astorsnk··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Else Tired of the Self Enforced Limits on AI Tech?
> Regulated how?

I don’t have the knowledge to decide this on a whim.

> How can regulation address what you mentioned?

By limiting the companies creating these models. Eg, you can’t create a model that produces nudity, gore etc.

> Harassing someone is already illegal. > Should hammers be regulated because they can be used to bludgeon people?

Stabbing someone was illegal but we in the UK we still banned carrying knives in public. These things are not black and white and trying to frame them as such will get you nowhere.

astorsnk··on WhatsApp goes down for users globally
Disagree completely. I’d much rather have a link to a trustworthy source than a random person writing “Tell HN: WhatsApp is down”. The post you think should be frontpage is useless imo. Take the time to link to a source instead of trying to beat everyone to the punch to get a little karma.
astorsnk··on I’m Not Sure That (If?) GitHub Copilot Is a Problem
Most of the comments I've seen on HN have been personal opinions or legal questions rather than legal opinions. Copilot may be 100% legal - that doesn't make it 100% ethical (depending on your personal ethics).
astorsnk··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Else Tired of the Self Enforced Limits on AI Tech?
That it be regulated and the people that create the tech act responsibly.
astorsnk··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Else Tired of the Self Enforced Limits on AI Tech?
If someone can use the tech to produce realistic images of someone they can use those images to harass and abuse that person. That’s a horrendous position for someone to be put it. I’d advise looking at some peoples stories of being the victim of revenge porn, upskirting etc. very hard to empathise after hearing those accounts.
astorsnk··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Else Tired of the Self Enforced Limits on AI Tech?
You’re assuming these restrictions are enforced by others. That’s not necessarily true. If I was building these tools I wouldn’t want to know that they’d been potentially used to create content I ethically object to, and I would restrict them in such a way that I don’t have that hanging over me. That doesn’t make me the morality police, it’s me protecting myself. If you want a tool that allows you to generate anything without limits, build it yourself. Stop complaining about what other developers are choosing to do if you’re not willing to build your own product that sticks to your beliefs (that you likely haven’t fully thought through the consequences of).
astorsnk··on Pocket Casts goes open source
Exactly! What features do we really need? Many “feature” suggestions I come across are people trying to make podcasts something they’re not so that they suit the person writing.
astorsnk··on DaVinci Resolve for iPad
They're likely pricing in further changes. Better to assume things will get worse and price that in once, than have to reprice every few months.
astorsnk··on DaVinci Resolve for iPad
It's not like they did it out of spite or greed - both the EUR and GBP have plummeted against the USD over the last year. One area they could look at though is outrageous storage premiums. The price jump between levels is now a joke.
astorsnk··on 75% of the time we spend with our kids in our lifetime will be spent by age 12
Anecdotally I see this with my friends who’ve had kids. A bunch of them all had kids roughly the same time (all within a year) and it’s fascinating how differently they all react. On the extreme ends you have one that nobody sees anymore because he has a child. On the other hand you have the guy that does everything he used to because, when possible he brings the baby, and when not his wife will take care of it (and he’ll do the same for her). What I’ve found most interesting is that the things he brings the baby to do (e.g. camping, or a music festival, the pub) are things the other guy would think are impossible. So I think a lot of it comes down to mindset and compromise (e.g. go to the music festival but stay in the family campsite and understand that you might not be able to get wasted but you’ll still have a great time listening to music and being with friends).

astorsnk··on The deception of “buying” digital movies
>> Last year I was in the UK visiting family and was unable to watch races there, despite havng already paid for them, as the geo restrictions were different.

Yep, thank sucks. You can thank brexit for that. AFAIK services offered in one EU country have to work throughout the EU (so if you were in Germany it would have worked). This meant that on holiday (coming from UK to Spain) a few years back I was able to watch F1 live on my phone via the NowTV/Sky app. This year - geo restricted.

astorsnk··on The deception of “buying” digital movies
>> You buy a bunch of iTunes movies in Canada, then move to the USA, and you no longer have the right to watch them anymore due to licensing.

Maybe this is true from the perspective of the license but it's not something Apple enforces through tech. For example, I have a two iTunes accounts for two countries. I can purchase content through both and use that content anywhere without restriction. They make it a big pain because you can't switch your account to a different geo after it's created but with multiple accounts your content isn't actually restricted.

astorsnk··on Ask HN: How to find what I am really good at?
>> How do you find 1 thing you are really good at and stick with it?

Maybe if you stick with one thing you'll become really good at it. Most (maybe all) people aren't inherently really good at anything.

astorsnk··on Prompt Engineering Is Hard
Is it really skilled? I feel like it's just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. You have an idea, write a prompt, and then edit and re-run that prompt repeatedly until you accidentally get what you want.
astorsnk··on Prompt Engineering Is Hard
Legal or illegal, there's a big ethical debate to be had. Swallowing up the work of others and using that to generate derivative/new work that _a lot_ of people (I've seen half a dozen stock photo AI sites this week alone) are then trying to use to replace the original creators doesn't feel right.
astorsnk··on Parag Agrawal Texts Elon Musk
What a terrible take. Yep those 8000 people have been coding an edit button for the last decade. You can’t be serious?
astorsnk··on Google CEO tells employees not to ‘equate fun with money’ in heated meeting
Really? The clothes are my least favourite of the swag items. Send me it without the company logo and it's a great gift. But if I have to walk around looking like I'm in uniform then I'd rather buy my own.
astorsnk··on Google CEO tells employees not to ‘equate fun with money’ in heated meeting
>> > Pichai was asked, in a question that was highly rated by staffers on Google’s internal Dory system, why the company is “nickel-and-diming employees” by slashing travel and swag budgets at a time when “Google has record profits and huge cash reserves,” as it did coming out of the pandemic.

What is this weird obsession with 'swag' in tech companies? My company sends packs of it on a regular basis as a motivational tactic. It's generally not stuff I need, or want, it's wasteful, and there are much better ways the company could be spending that money (and the HR/marketing employees time). I've stopped adding my address to the list at this point when they ask for it.

astorsnk··on Ask HN: About to have a child, completely burnt out at my job, what do I do?
>> At the moment, the only thing that really and truly matters is your wife/partner's health and your baby.

Maybe it’s just the phrasing of this and it’s intended differently, but it seems like terrible advice. You should never put your own mental health last. If you’re in a hole you’re not going to be able to help anyone else. If OP has just found out they’re having a baby they likely have some time. If they use that time to focus on themselves and get themselves in a better position they can be in a much better mental state to help when the baby actually arrives. The statement I quoted reads like the OP doesn’t matter and he should accept that. But maybe I’m not understanding your intention fully.

astorsnk··on Queen's funeral: Heathrow cancels flights on Monday
Over 100 cancelled flights and the legal entitlement to compensation won’t apply because of “extraordinary circumstances”. This is in addition to cancellations yesterday also due to movement of the body to Westminster.
astorsnk··on Extinction Rebellion: Climate activists stage protest in Commons chamber
It’s an oversimplification. Protests that cause disruption are not a problem, but you need to keep in mind who you are disrupting. For example: some action to block/prevent private jets from taking off and disrupting wealthy users = great. Blocking the road to airport causing families that have spent years saving for their family trip to miss their flight = bad.

I also disagree that “by definition there needs to be consequences”. Marches, showing the strength of feeling via the number of participants, have been successfully many times and cause little disruption other than closing some streets in the city centre.

Regarding the climate crisis being an economic issue - that doesn’t matter to the people struggling to heat their homes, or feed their children. Those concerns are much more immediate than how we can build a new green economy over the next decades, or how we may be impacting their grandchildren who don’t even exist yet.

astorsnk··on An Apple Watch for Your 5-Year-Old? More Parents Say Yes
Email was 30 years old at that point and was relatively widely used in schools and the workplace so I disagree. Every kid I knew had a Hotmail account and spent hours on MSN Messenger every day.

But my point is more that for a long long time kids have been able to learn independence from family daily at school, in a very safe environment. There’s a lot to lose by availing them of the crutch of constant communication with and tracking by their family.

astorsnk··on An Apple Watch for Your 5-Year-Old? More Parents Say Yes
> for keeping in touch when they start school

Do you mean generally once they’re school aged or while at school? I can’t see a reason a child at school would need to keep in touch with parents while at school. I don’t think I had to call home ever in 14 years of schooling.

astorsnk··on Extinction Rebellion: Climate activists stage protest in Commons chamber
> This protest in particular isn’t very disruptive

As I said it depends on the style of protest. This is not disruptive. Blockading roads during rush hour (a frequent tactic in the past year) is and is something I have more of an issue with. In the art gallery cases (of which there have been several) I would be annoyed if the art was damaged in any way. Damaging something that’s been taken care of for so long to make your point is selfish. In the case of climate protestors invading the track during the British Grand Prix I also have an issue. If the race hadn’t already been stopped due to an accident there was a very good chance protestors or drivers or spectators would have been killed.

Regarding the demands generally being of only the upper class, looking at British liberal politics in general, there is a focus on climate, immigration, gender etc and little focus on economic policies. When so many people are struggling financially the focus needs to be on economics first and everything else needs to take a backseat for a while.

astorsnk··on Extinction Rebellion: Climate activists stage protest in Commons chamber
Someone with actual general feelings here. People’s lives are miserable enough at the minute without being disrupted further by climate protest groups. This protest in particular isn’t very disruptive but other XR protests and the Stop Oil folks blockading roads can fuck right off. Demanding that we stop using oil during an energy crisis is idiotic and blocking working class people from getting to work at a time when they’re struggling financially is not helping your cause. As important as it is that we make massive changes to benefit our climate and planet, I think the middle classes that are typically involved in these protests need to read the room and realise ordinary people have much more pressing concerns (like heating their homes and feeding themselves) and they could do with a break from hearing that “the earth is burning”. It’s part of the reason a lot of the working class abandoned the Labour Party - the left is focussed on things that the middle/upper middle class care about instead of representing the working class.
