the indent! my eyes. this probably can be acceptable in AI age but still :D
aviramha··on On Pausing Containers – how we built, and why we deprecated, our container paus
mirrord is a dev tool for dev environments. One can use it for production but that's not the use case we encourage.
aviramha··on On Pausing Containers – how we built, and why we deprecated, our container paus
The issue is that pausing that way isn't really fixable mostly because of systemd priniciples. One would have to interact with it AFAIK which makes it way more complex, and still there are the usability issues. (I wrote the blogpost)
aviramha··on LTS kernels are no longer supported for 6 years because no one used them
more like 3-5 given people who can manage this kind of code base are of high value.
aviramha··on David Tolnay on the "RustConf Keynote Fiasco"
I'm not sure if by Big Macro we're talking about dtolnay themselves?
aviramha··on GOOD Meat gets green light from FDA for cultivated meat
It's not the input. It's the output. Stock animals emit gasses (like any other animal) and it's non-neglectable footprint.
aviramha··on Docker is deleting Open Source organisations - what you need to know
I am usually an early adopter but I keep coming back to Docker since Podman is still very rough around the edges, especially in terms of "non-direct" usage (aka other tools)
aviramha··on Docker is deleting Open Source organisations - what you need to know
I think that Docker can have a viable business plan but they had terrible execution. At my previous position, I wanted to use DockerHub more heavily but the entire experience was like a bootstrap project someone did as a university assignment. Many advanced features for organizations were lacking (SSO/SAML) that we would have happily paid for.
aviramha··on Twitter was down
I get random random errors and can't really browse (logged in)

Farewell?

mirrord is a tool for backend engineers that enables them to work on a remote environment without needing to deploy there or actually run there. It makes the iteration time (code -> test -> [review] -> deploy) faster since you don't replace the remote service also, which means many devs can work the same time.

You can read more about it here https://metalbear.co/blog/mirrord-3.0-is-out/

But I don't want that. That's like taking the gate instead of adding a configurable ACL.

Most odds is when x64 binary will stop shipping, arm64e won't be in preview mode anymore and we will be able to just do the re-signing part. (Which is supported)

Why not enable easier override for specific scenarios? Turning off completely feels like a bad outcome

You could patch a shell binary, but you'd ultimately want to use other binaries as well. The most common example we had is when people tried to run our software with `pyenv` which was a shell script that used other system binaries + shell scripts

I totally feel you though I can understand that for Apple the average consumer's security > hackers :) I think Apple should remember that people debugging and working is important too, and make the documentation around the security features less obscure. (Attaching a debugger/ptrace on macOS is really evil to implement)

Hey! One of the authors here, thanks for posting our post. Available for any questions and feedback.

It's not one of the biggest and it's owned by one individual, so they can ban who they want. from the about: "hello this is my 'general purpose' instance, hosted in europe. i made it in 2017 to have a good and stable space for myself in the fediverse, and welcome everyone who felt safer here. a feminist, anarchist, communist, cyberpunk culture and many trans and queer people, often with tech or scientific interests."
aviramha··on Ask HN: What Is a COO?
I think a classic super-star COO example would be Sheryl Sandberg, who was COO of Facebook/Meta. She was practically running the company. Zuckerberg mainly focused on strategy, vision while she made Facebook a well oiled profit machine.
aviramha··on Show HN: We’ve created a tool to focus on coding and collaborate with your team
Love it! Can't wait for fork workflow to be supported.
aviramha··on Ask HN: Task management for open source companies
Just tried it out, it looks very nice but the problem is that it forces you to manage everything there, i.e no back-sync to GitHub.
aviramha··on Mirrord 3.0 – Mirror a pod's network traffic and file system accesses locally
Thanks for posting mirrord! One of the creators here, feel free to ask anything.
aviramha··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
People are different. Some like remote more than office, some other way around.

Having said that, as someone who really enjoyed the startup scene + offices (in Tel Aviv) I now enjoy a lot more my work being remote. I feel I have enough social circles I need to maintain as of now, and I don't need more people to have deep connections with. I can now be effective at my work, while spending the extra time I have with the existing connections (family, close friends) instead of commuting, going to an office which binds me to new social circles which can be awesome, but it means less time for existing ones.

aviramha··on Prusti: Static Analyzer for Rust
Static analyzers are free CR in most cases. I highly recommend using it, and do know that in some companies people are unaware of those unfortunately..
aviramha··on Ask HN: Where to get real-world cyber security experience?
It really depends on what job you're looking for. Most of the security industry is mostly compliance and having certificates/awareness. If you want to amplify yourself as a hacker, I'd recommend CTFs, reversing and researching public samples, reversing proprietary protocols, finding exploits, contributing to cyber security projects such as fuzzers/pentest tools.
aviramha··on Ask HN: Explaining many short tenures due to poor mental health
I would try and offer my services as a contractor - this way the employer takes less risks and reduces the cost of employing while giving you more flexibility in terms of work hours/style. Given you’ll manage well there’s no reason to take you in as a full time employee later on.. but if that’s the goal then I’d be clear with the employer.

I'm pretty sure that frida takes care of it (we haven't seen such scenario in the wild where the hooks fail..)
aviramha··on 10 Years of Git: An Interview with Git Creator Linus Torvalds (2015)
I think the coolest part is how BitMover (BitKeeper's company) decision to not open source or provide licenses for open source actually killed it as a product.
aviramha··on Ask HN: What was your first open source contribution?
Here's mine from 2013:

I was 13 years old and the comment was very evil, though you can probably see that didn't really affect me :)

aviramha··on Hooking Go from Rust
Fair point.
