autopov··on Drone hits British Airways plane approaching Heathrow Airport

autopov··on Spotify raises $1B in debt with devilish terms to fight Apple Music
These terms remind me of penny stock toxic financing schemes.

I look forward to the inevitable pump and dump around IPO time.

Doesn't MacID already do this with Proximity Wake?

autopov··on How much water does California have? California Reservoir Levels
Reservoirs are but one source of California's water. Groundwater is another. Whether recent rain has had time to percolate and recharge aquifers instead of running off remains to be seen.
autopov··on Wikipedia founder calls alt-medicine practitioners “lunatic charlatans”

autopov··on Project West Ford
Since Mythbusters proved that finding a needle in a haystack isn't that difficult, I propose that the term be changed to "finding a needle in the ionosphere." [Not applicable to orbital debris trackers...]
autopov··on What would the Apple Car look like?
I see you're not familiar with Federal Code Title 49 Subtitle B Chapter V Part 571. In layman's terms that's Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards which regulate among other vehicle specifications the type, location, and angle of projection of headlamps, taillights, and especially High Mounted Stop Lights (the center brake lights on vehicles).

Personally I hope Ive models it after the Jaguar E-Type, making it beautiful within the bounds of federal restrictions and regulations, of course.

autopov··on Vacuum-maker Dyson is reportedly working on an electric car
Will its propulsion system involve sucking and blowing air over a "special" airfoil to increase the air's velocity?
autopov··on Startups that demoed at Y Combinator W16 Demo Day 2
I agree wholeheartedly. It seems this device just creates more points of failure (e.g. lost/dead phone, urinary tract infections, interference, etc.) for a little convenience.

Self-cathing isn't that difficult once you get the hang of it.

autopov··on Nixon advisor: We created the war on drugs to “criminalize” black people and
HR Haldeman wasn't incredibly angry. I knew him and his family. One anecdote is that around 1990 Nixon was in Santa Barbara. Bob knew when Dick's motorcade would be passing by and walked to the end of his driveway and waved to Nixon as he passed. Time heals most wounds.

Bob did the prison time and Jo started a career to support the family. I've read Jo's unpublished autobiography. The saga was difficult for them—especially Peter, the youngest son—but they paid their dues and moved on.

autopov··on Winter is coming
Wow! This is so badly written (spelling, grammar, logic)...
autopov··on Startups that demoed at Y Combinator W16 Demo Day 2
Well it is TechCrunch (where it's and its are seemingly interchangeable).
autopov··on Will We Glue Skyscrapers Together in the Future?
In California, building codes are tightly integrated with fire code. For example, residential roofs cannot be entirely covered with solar panels because a firefighter may have to punch a hole in the roof to vent a fire.

Has anyone ever witnessed a glue lam beam burn? How would glue fasteners in a skyscraper perform in a fire? The relevant industry needs to conduct studies and show proof that it's safe.

Safety is a big bandwagon in the CA Leg., so plenty of good data would be needed to push innovation into building codes.

Based on my knowledge of how the CA State Fire Marshal works, it'll be 2040 or later for glue welds make it into CA building codes, if the tech proves to be viable.

autopov··on Optimizely (YC W10) lays off 10%
Was this created using a new-age corporate bs buzzword generator? "Optinaut"? COOD (Control Our Own Destiny)? Oooh, better trademark that genius mantra!

How about sharing with the world how you've personally written letters of recommendation for each one or how much severance you're paying these 40 employees who were sooo vital to your, ahem, journey? Because if I was one of the laid off, this public "I'm not a bad guy—honest—it's not their fault" means nothing and helps no one.

autopov··on Online Finance Draws on Geographical Data, Raising Questions
Hmm, the old search-and-click-article-through-Google-News trick isn't working.

How about a summary, OP?

autopov··on Inside Medium
The Internet was pretty civil before the riff-raff got easy access. USENET was fun, informative, and most groups had more than a modicum of civility.

Any site that monetizes with advertorials is uncivil; and any online forum can foster civility by having and strictly enforcing a code of conduct.

What's Medium's USP?

autopov··on Wuppertal Suspension Railway
I made a side trip to Wuppertal when I visited Köln because I'm a monorail enthusiast.

The system was amazing for its time and its safety per passenger-distance is quite good for rail.

It was full of schoolchildren heading home at a leisurely pace, suspended over the river.

I had forgotten that you have to disembark at the end station so that the cars can be manually pushed onto outbound rail. I got some puzzled looks when I didn't de-train right away.

autopov··on Windows XP Firefox Users
>Data says[sic]: Windows XP Firefox users are much more likely to have 0 addons installed than the Firefox users in general

This sounds like the Tor browser . . . If this is the case, his geodata correlations are suspect.

autopov··on Mosul dam engineers warn it could fail at any time, killing 1M people
For more context, at just over 11 cubic km it's roughly twice as large as Shasta Lake[0]—California's largest reservoir.

autopov··on What I’ve learned so far from living in a Mars simulation dome
The psychological challenges are interesting.

Psychiatrists and psychologists often need to vent to a peer to deal with being the person who counsels others.

I imagine or hope that some cross training is performed in the sMARS mission so that one person who is incapacitated doesn't create a cascade of other problems (e.g., the French biologist can't attend to the life-sustaining Cyanobacteria).

A crew member suffering a mental breakdown could doom the mission. Is her medical kit stocked with sedatives? Does increased radiation exposure alter brain structure?

So many risks that we know of and some that we don't.

autopov··on Ask HN: What would happen if Apple removed Uber from its App Store?
Users can request rides via Uber's website.

I believe users requesting (and getting) rides is Uber's primary revenue generator, so not having the App Store access would be inconvenient but not catastrophic.

autopov··on VC Vinod Khosla trys to sell Martins Beach easement to state for $30M
I was quite young and I still remember the wide expanse of beach with nearly vertical cliff walls.

I'm not fully up to date on California Coastal Regulations, but generally public access to beaches is an important public right. The state will not back down from this either I suspect.
