Yev here -> if you don't want to use the UI (meant for non-tech savvy folks) we do have advanced exclusions via XML - take a look -> https://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/articles/220973007-Advan....
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> it may be that something "ate" the auto-update process, could be A/V, a Firewall, or a break in the connection. He can grab the latest build from here -> files.backblaze.com and support can walk him through the process (live chat from 9am-12PM and 1PM-5PM Pacific). Edit -> support (https://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/requests/new)

Yev here -> Have you reached out to support about the issue? They are working with our devs to track all of the issues and could use the additional data points -> https://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. It's working for most users, so we're trying to whittle down the issue.

Yev here -> yes, under our ToS you need to be a customer in good standing in order for us to provide service. We do want to see your computer ping home every now and again to make sure its running up-to-date and supported versions. The Computer Backup service is a backup, not an archive. If you need to put your data somewhere and have it be there forever until YOU remove it, we recommend our B2 Cloud Storage service which has a ton of integrations that make backing up easy -> https://www.backblaze.com/b2/integrations.html?use-case=back... (I filtered by "backup" to make it easier to see all of the integrators).
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> the backup service is client-side encrypted before transmission.
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> we're actually working on an EU version of that site as well so you'd be able to toggle!
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yes, unfortunately the re-upload will take some time, but hopefully you can increase threading and get the data uploaded quickly. Understand it's not ideal, but hopefully there's not too much of a time gap between backups.
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> You're saying that when you moved data over without it changing, the data was re-uploaded? It should deduplicate as long as there's been no changes. If you do see that behavior, please ping support so they can investigate -> https://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> confirmed with the devs that the typo you're seeing doesn't affect the inherit - it's a different process. But we'll fix the typo :D
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Thanks - you should be getting an update soon!
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> I'll do support wherever I see my bat-signal :D Do you have an alternate method set? If you reach out to support -> https://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/requests/new (they have live chat right now) - they can try an alternate method if our primary provider isn't reaching your device!
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Just spoke with support you'll be getting an update soon (part of the delay is every time it gets updated by the requester it automatically gets moved to the bottom of the queue due to the way they are ordered - it's a weird quirk).

Support should give you more details but it is indeed the case that some of the logs we have aren't tied to every process - so the transmit logs are paramount for debugging inherit backup state issues, but other log files wouldn't be. That said, we should totally fix the typo in the other log files, I've let the devs know about that!

atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> I'm reading! If you're able, please send me the ticket number so that I can review that exchange and escalate it. I'm sorry that support didn't appear grateful for your debugging efforts, but I'll make sure that it gets in front of the developers who can examine the issue.

I would update to v7.0 - it does have a lot of minor fixes in there as well (not sure if inherit is addressed, but worth trying).

This speedtest is somewhat accurate and is pointed to our data center so should give you a decent idea of speed -> https://www.backblaze.com/speedtest/. The reason latency is a factor is that it affects how quickly data leaves your computer and gets to our data center, so if you're far away, it can play a factor!
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> No NAS support in this release. That part has not changed, however if you have external hard drives that you are backing up, this extended Version History does affect those! Sorry for the confusion.
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> No plans on the Computer Backup side. We haven't been able to come up with a way to do it affordably and in a way that makes sense for us - so we recommend folks use B2 Cloud Storage and any of the integrations that work for both. Cloudberry and Comet backup work pretty well. You can see more on: https://www.backblaze.com/b2/integrations.html?platform=linu... (I set it to use Linux + Backup as the parameters).
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> Thank you so much! :D
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> try it now. We've spent the last few updates honing in the way we handle uploads and have introduce threading to make the process more efficient. We'll always be bottle-necked by the available bandwidth to your machine and latency, but it's worth trying again if you haven't for a while!
atYevP··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
Yev here -> Glad you're enjoying the Duplicati integration with B2! It did take us a while, but we wanted to make sure that we did it the right way and in a sustainable fashion. It's been an ongoing project for the past 10 months or so - and came after a lot of customer demand following CrashPlan leaving the consumer market. We're hoping people dig it, apologies it took so long!

Hah! That's a good thing! As for VC vs. Bootstrap - our five founders all worked together previously at a company that raised VC funds and while they weren't made millionaires from that company, it did give them enough cushion to go without salary for a bit. Originally it wasn't supposed to be 2 years though, so when it started to drag out there were definitely some...uncomfortable times, but they pulled through them. That's not say that we HATE the VC model - it definitely works for a lot of companies out here, but there is something nice about being able to choose your own adventure.

Re: Dropbox as a competitor -> You hit it, they kind of are, but I think that's mostly because people don't really know enough about how things work to tell the difference. Part of what I do with the Backblaze consumer service is a lot of education on why you should use both :)

Yev here -> yes, we have one VC backer from 2012. We wrote a post about it that sheds a bit of light on why (Thailand flooding played a major role): https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-raises-5-million-wh.... TL/DR we have a capital-heavy business and the $2.5m cash infusion helped us weather hard drive prices going up 3x overnight.
atYevP··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Yev here -> Ah, that's a very good question. Staying in business > being hip in most cases ;-) The nice thing about being bootstrapped is that we don't have that many investors, and they're chill with just seeing how this goes. We actually do have on "traditional VC" that invested, but they are very relaxed about the whole thing and don't have a board seat, just an observer role - so they're like, if you eventually are profitable enough, just pay us back at some multiplayer and we're good - otherwise we'll wait for an exit. Nice folks! :D
atYevP··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Yev here -> very true, but for a backup those should only occur once and there's a free amount per day. The nice thing about our integration partners like Cloudberry is that they go through qualification and we help them develop so if their apps start to go haywire it's usually caught quickly and fixed rapidly. It's been pretty rare for the transaction calls to go haywire.

Another thing you can do to protect yourself if that's a big worry is by placing a Cap or an Alert for a transaction type. That way with an alert we'll notify you when you're nearing that cap so you'll have forewarning instead of just being charged (or if you set the cap, we'll stop until it's been lifted or reset).

atYevP··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Yev here -> things have changed! For 1TB of data on B2 the cost of the service is actually LESS expensive for B2 than the computer backup ($6/month unlimited). B2 is priced at $5/TB/Mo - so that price has stayed the same. We also just opened a data center in Amsterdam - so you can create an account in the EU and your data will be stored there! Not sure if that helps, but figured I'd let you know!
atYevP··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Yev here -> it does absolutely move money "up" - but as a company (at least if you're disciplined) it doesn't mean you get to use it. You're basically deferring revenue (the amount lost from not increasing prices on existing customers for X amount of time) and the money you bring up is for a service you still have to provide, so for accounting purposes it's more or less "locked down". So you're absolutely right, it does bring money forward, but there's costs involved as well!
atYevP··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Yev here -> while the numbers aren't entirely correct in our case the equation is correct. We do account for engineering time and opportunity cost of other projects that aren't getting worked on (though we tend to stack projects so while one team works on, billing, another will work on UI, when billing team is done they'll move on to the next project, etc..). One of the side-benefits for us in this case was building out the Extensions program meant we had to build a more robust crediting system, which is code we might be able to re-use later!
atYevP··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Yev here -> glad you were able to restore your data! The limitation exists because the longer we keep data the more it costs us, the 30-Day Version History we have allows us to eventually reclaim space. That said, we're looking at ways to make it easier!
atYevP··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Yev here -> that's similar to what we saw too! It's one of those things where because we'd not done it, there was a bit of dread (not because we thought we'd be skewered, but because we really don't want to let folks down). However, once we saw the early responses rolling in, there was a collective sigh of relief.
atYevP··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Yev again -> thank you for the trust :)
atYevP··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Yev here - wow, good eye! I'll get it fixed! *Edit -> interestingly, that $5 is there to make a point and isn't really talking about prices, but I changed the text to say "for one license" - which still works. Good catch!
