awa··on Roku says it may lose YouTube TV app after Google made anti-competitive demands
Roku has tie up with TV manufacturers like TCL too. That's where a lot of their growth is coming in.

Personally, I have switched to Fire-Stick and Chromecast with Google TV from Roku because the Roku interface hasn't evolved in the past few years and they are also pushing ads and their own channels now.

awa··on Red Hat Pulls Free Software Foundation Funding over Richard Stallman's Return
He also said: “I think it is morally absurd to define “rape” in a way that depends on minor details such as which country it was in or whether the victim was 18 years old or 17.”

Source: https://selamjie.medium.com/remove-richard-stallman-fec6ec21...

He is defending a 73 year old who had sex with a 17 year old. He doesn't know the 17 yo in the situation, is calling her a part of a harem and saying that it's not "really rape" even though legally it is. All this in a mailing list containing undergrad students who are of that age.

awa··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
I was definitely feeling a burn-out by End of December, the main causes:

1. Kids at home including a 2yo who needed regular attention.

2. Working late nights to get un-disrupted time for work (see 1).

3. Fear of getting a bad performance review (it ended up being not so great anyways).

4. Lack of interactions with co-worker and working odd hours led me to waste quite a bit of time on re-inventing the wheel at work.

5. Seattle freeze/weather didn't help either and a big stretch without vacation.

I took a 2 week break at end of December which coincided with end of our perf review period. Though I didn't get the (perf) rewards I wanted, having it be over gave me a lot of clarity.

I felt we were lucky with flexible and stable jobs and good friends close-by. However, I always had a feeling/pressure that I should be able to do it all (exercise/work/manage kids), and it was hard to balance all the expectations I had of myself leading to stress and an eventual burn-out.

Target with redcard works well for me. FS on a lot of general items else FS on $25/35 for grocery items.
awa··on Microsoft to permanently close its retail stores
I am bummed about this. The Microsoft store near me was a great place to check out the latest windows hardware and what xbox is upto nowadays. I liked that I could just hang out at the store and browse around with no sales pressure.
awa··on Bland God: Notes on Mark Zuckerberg (2018)
Frankly, I would take a machine as an leader over a lot of other options we have. Predictability and lack of emotional outbursts would be great qualities to have in a leader.
awa··on Google bans my events app for referencing Covid-19, or related terms
The why is because, without a lock down app store windows machines were known to be an easy target for viruses, malwares and fake software. Advanced users can still jailbreak and install other apps.

Unfortunately, the vetting process has issues and I think even though the quality will improve over time due to more/better usage of ML/AI techniques but that will make the process more opaque.

Supporting example: WE are making bubble teas with boba at home, takes about 10 mins and they are amazing and much cheaper and convenient than $5-6 that bubble tea places here charge.

Counter example: We basically rarely ordered delivery and preferred take-outs. However, due to the increased delivery usage recently we figured that since delivery costs are similar for a restaurant 5 miles or 15 miles out, we are getting food from restaurants further out than we would normally not go to as they were too much of a drive.

awa··on Chicago will now require food delivery apps to disclose itemized cost breakdown
Most of the food deliveries services are running using VC funds. I don't think there's much scope of profit here for a ~$5-$7/delivery charge having someone someone pickup and deliver a package along with other costs like building/maintaining the system, credit card charges etc,

Frankly, I feel something like peach which bundles multiple orders from a few restaurants is the way to go if you want to make money as a food delivery service.

I think uber investment was also working out for them before the coronavirus hit (they paid $10B for 15% stake) . Apart from that I can think of Alibaba, ARM, Supercell, Flipkart that have been successful.

awa··on Asana files to go public via direct listing
I have tried to use Asana for personal use cases multiple times over the years and it just feels "slow". Unfortunately, wunderlist is going away and I will need to keep hunting for a good alternative.
awa··on You might literally be buying trash on Amazon
Another anecdote, My target.com spend during the holiday season has been +$500 across multiple items since I don't trust amazon for various items now. Also, the customer service is going downhill and I have been pleasantly surprised how much nicer target support is now.
awa··on Nike won’t sell directly to Amazon anymore
Shoprunner tried to be somewhere in that niche, but it kind of has died down after the initial hype, I still see a few sites using it but the big retailers seems to be gone from the program.

I agree, and technically the university can cap the number of students taken this way and try to understand the first and second order effects. (If we take this 1 extra student we might be able to take in 25 extra regular students in 5 years due to the funding)

However, In this case, the spot was for a good student with a solid sailing sports background that was taken.
