astura··on Man discovers his parents' coffee machine used 1TB of data in 10 days
"really slow?"

Sure, 120V is slower than 240V, but it's still pretty quick. If I'm boiling a full ass kettle for an iced tea pitcher it might take me 5 minutes. Only enough for a cup of tea is maybe 2 minutes.

astura··on I'm in a Meeting
Totally normal. The only time I ever used my camera is conducting interviews.

Ironically, that would enable tracking much more than the normal case, which is a hotel stores the scans on a hard drive on the closet that nobody every looks at unless they get a subpoena.

>previously they could be on paper - a secret between you, the pen, the paper, the pharmacist and the gods

Excuse me?

If you weren't paying with cash whoever paid for the prescription (govt, insurance) has a record of it. The pharmacy that filled the prescription has a record of it as well as the doctor who wrote it.

If your family or housemates wanted to know what you did online they could just flash DD-WRT onto the router and turn on logging.

>if I had bean in management I would have fired anyone involved with that decision.

Oh, I love the bit where a programmer always proudly chimes in with this statement as if it means anything.

>My browser was carefully containerized, with a ton of anti fingerprinting measures, VPN, Linux, Librewolf, everything

Doesn't that just make your browser very unique?

astura··on So you think you could be an electrician?
>in my area they make as much or more than mid level software engineers

Where's that? In the US the median annual wage for electricians was $63,190 in May 2025 whereas it's $135,980 for software engineers.

Of for fucks sake, this comment is so backwards, it reminds me of an ex of mine who refused to brush his teeth because doing so caused his gums to bleed.
astura··on Celebrating the 100th birthday of the kidney donated to him as a teenager
A man who lives in Webster, in this case, Webster, New York. A suburb of Rochester.
astura··on Celebrating the 100th birthday of the kidney donated to him as a teenager
TFA mentioned this is very exceptional, it says both that it's the longest lasting transplant this hospital has ever done and that a living kidney donation typically lasts 15 to 20 years. Meaning your 19 years is typical.

The transplant itself was done 48 years ago and the mother was 52 at the time (thus the kidney was already 52 yrs old at the time of transplant)

astura··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Herbal cigarettes have been a thing forever. They are common on film and TV sets when actors need to smoke for a part but don't want the nicotine.
astura··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
It might be addicting, but it's still overcomable, since 2002 there's more former smokers in the US than active smokers. 66% of all Americans who have ever smoked have successfully quit.
astura··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Smoking on public transit (and literally everywhere else too) was totally normal and common up until the 90s when regulations started to trickle in. When I was in elementary school teachers smoked in the teacher's lounge and would talk about when they used to be able to smoke in the classroom. My grandma would take about smoking while at work, and she worked as a seamstress.

Honestly? I think it's just a mindset.
astura··on Attention is all you have
I've seen much bigger dumpster fires on Hacker News threads than what my friends put on Facebook, which is 99% just personal updates and pictures.

Sounds like a personal problem if your friends are going around causing dumpster fires.

astura··on Attention is all you have
>Don't be so dense.

I'm not the one bragging on social media how I don't use social media. I'm not the dense one here.

astura··on Attention is all you have
You're on social media right now, Hacker News is social media.
astura··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
> Using real food to carefully craft a scene, no matter how "done up" it is, is still representative of what's in the product.

False, food ads use fake food, not real food "done up," straight up non-edible fake food. It's been like that since the dawn of time.

astura··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
>That needs to be illegal. I thought it _was_ illegal.

Ummm.... I have news for you, pretty much all ads have used fake food since the beginning of advertisements.

Nobody ever cared that McDonald's ads makes McDonald's food look appealing but all of the sudden when mom & pop places can do the same cheaply and easily there's lashing out saying it should be illegal? Wtf?
