aurbano··on Emerging JavaScript pattern: multiple return values
While the article does advocate for objects vs arrays for returning multiple values I wanted to address the second part of you comment.

It will work just fine in TypeScript, where you can define a "fixed size" array as a type:

    type Test = [number, string];
    const test: Test = [1, 'something'];
The second line will fail compilation if there's a different number of elements in that array, or if the types don't match.

Should be definitely doable and fairly easy afaik.

Quick google search also reveals a few libraries [0] that should help.

aurbano··on Shapez.io: open-source base building game inspired by Factorio
Bought the full version and played it for a good few hours - lovely game!

After a while it did feel slightly too similar to work though (programming), as once you unlock copy pasting of structures it's really all about optimising. Still some good fun, and definitely worth the price :)

aurbano··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
I think the main point against analogies is when they are used as proof for the situation they are being compared to.

I'm not versed in formal logic, but I believe it would be:

"A -> B", and I want to prove that "C -> D"

So I make the analogy that "A is similar to C, and B to D in some ways" thus then C -> D"

A lot of people will take this as a valid proof. But it has yet to be proven that A and C, and B and D are actually interchangeable.

Edit: To refer this back to the original argument, saying that the AppStore is like a brick and mortar store, and Cheerios is like Epic games is a nice analogy, but it can't possibly prove anything because they are just not the same thing.

What they may do though, is potentially align the reader's point of view with the writer's, but not necessarily towards the _right_ point of view, assuming there is one.

aurbano··on How I operated as a staff engineer at Heroku
After recently joining a new company this was one of my big contributions, I went through the whole codebase and removed legacy/unused code, or merged code that was slightly different into a more general version.

Spent a good 2 weeks on this but the result was around 120 files changed and over 4000 lines removed, it felt great! And it was also an amazing opportunity to understand the codebase and ask the right questions to other team members when figuring out what was outdated and what wasn't.

aurbano··on Show HN: AI color palette generator for Tailwindcss
Fully agree with this, I think having color variables like blue-500, orange-100 is completely counter-productive.

What's the point of color variables, if they just describe the color they are... We already have color names for that.

aurbano··on Ask HN: Are you friends with your manager?
I think you’ve nailed it.

It’s something that’s possible, but very difficult and it requires a lot of additional work to keep it going and progress the friendship.

aurbano··on The Languages Which Almost Became CSS
Wasn't that what flash/shockwave and similar stacks did back then?

I fully agree, having the web _describe_ what it wants, and the browser render it makes it so much more accessible at least.

aurbano··on Break Up Google
Fwiw Twitch is now owned by Amazon, not sure if it was/is profitable though - but it may be that the cost of such massive video platforms is too high to run without a parent company that can subsidise the costs.

In the case of Google/Amazon this makes additional sense because they own the cloud infrastructure, which I assume is the biggest cost of the platforms.

aurbano··on What Comes After Zoom?
Is there a way to have good async group video chat?

I haven't given this much thought but maybe this is an interesting direction to explore?

aurbano··on What Comes After Zoom?
This could be it, but current headsets are not that comfy after too much use, and if you don't have AC at home (tons of EU homes won't have them) they can be a nightmare in the summer...

In a way I like the approach, and I guess I’d have to try it to actually fet a feel for it because it seems to introduce a ton of additional work figuring out sane ways to split the code in branches...

Although it has a great side effect of forcing atomic commits.

aurbano··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Work in progress, but a couple of friends and me are making an online chat for small groups of people - just a quick place to have a random conversation, although if you come back we try to put you back with the same people if available

Online but still under development: https://dotdot.im :)

aurbano··on I was tricked into thinking I had “grit”
Maybe it's just the wording we use, but when you say "But in my life philosophy, it's not so much important to be happy, as to be a good person and to have a fulfilling life."

Doesn't that mean that being a good person and having a fulfilling life is what makes _you_ happy?

This is something I think a lot about, and I know this is a philosophical topic that has been around for ever, but how do we call the state in which we're "ok" with our life? In your case the mental state when you believe that you're being a good person and having a fulfilling life? Is that happiness? Or is happiness a by-product of that state?

I believe this is what Aristotle called achieving virtue, maybe, it's been a while since I studied philosophy...

aurbano··on When Tailwinds Vanish
Aside from the other great points that have been made already in other top comments, I have a little nitpick (or feedback for the author, if they're a reader): charts should have axis labels, units, and ticks. Otherwise you might as well not have them.

Take the second chart on the page for example, as soon as I saw it a little warning light turned on in my mind. That chart says incremental spend (y axis) vs time (x axis), but no values or ticks on either axis. A chart like this could literally mean _anything_ because you have no idea of the rate at which those lines are getting smaller. You have no idea how much more revenue to startups there is compared to incumbents, the difference that _looks_ big in the chart could even be 0.001%, just "zoomed in".

aurbano··on A theory of Zoom fatigue
Could very well be, she had a very basic plan (around 10Mbps), while I had a fiber plan on 200Mbps so maybe that was the issue. I can't recall how it was with other people though.
aurbano··on A theory of Zoom fatigue
Just a little anecdote that’s relevant here. Around 10 years ago my girlfriend didn’t have wifi home yet (low tech family), so we spoke at night over landline, as those calls were free. And it definitely did feel like what some people here are saying: you could hear everything with no delay or cuts at all, the whole call just felt like she was there next to me.

They eventually setup wifi in their home, so we switched to VoIp calls, mainly so we wouldn’t block our families’ landlines for a couple hours every day. And the quality was so much worse...

The delay sometimes would be so bad that we had this technique where one would slowly count down from 3 and then say “Now”! Then when the other heard Now they’d say Now too, and the first person could essentially count the seconds. This way we could “slow down” our conversation to accomodate for the multi-second delay, which (thinking back) was like our own protocol for dealing with signal delay!

aurbano··on A Guide to Pricing Plans
I'll try to give some subjective constructive criticisim.

Honestly, it feels "clickbaity". I guess it's due to the topics typically being found in content aggregating websites, or the question format.

Take for example the top post right now on HN: "It's Time to Build" by Marc Andreessen - it would've been a completely different vibe if he called it "What are the Top Countries in the World Not Doing Right?" or something like that.

aurbano··on 1.1.1.1 for Families

aurbano··on Zoom’s Use of Facebook’s SDK in iOS Client
What if mobile platforms (iOS, Android... ) changed the security/privacy policy so that apps had to request the “network access” permission, either whitelisting domains they want to talk to, or askingfor wildcard access?

Most apps shouldn’t need wildcard access, and the mobile device could include a warning when an app does this teaching users that they should be careful with the app.

This way at least when you installed Zoom for example, it would say something like:

“Zoom is requesting network access to:

- zoom.us - analytics.tracker.example.com - facebook.com “

And then at everyone would know. It still doesn’t solve the underlaying problem, but it would probably make companies more reluctant to add third party analytics and sdks.
