atomicUpdate··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
Meta is. That’s very clearly stated in the article and literally no one is disputing that fact.
atomicUpdate··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
> Yeah... as a US citizen and taxpayer I think I'd like that $4 billion back.

It was never yours in the first place. It was their money they kept, not money given to them by the government. I don’t know why this distinction is so difficult for people.

atomicUpdate··on RISC-V: They Should Have Known Better
It’s kind of funny that all of the complaints about optionality apply equally to Vulkan. Google even created the same profile solution with “Android Vulkan Profiles (AVP)”.

I suspect Vulkan suffers from the same design by committee problem, which similarly caused it to miss seemingly basic features in the base spec that then need to be filled in with extensions and also made it too difficult for developers to want to move too.

atomicUpdate··on Firefox 153 available with support for Vulkan video decoding, JPEG-XL
Considering Intel has vulkan video disabled in Mesa for recent chips, I’m guessing very little.

atomicUpdate··on The Voice of Google
It was sanctioned by the CEO. How much was their job actually at risk?
atomicUpdate··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
Apparently they live in a nursing home in 2020 still, because no one else is dying of covid anymore. Especially not young or healthy people within the last few years.
atomicUpdate··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
> They’d even distrust “stand further apart” if the wrong person said it.

They shouldn’t believe it no matter who says it. The entire concept of “social distancing” was completely made up and had no science behind it. It belongs in the same bucket of nonsense as “mask up between bites.”

atomicUpdate··on EU to crack down on TikTok, Instagram's 'addictive design' targeting kids
Enforcing a healthy diet and exercise would have a vastly larger impact than any seatbelt laws in terms of reducing health care costs. Seatbelts and smoking always seem to be about as far as the advocates are willing to go though.
atomicUpdate··on Florida judge rules red light camera tickets are unconstitutional
What is a speed light camera?
atomicUpdate··on Agentic Engineering Patterns
> When code is expensive to produce and is likely to stay in production for many years it's obviously important to review it very carefully. If code is cheap and can be inexpensively replaced maybe we can lower our review standards?

I don't care how cheap it is to replace the incorrect code when it's modifying my bank account or keeping my lights on.

atomicUpdate··on I found a useful Git one liner buried in leaked CIA developer docs
This is the same thing as `git rebase-update`, available in Chrome's `depot_tools`, which deletes merged branches.

Beyond that, this is just OP learning how `xargs` works.

atomicUpdate··on Defeating a 40-year-old copy protection dongle
If my car’s brakes have a design flaw and don’t stop my car reliably, I don’t expect to have to keep paying for my car to get them fixed. The manufacturer’s warranty covers that, and bugs in your software fall into the same bucket.
atomicUpdate··on The tech monoculture is finally breaking
> Their standards forever dropping

And yet their standards still haven’t dropped low enough for Linux to be an acceptable replacement. I don’t think that’s a knock on the Windows user, but an indication that Linux desktop (and its replacement applications) still isn’t user-friendly enough for most people.

atomicUpdate··on Graphite is joining Cursor
I expect the formatter/linter to be run as part of presubmit and/or committing the code so it doesn't matter how it's edited and saved by the developer. It's strange to hear of a specific IDE being mandated to work around that, and making quick edits with tools like vi unsupported.
atomicUpdate··on Sayonara, R35: Nissan Japan has stopped taking orders for the GT-R
No one has ever cross-shopped an S2k and an FF.
atomicUpdate··on California's most neglected group of students: the gifted ones
My first thought is using your union representative to amplify your voice. Presumably the union doesn't want to be associated with, or known to be representing, racists so it's in their best interests to denounce these types of statements.
atomicUpdate··on California's most neglected group of students: the gifted ones
> There’s little doubt that racism played a role in identifying children as gifted even though the label was based on supposedly objective criteria.

Why has the LA Times settled on racist teachers as the only reason for the skew in enrollment numbers, and why aren’t teachers upset the LA Times are calling them racists?

I’m constantly surprised how often accusations like this are thrown around and how little pushback there is by those accused of it.

atomicUpdate··on Show HN: Bluetooth USB Peripheral Relay – Bridge Bluetooth Devices to USB
The reasoning I’ve heard is that Bluetooth traffic is easily snoopable without physical access to the device. Someone could potentially steal password keystrokes while sitting outside the office building, on the other side of a window with the shades drawn, whereas with USB you still need to get past the physical security and be at their desk.
atomicUpdate··on The Rise and Fall of Matchbox's Toy-Car Empire
> Good heavens. How were we meant to know that?

It’s literally referenced in the comment that poster is replying to. It would have been less work to just pay attention.

atomicUpdate··on 12 Months of Mandarin
> The ability to focus on some things but not others is perfectly consistent with ADHD.

This is an insanely broad definition that literally the entire population would fall under.

> You might find it easy but that doesn't mean others will.

No one finds concentrating on any and every subject easy. Assuming this is due to ADHD, and not something in their control, is a cop out.

atomicUpdate··on Show HN: Open Scanner, an open-source document scanning app for iPhone
Sublime does it, at least with Merge.

It’s weird to think Linux programs would somehow be different from Windows in this regard. Why would a program running in Linux are more altruistic (for lack of a better term) than one running in Windows?

atomicUpdate··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
Both of the examples in the quote give you the answer: talk to someone that’s actually done it.

It’s always amazing to me how often the person 3 desks over has already solved the same problem, but is never asked how by the next person. Instead, too many people act like they’re the first person to ever attempt whatever they’re working on.

atomicUpdate··on Public Work: a search engine for public domain images
Are you asking or telling?
atomicUpdate··on TwitchAdSolutions – Blocking Twitch Ads
> Why am I expected to pay another $10 to block ads.

You aren't.

Twitch Turbo costs $12/month. If you're spending more than that on multiple subscriptions then you're better off getting Twitch Turbo and not getting ads on any stream, rather than just those you subscribe to.

atomicUpdate··on The U.S. government may finally mandate safer table saws
I tend to agree, assuming there are no false positives. Admittedly, I’m not sure how often that occurs, nor if we even can know that based on all the various work environments the cheap table saws are being used in today.
atomicUpdate··on Mario meets Pareto
> the animation and the scroll-sensitive layout (vs. just having a series of static diagrams) makes it unpleasant for me to read.

I totally agree; I don't understand the fascination HN has with these types of sites. It all feels like extraneous design just for the sake of it, rather than actually making anything easier or better to understand.

atomicUpdate··on Commission opens non-compliance investigations against Alphabet, Apple and Meta
They're literally working on a feature to disable third party coookies by default:

https://blog.google/products/chrome/privacy-sandbox-tracking...

How does that fit in with your conspiracy theorizing?

atomicUpdate··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
> Simples being you need to log in to multiple different apps, but things like data moving between them etc are also complications.

I don't think this is actually true. Specifically, once I've logged into one Google app (like Gmail), others automatically pick up the user (like Calendar), so it seems to at least be technically possible.

atomicUpdate··on Oh shit, my app is successful and I didn't think about accessibility
> "See here, it says that only 10% of customer devices are on OS version 10.1 and below. We must bump our minimum version to 10.2 because us developers are tired of supporting this old shit and legacy code paths!"

This makes sense if that 10% are costing more money than they generate, which seems especially likely since people that are frugal enough to (for example) hang onto an iPhone 7 are also unlikely to spend much on other frivolous purchases.

Supporting those older devices can range from supporting multiple code paths due to different APIs, or fallbacks for missing HW performance and/or features. All of that adds up in terms of developer time, build/infra cost, etc.

atomicUpdate··on Money bubble
> My own anecdotal experience is that dozens of non-tech friends, coworkers, etc. tell me that they are using ChatGPT every day. These are people who are telling me how they use it to draft emails, create marketing material, create sales support material, create education material, etc.

My reaction when I hear this is that those people are being paid entirely too much money if an LLM can do their job. I think this is where the real economic impact will come from: when managers realize it's just LLMs generating emails to be summarized by LLMs and it's just bots spamming each other with busy work all day. At some point companies will realize it's all pointless and start trimming these pointless jobs, leaving a lot of people without any actual skills.
