asylteltine··on I literally spoke with Nvidia's AI-powered video game NPCs
I hear this argument all the time but this is not that. Industrial Revolution created tons and ton of new jobs in addition to the ones it removed. This would basically just remove most jobs and create very few, extremely specialized jobs that 99.99% of people can’t do. AI is going to be our demise as a civilization.
asylteltine··on I literally spoke with Nvidia's AI-powered video game NPCs
Yeah this is crazy. I don’t understand how people don’t see this as civilization ending.

Voice actors? gone

Writers? Severely cut down, maybe two main writers.

Designers? Eventually gone

This is the end. Eventually programmers will get replaced too. We just won’t need any employees. This is the end of civilization. We have to stop before it’s too late

asylteltine··on Ubisoft Says Out Loud: We Want People to Get Used to Not Owning What They Bought
That’s not a good argument because what if you stole something from a store ALL the way in the back covered in dust that literally no one even knew about. Would you say that’s not theft because it’s not a loss of value?
asylteltine··on Ubisoft Says Out Loud: We Want People to Get Used to Not Owning What They Bought
I agree ideologically but intellectually this isn’t true. A movie ticket is a license to watch the movie. If you sneak in, would anyone say that’s legal? Piracy is the same thing. Buying a video game these days is a contract for a license to use the game. I hate it, but that’s the legal aspect
asylteltine··on Ubisoft Says Out Loud: We Want People to Get Used to Not Owning What They Bought
I agree but on the other hand what happens when you want to play the game in 6 years and they removed it? Or they removed it for political reasons? I have used Ubisoft+ in the past especially for assassins creed so it’s good but it has drawbacks. I would hate to stop owning most of my games. I mean it doesn’t help that Ubisoft games after 2010 are just throwaways anyway. Remember when Ubisoft was the king?
asylteltine··on Spotube: Open-source Spotify-Youtube client
Pirating at least on legitimate private trackers is about quality and availability. For example, you CANNOT stream certain episodes of South Park, always sunny, etc because of wrongthink. Some things are also unattainable like gravity Lux edition. But yes I agree otherwise, just buy stuff. I stopped pirating games when I got a real job.
asylteltine··on What's that touchscreen in my room?
Small bit about that Wi-Fi remark. Yes in your case it’s close to the server but Wi-Fi lets you mount the touchscreen anywhere. Wi-Fi completely makes sense here.

Sure they impact it, but are they the cause? Are they the entire story? Are cultural differences to just be ignored?
asylteltine··on Haier hits Home Assistant plugin dev with takedown notice
Haier is abusing the threat of legal action that’s not the same thing
asylteltine··on Haier hits Home Assistant plugin dev with takedown notice
So? If you don’t want people using your APIs there are ways to block them. If it’s public, don’t complain.
asylteltine··on Get Out of Jail Cards, 2
No they wouldn’t. They COULD indicate systemic problems but it is just as likely they indicate cultural problems. It’s incorrect to just assume it’s “the system” and not helpful to anyone.
asylteltine··on Haier hits Home Assistant plugin dev with takedown notice
I’m really worried this will become common practice. We MUST fight against this otherwise they will take away open source from us. Making an integration to work with devices you own is NOT ILLEGAL. I’m happy to contribute to a qualified and trustworthy gofundme to protect devs. I myself have a few integrations I made and would refuse to take them down. Granted, I intentionally don’t use any “cloud” api garbage.

Disproportionately compared to what?
asylteltine··on Get Out of Jail Cards, 2
They don’t harass and kill minorities. This is hyperbole.

asylteltine··on Get Out of Jail Cards, 2
Oh yeah when I call the police because I got assaulted I would love a case worker to come and talk down to me about the sociology of crime. Just what we need!

But is Apple Inc “the company” that runs the App Store? Apple Inc doesn’t make profits that’s the Ireland Apple.
asylteltine··on Passwordless: a different kind of hell?
Exactly. Being a thief is a personality. We need to lock them up forever. How dare someone take something that isn’t theirs.
asylteltine··on Passwordless: a different kind of hell?
But they don’t steal food they steal TVs and power tools or cars. It’s a lifestyle not a survival mechanism. When I was poor I stole food so I wouldn’t go hungry. I never stole money or robbed people… those are just lame excuses that allow them to keep committing crime.
asylteltine··on Passwordless: a different kind of hell?
I agree! And I think we could if we had very harsh punishments. We are way too lenient on crime.

Steal? Life in jail.

Litter? Year long sentence.

Assault? Life in jail.

Criminals are going to commit crime and there is absolutely no evidence that rehabilitation works for those kinds of crime. We need to keep them away from society and change our culture to be entirely intolerant of crime.

asylteltine··on Passwordless: a different kind of hell?
The reason this happens is because of bad actors. This is why we can’t have nice things. Walk around and pay attention next time and you will notice all the little things that are shitty because of bad actors like thieves.
asylteltine··on Scrum Sucks
Scrum sucks and much like HR it’s a made up field to get buddies employed for literally no ones benefit except their own department. Stand ups are never useful. Never. Not once in the history of the human race has an engineer ever though man I’m so glad I read out the state of a jira ticket to someone who doesn’t even know how to push a git commit.

Cars do suck. Get a motorcycle! Cars can’t even compare in coolness, speed, fun, and value.
