asu_thomas··on Meta throttles 404media investigation on drug ads, continues to advertise drugs
> the reason they are prescription-only is that the involvement of a trained professional who has detailed knowledge of the patient's specific history is absolutely required to determine whether or not the drug is appropriate for that patient's condition

I have a bridge to sell you.

asu_thomas··on The College Board website shares GPAs, SAT scores with TikTok and Facebook
The College Board is a perfectly legal enterprise, and how could you know their reasons for how they do things? Besides, they are a "not-for-profit" organization so we know for a fact that they don't want profit.
asu_thomas··on The College Board website shares GPAs, SAT scores with TikTok and Facebook
Nobody ascribed a cause to anything. My only point is that it's reality, not imagination.

People just making shit up is also a known problem in cognitive psychology. Very interesting stuff.

asu_thomas··on The College Board website shares GPAs, SAT scores with TikTok and Facebook
Who said anything is fine? It's both more evocative and more effective to recognize reality as reality than to insist that it's fantasy.
asu_thomas··on The College Board website shares GPAs, SAT scores with TikTok and Facebook
> It would be comical if it weren't so dystopian

Dystopian? It's literally just plain capitalism in regular reality. Why insist it's something imaginary?

asu_thomas··on AI isn’t good enough
> There is a persistent structural imbalance in the U.S. workforce: too few people for all the jobs

Lies. If the minimum wage increased proportional to inflation, none of these "jobs" would exist.

The McDonalds sign-on bonus is nothing but a loan, just like all sign-on bonuses with a retention requirement. Such arrangements merely require that minimum wage is low enough to partition that compensation out of the base wage, a modern American financial industry to efficiently enforce the contracts, and a society with no remaining semblance of dignity in sight.

asu_thomas··on ChatGPT turned generative AI into an “anything tool”
> Most of my researcher colleagues seem to have similar distaste for wanting to make money. The work is the goal.

You sure give the profit motive a lot of due for someone who claims to be above it.

Hard work and perseverance is a human instinct that is undermined by antisocial institutions like copyright, which has no precedent absent the barbaric mode of relations we call capitalism.

asu_thomas··on IBM study: 40% of workers will have to reskill in the next three years due to AI
This is literally Marxism. Not similar to Marxism, but literally Marxism.
asu_thomas··on AMD's 7900 XTX achieves better value for Stable Diffusion than Nvidia RTX 4080
A head-to-head comparison would render less ad views.
asu_thomas··on Landlords Are Pushing the Supreme Court to End Rent Control
If you don't bother to mention how they attained the capital, you could be describing feudalism as well!

Realize the most important aspect of capitalism is the ability to accumulate capital, to a fundamentally infinite end because any limits will be overturned by the controllers of the capital.

asu_thomas··on Landlords Are Pushing the Supreme Court to End Rent Control
> Capitalism is a monetary policy, not a form of government.

Capitalism is a mode of social relations that monetary policy is downstream from. Remember capitalism was established as dominant by way of revolution. Capitalism and democracy fundamentally contradict one another from the outset, but democracy was capitalism's path to victory. The contradiction still remains.

asu_thomas··on Landlords Are Pushing the Supreme Court to End Rent Control
It's called capitalism for a reason. What are you suggesting as an alternative?
asu_thomas··on Landlords Are Pushing the Supreme Court to End Rent Control
Recent decades suggest that, with a bit of strategy, backlash from curtailing economic protections for working people can easily be minimized to spiraling debt, homelessness, addiction, and suicide, in that order. No biggie.
asu_thomas··on AI-generated art lacks copyright protection, D.C. court says
> I see this a lot on HN

It goes right along with the belief that capitalism is a naturalistic ideal, as opposed to a temporary state of societal organization maintained for the benefit of a few people.

Also, for the reasons you give, copyright itself is devoid of principled logic.

asu_thomas··on New book considers the impact of electronic logging devices on drivers
Absolutely, but one of them is easier to argue for.
asu_thomas··on Cruise agrees to reduce driverless car fleet in San Francisco after crash
Humans don't have an incentive to increase road use with the tradeoff of breaking down proportionally more often. A startup like Cruise is objectively incentivized to accept that tradeoff.
asu_thomas··on Cruise agrees to reduce driverless car fleet in San Francisco after crash
Morally, maybe so. Politically, the US is a capitalist society and there's no chance of this happening.
asu_thomas··on New book considers the impact of electronic logging devices on drivers
> The road was fun

I think what you mean is that drivers had some sense of dignity. Let's not confuse that with fun. We need to be clear about what's being lost; it's no laughing matter.

asu_thomas··on Job Corps: free, residential training and education for low-income young adults
The wages are too low. Without assistance, they'd probably commit suicide, so you're logic is based on a false binary. A job that doesn't earn a base level of dignity is not necessarily worth living for, so people give up. It's very simple.
asu_thomas··on New York City bans TikTok for government employees
"Clicks" are not the purpose. Advertising is. It's ad-bait.
asu_thomas··on We reduced the cost of building Mastodon at Twitter-scale by 100x
And advertising. Twitter is an advertising platform.
asu_thomas··on Editorial: California should say goodbye to grass that’s only there for looks
See: priority

Something being a problem for someone doesn't mean it's a priority.

Poor people will never prioritize global warming. They will always have more urgent priorities. This is one reason why environmentalism under capitalism is absolutely doomed.

asu_thomas··on How to run a miserable code review
> Bonus if the vague comments relate to some refactoring that you'd like to do

I am extremely ashamed to say I have left a comment like this before. At the time, I was frustrated about never being able to discuss anything over a call. There is no excuse, though.

asu_thomas··on Google marked https://old.reddit.com/r/programming/ as unsafe
> no way to get an incorrect flag lifted in anything like an acceptable timeframe

Define "acceptable timeframe"

asu_thomas··on Editorial: California should say goodbye to grass that’s only there for looks
Fair question.

If you're talking about actual laborers, most of them aren't even citizens and this is not a priority for them.

If you're talking about the corporate boards who run the agriculture industry, this increases cost without increasing profit so this is not a priority for them.

I just can't think of how the agriculture industry could possibly get behind this.

asu_thomas··on Editorial: California should say goodbye to grass that’s only there for looks
> They could probably dramatically reduce the amount of water used by agriculture...

Politically, "they" could not and that is the problem. Think about this. Who is "they?" Who could have the political power and will to do something like that without the support of the agriculture industry?

asu_thomas··on The US government is taking a step toward space-based nuclear propulsion

asu_thomas··on Judge sends Sam Bankman-Fried to jail over witness tampering
> this is the first I've heard of that decision

That's because it's not true. The deal was not stopped. It was only delayed, but I wouldn't place blame on parent for getting this wrong; the media has done their best to imply otherwise.

asu_thomas··on Judge sends Sam Bankman-Fried to jail over witness tampering
The ruling class would love for you to think the supreme court stopped the Sackler deal but they absolutely did not. They only delayed it.
