awat··on If Github ends up selling itself one day, Microsoft will be the buyer (2014)
My understanding is that this is more or less how Gary Vaynerchuk sky-rocketed to the center of media through a similar(ish) comment about Facebook. Best of luck!
awat··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
This, I was trying to think of the right way to state this. Looks like I’ll be looking for alternatives.
awat··on Why Children Aren't Behaving and What We Can Do About It
The part about being “unemployed” to me immediately made me think about the prevalence of future tense pressures for modern kids. I’m in my mid 20s and I went through it.

While my parents had good intentions and many others I’m sure did too. You start building this monster of future pressures about colleges, social media emphasizing what you should like, and lots of other pressures you can’t actually resolve in Elementary or Jr. High but you are made aware of them and focused on them by your surroundings.

Good share this an interesting read.

awat··on How Apple Programmer Sal Soghoian Got Apps Talking to Each Other
Speaking of Sal Soghoian I’ve always loved this little party trick Applescript that sings Happy Birthday. I can’t remember the old Mac site I got it from but I remember him being credited for it.

awat··on Show HN: A Hacker News Reader App with Tabs
Same for me I’ve tried a few apps but always run into a few quirks that steered me back to the site itself. It’s essentially a pinned tab in Safari on my iPhone at this point.
awat··on Judge rules that Amazon isn't liable for damages caused by a hoverboard it sold
That would make sense to me. Not to over simplify the issue but I would settle with Amazon having skin in the game period. They seem to be extremely good at engineering ways to deflect responsibility (financially or ethically).
awat··on A brief introduction to quantum computing
Phrased another way this is a great example of why the breakdown of a cumulative score (verbal vs quant, etc) is important on standardized tests.
awat··on Wage Theft is a Bigger Problem Than Other Forms of Theft (2014)
One of my favorite quotes I’ve mentioned on HN a few times applies here.

It’s only a crime if it occurs on the street level anything above that and it’s called politics.

awat··on Judge rules that Amazon isn't liable for damages caused by a hoverboard it sold
I got a set of counterfeit guitar strings that was fulfilled by Amazon. Ordered them on Amazon purely out of convenance only to realize someone had sent a fake set of $4 strings.

The counterfeit packaging was almost perfect and the strings where metal (just not coated like they should be). I literally don’t even know why you would fake those.

awat··on Apple Looks to Expand Advertising Business with New Network for Apps
If I could like this comment ten times I would. You start stuffing your earnings report with little extra revenues and then all of the sudden you forgot about your original customer while someone else moves in.

Then comes the part where you try to hold your customers captive or ditch any “good company” barriers preventing larger revenue. Interesting with Apple because of thier cash position, this could occur over a long timeline (assuming this is whats happening).

awat··on Judge rules that Amazon isn't liable for damages caused by a hoverboard it sold
That was my first takeaway too. It’s one of the biggie no-no’s in banking to not know the customer. I’m at a loss on why that would be ok here.

I’m also fine with the manufacturer taking the liability but for the retailer to say we don’t know, is at best incompetence and at worst a middle finger to the US consumer.

awat··on The Overprotected American Child
I agree to a certain extent that if replicating an upper middle class lifestyle is the parenting goal this can be successful. The big concern I have with that parenting model is antedoctoally these seem to be the people I have seen fall the hardest when dealing with adversity.

For someone who had a long linear career progression a lay-off or temporary underemployment sucks and could cause a lifestyle downsizing but is manageable. For the person who’s entire existence expects xxx,xxx income that’s where foreclosures on very nice homes and bankruptcy happen.

awat··on The Raspberry Pi 3B+ as an SDR, Without the SDR
Does this mean it would be possible to use Zigbee?
awat··on Lawyers Send Mobile Ads To Phones In ER Waiting Rooms
Neither do I, I don’t want to overstretch but I’ve seen a lot of blowback on GDPR lately and actions like this are what I think will get the US there eventually too.
awat··on Lawyers Send Mobile Ads To Phones In ER Waiting Rooms
This is the type of digestible quip that will get non-tech people to vote for more regulation.

*I’m not advocating for this usage just illustrating a point

awat··on Pwned Passwords in Practice: Real World Examples of Blocking the Worst Passwords
Seems like there are some legitmate reasonings in this thread. I also wonder how much of it is just not wanting to explain making it potentially more difficult for a user to log in.

Sort of like how credit card providers could make things much more secure but choose not to because of fear of reducing transactions.

awat··on America has a truck driver shortage
Agreed, my hope is that it isn't a foreshadow for other industries. Once breaking regs and cheating (whatever that looks like for a given industry) become part of the revenue forecast. It’s pretty hard for market participants to compete without doing those things.
awat··on There Are 101 Americans with Over $1M in Student Loans
No argument on that I should probably just write it with variables.
awat··on There Are 101 Americans with Over $1M in Student Loans
If you owe the bank $10,000 the bank owns you.

If you owe the bank $1,000,000 you own the bank.

Probably not entirely accurate for this situation but I would still love to see the risk calculations for allowing a ~mil in student loans.

It feels like this piece was written under the directive of write about super yachts and they sort of just made it fit.
awat··on The DisplayPort Pin 20 Problem
Interesting, early on with a 4K monitor on a Mac I was having trouble with kernel panics I wonder if this was the cause.
awat··on FBI tells router users to reboot now to kill malware infecting 500k devices
True but it should help since one of the stage 1 C&C’s domain has been seized (by the FBI as you mentioned).

awat··on Google will always do evil
Geniune question is anyone at liberty to comment on Google culture? Google has always been a sort of grass is always greener aspirational employer to me but lately I have to admit externally they don’t look as good.
awat··on Good looking Ubuntu i3 desktop for less than 256MB of RAM
Looks nice, bookmarked.

As a side note focus stealing in OSs has to be one of my biggest pet peeves.

awat··on Mike Meru Has $1M in Student Loans. How Did That Happen?
I don’t disagree at all on the size but I wouldn’t classify it as a mansion just a big house. As a Utahn who works remotely with lots of people from the coasts. I feel its my duty to mention Utah isn’t as cheap as they think it is ha.
awat··on Mike Meru Has $1M in Student Loans. How Did That Happen?
It’s also not a low cost of living state either (not SV but not the midwest). That’s a $400K townhome with shared walls on both sides and a $225 HOA.

Here is a milion dollar detached home in that area: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/934-E-Crosswind-Way-Drape...

awat··on Mike Meru Has $1M in Student Loans. How Did That Happen?
I’m familiar with the suburb that Mr. Meru lives in. Moving 20 minutes in any direction would free up substantial capital for him to pay his debts on a 225K salary (particularly because real estate is red hot in Utah at the moment probably also equity to be had on his 750k+ house).
awat··on GDPR: US news sites unavailable to EU users over data protection rules
On one hand I can understand why some orgs are having trouble with GDPR.

On the other hand it’s pretty clear the actions of more than a few have gotten GDPR to where it is.

My takeaway at the moment is something along the lines of this is why we can’t have nice things.
