of Fresh Air On The Lock Screen
Yes.
awda··on Go East, Young Man
As far as economic disparity between rich and poor, social liberties, and corruption: China is far, far worse than the US. Maybe some people can find jobs in China teaching English, but you throw away a lot of other things. This article is optimistic at best.
awda··on The New Web Typography
Because part of their company image is that computer internals are an abstract concept, unsuitable for fiddling by mere mortals.
awda··on Hacked memo leaked: Apple, Nokia, RIM supply backdoors for government?
Precisely.
awda··on Hacked memo leaked: Apple, Nokia, RIM supply backdoors for government?
Shocker.
