awat··on Marriott Concedes 5M Passport Numbers Lost to Hackers Were Not Encrypted
Needs to be substantial penalties for these transgressions or it's just another "cost of doing business".
awat··on 2018 UtahJS Pay, Education, Job-title Survey
Thank you for this, I live in this region and work on the IT side of house. I've been surprised by some employers perception of salary offers in Utah so this is really interesting to see some quantification.
awat··on The Student Loan Debt Crisis Is About to Get Worse
Also to be fair $5,620 appears to be the tuition for LDS church members which likely means it's being subsidized. It looks like it's double for non-LDS students.

awat··on The Student Loan Debt Crisis Is About to Get Worse
I think the nuisance in your point is really important. Particularly when you are talking about 22(ish) year old. They've essentially been fronted the money with no collateral so it's not real for a lot of them yet.
awat··on Rice University Says Middle-Class And Low-Income Students Won't Have To Pay
One thing that I think is sorely missed in these calculations including the FAFSA is length of time the income has been made. There is a huge difference between a family with an 18 year old that has been making 130K+ for the majority of the child's life and the scenario where a parent made it to supervisor after X amount of time with their company putting them to 130K+ in the last year(s). Both look the same in a snapshot.

awat··on The Absurdity of Student Loan Debt
This sounds like a story of someone growing personally to be a contributing member of society.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be beating these people over the head with debt for trying to better themselves.

awat··on List of common misconceptions
I like where you are going with this but I can think of a few that change what seems to be weekly.

As a heavy coffee drinker I’ve learned I reduced my cancer risk and increased it, back and forth for years according to trending studies.

awat··on Not Only Is the Mac Mini Outdated, It's No Longer Mini
Truth and the fact that Apple seems to be one of the diminishing number of manufactures still making/upgrading new tablet models.
awat··on Not Only Is the Mac Mini Outdated, It's No Longer Mini
This is confusing me more and more not your comment but Apple’s position on this. I used to think the Mac Mini was a bit if a cast off because it was really the only Mac for awhile that didnt encourage buying all your periphels from Apple.

That being said with the ending of Airports and Apple branded displays it appears first party accesories arent as important as I thought. I’m not entirely sure why it’s being left to stagnate.

awat··on AT&T Cleared by Judge to Buy Time Warner
This is sadly my experience too. Both my parents are educators and life long learners.

It still floors me how many conversations they had with my younger siblings friends parents (I was present) were it more or less went. Friend parent makes baseless or incorrect assertion my history buff father retorted and they just said well I don’t care anyways.

awat··on Why Do We Care So Much About Privacy?
I’d make the argument that privacy is a neccessary pillar for growth in society. Things like marijuana usage could likely not have become legal had private use not occurred and many people found it to be not harmful. This private space for experimentation and self-evaluation (of products, substances, and norms) isn’t given much attention but could adversely change society if it’s lost imho.
awat··on Everyone complaining about MS buying GitHub needs to offer a better solution
I personally think it’s fair to be catiously optimisitic at best. I for one don’t have the solution but I don’t feel like all the sudden I need to trust Microsoft.

That being said I like the direction they are going in but I’m sure people liked the direction they were going in before thier change of heart towards open source too.

awat··on Art Is Becoming a Financial Product, and Blockchain Is Making It Happen
Good point, I agree on the uniqueness of traditional art being a big factor In it’s ability to be used as an asset.

Watches are pretty common these days at the big auction houses and most if not all have departments specializing in them now. Selling to many buyers who are presumably speculators with little intention to no intention to wear the watch.

awat··on Art Is Becoming a Financial Product, and Blockchain Is Making It Happen
As someone who has loved mechanical watches <insert other qualitative hobbies I’m sure> for years and seen them become a financial product over the last decade or so. I’m not convinced making art a financial product is a net positive.
awat··on The ties between Silicon Valley and the military run deep
I would also say it’s one of the reasons they are getting so much flack at the moment. If the extent of data brokering was crappy mailers I would be far less passionate about the topic.
awat··on When does satire become misinformation?
Here’s a pretty literal example: https://variety.com/2017/biz/news/alec-baldwin-snl-photo-new...

*I don’t know this example is particularly harmful but nonetheless it illustrates things don’t always transfer perfectly

awat··on Mark Shuttleworth on where Canonical and Ubuntu Linux are going next
I have to agree with him on Unity, the reaction to it seemed to outweigh it’s presentation. I gave it a try and liked some aspects but ultimately ended up on Cinnamon.

I realize that’s a totally subjective statement but I was surprised by some of the reactions I heard about it.

awat··on Chatbots were the next big thing: what happened?
Particularly that last point stands out to me. Lots of automations I’ve seen assume the customer knows the problem. Which they may not they are contacting with a symptom to which they may not know the problem. They aren’t necessarily going to say billing issue/expired credit card when contacting about why they can’t access thier premium features on your app anymore.
awat··on Chatbots were the next big thing: what happened?
I agree but really only to a certain extent. Coaxing out of humans what thier actual issue is, is more of an art than a science. IMHO and from antecdotal experience this problem seems easier to automate than I think it really is which is why I don’t personally think anyone is crushing it in this space.

awat··on UPS Has 260,000 Union Workers and They've Just Authorized a Strike
Exactly, the bottles are a clear and understandable symptom (literal, figurative, or somewhere inbetween) not the sickness they are trying to highlight.
awat··on UPS Has 260,000 Union Workers and They've Just Authorized a Strike
Also maybe they dont care. When you make it clear that you aren’t going to share the wealth with your frontline employees. They probably don’t care what your wealth looks like.

I grew up with many union democrats around my father. A lot of them had the opinion this is a multiple million person metro if you won’t spread your gains then die off and someone else will move in.

awat··on If wages are to rise, workers need more bargaining power
This is really the question that throw’s people for loops in my experience. Not contextually what you were addressing but in comparison to my parents in the US.

Many things are much more inexpensive jeans, shoes (functional not trendiest), entry-level tools, computers, media, etc.

Whats not more inexpensive and what imho really actually matters are things like education, housing, and the barrier to entry to careers (require licensing, certfications etc.)

awat··on Does China’s digital police state have echoes in the West?
History doesnt repeat itself but it rhymes.
awat··on How Tolkien created Middle-earth
There is so much to appreciate here. The bit about starting to create an elvish language really stands out to me in painting his passion for this world.
awat··on Power Mac G5 – Technical Specifications (2003)
Totally I had a power mac G5 i was using as a vpn, vnc server, and for some random legacy software up until last year. Eventually replaced it (sold it 10 years later, crazy!) for the poor power efficiency but thats not the machines fault it was rock solid for years and years and probably still would be.
awat··on iOS 12 introduces new features to reduce interruptions and manage Screen Time
I don’t consider myself phone addicted but it could be sobering to see my app usage broken into times instead of battery consumption percentages.
awat··on Apple introduces macOS Mojave
I really have to agree with this. It used to be a selling point for me that Apple gave free OS upgrades (cost baked into hardware I know).

But lately I’m on the fence wether some of this is really a free OS upgrade or really even fully justifies a full point release. Lots a hype for what imho used to be a 10.x.1 to 10.x.4 release.

awat··on If Github ends up selling itself one day, Microsoft will be the buyer (2014)
Absolutely but overnight successes tend to have that moment.
