atorodius··on If math is more than proof, we need to better celebrate the rest of it
The whole math and AI debate irks me. I am thinking the same can be said about art. „if art is more than the image …“. But when we debate image generation we dismiss this. So it is different when it is closer to home? Hypocritical IMO
atorodius··on AlphaGenome Atlas: a high-resolution map of human DNA
> a database that predicts the effects of every possible single nucleotide variant in the human genome. We used the AlphaGenome AI model to pre-calculate the regulatory impact of all 9 billion single-letter genetic changes, resulting in a massive, 1-petabyte dataset.

This is for a database, no? While Borzoi is a model?

> Here, we introduce Borzoi, a model that learns to predict cell-type-specific and tissue-specific RNA-seq coverage from DNA sequence.

I don’t understand why tarot reading apps are banned, can someone enlighten me?

I use this a lot on my MacBook Air when working in cabs. It’s beautiful and works well for me

WDYM it is free? You hit rate limits after anout 10 messages

(side note I like that they rate limit messages and not tokens. at least it does not just stop mid reply)

atorodius··on A Gopher Meets a Crab
That's a terrible analogy:)

It is more like you wanting to build a bed out of wood so you hire a carpenter and watch them and ask questions about every step and maybe help a bit at the end.

I find it amazing to learn new programming things

atorodius··on Show HN: Moltbook – A social network for moltbots (clawdbots) to hang out
A website for a meetup I host including a store. It was a 30min thing and amazing. A web app to track my contact lens usage. An android app for my gym routine. A web app to try drum patterns

> Nobody is building anything worthwhile with these things.

Do you mean AI or these "personal agents"? I would disagree on the former, folks build lots of worthwile things

atorodius··on Predicting OpenAI's ad strategy
> Google realized this a long time ago; there is no ad-free paid version of Google Search.

well there is also no 200$/month Google Search subscription

where do you see it is a coworking space? looks to me like a normal office building

either way it is a physical address, I was just responding to the invalid claim above

atorodius··on Times New American: A Tale of Two Fonts
Tangential but did not see it mentioned: Calibri must have been the Microsoft Word default at some point, at least in some parts of the world, because seeing it makes me think this is a Word document by a person that did not change the default font.

atorodius··on The power of two random choices (2012)
neat trick indeed. would be cool to do the math and get an analytical formula of mean queue time given cache refresh for a given k, under some mild assumptions.
atorodius··on The War on the Walkman
> Some said it was a sign of a continued rise of Reagan and Thatcher style individualism. Cultural critic Allan Bloom deemed the Walkman "a nonstop... masturbational fantasy” in his 1987 book ‘The Closing of the American Mind.’ Neo-Luddite John Zerzan saw the Walkman as part of a modern trend that encouraged a "protective sort of withdrawal from social connections" and Thomas Lipscomb, chief of the Center for the Digital Future, equated it with the euphoric drug "soma," from Huxley's Brave New World, creating, as he put it, "an airtight bubble of sound" that was nothing but a "sensory depressant." In other words it all felt ‘a bit blackmirror’ as one might say today. (A collection of quotes collected in this 1999 Reason Magazine article)

not sure about the masturbational fantasy but the rest seems fairly spot on as a critique?

atorodius··on I'd like to take a moment to speak to you about the Adobe PSD format (2009)
Reading obj c brought back some good memories of when I coded iPhone apps around 2009. Great language

On topic: parsing others file formats has to be one of the most fun and most terrible things. The bliss when it ends up working is great

Is this using t SNE? Or sth else? I have a feeling similarity is not well defined in whatever space this is using. t SNE is famously unsuited to plot how "close" two points are. it is for clustering

atorodius··on Issues with Color Spaces and Perceptual Brightness
I stumbled upon this when visualizing music. It is very interesting how everything is kind of non linear, like you mention. I had to increase low frequencies and then I got stuck trying to bucket frequencies. It seems humans have different fidelity for different ranges of frequencies

As someone who did a PhD ending 4y ago and joined a industry research lab, I can relate to this a lot, I think this is very much spot on

> a lot of these PhD’s hired back then were therefore asked to and free to do research; that is, they chose what they want to work on and they publish what they want to publish. it was just like an academic research position however with 2-5x better compensation as well as external visibility and without teaching duties,

exactly!

> such process standardization is however antithetical to scientific research. we do not need a constant and frequent stream of creative and disruptive innovations but incremental and stable improvements based on standardized processes.

A lot of the early wave AI folks struggle with this. They wanna keep pushing wild research ideas but the industry needs slow incremental stuff, focused on serving
