astockwell··on GraphJin – GraphQL to SQL Compiler
Having used APIs from SOAP to REST to GraphQL and back, I would agree. It got to the point in a recent project (written in Go) where just slapping another endpoint on, even with fairly particular nesting depth, was a 5 minute ordeal. That contrasts in my mind against another recent project using interpolated GraphQL which has been a struggle on almost every front: struggle to CRUD data, struggle to fetch certain corner cases, struggle with the performance/mem usage of the autogenerated graphql -> sql translation, struggle to bolt on custom graphql handlers for things not mapping neatly to models, struggle to debug/test, on and on. Just write a goddamn JSON handler.
astockwell··on Knots 3D – Learn how to tie over 150 useful knots
I know not everyone has (or supports) instagram, but this account is nothing but hands tying knots in different ways, and I love it: https://www.instagram.com/knotsandcues/
astockwell··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
Most people I know would like to see their children grow up.
astockwell··on Master of Orion
Shoot me an email (in my profile) if you’d like the key. The Dev company is defunct (otherwise we’d surely all still be playing Stars! Supernova), so I don’t think they’ll mind. Fun trick I stumbled on w/ the shareware version: you can take your shareware version save files (capped at lvl 10 tech) and open them in the ‘full’ game, and go right on researching.
astockwell··on Master of Orion
Stars!! Finally another living human who has heard of it.

I remember finding the limited demo on one of those "101 games!" $1.99 CD-ROMs, and then tracked down a full version at some remote Circuit City. Still have the installer and the key, and occasionally load it up on a VM (plays fine, only needed like 32mb of RAM :P )

A great game, but another one which suffered from the burden of overwhelm in the late game stages, and was hampered by the un-expected and abrupt limitation that you could only have 255 fleets (or some such thing). I read a breakdown that the cause was due to the designers only using an 8 bit integer for the FLEET_ID, so once you had that, the game would just discard any additional fleets you made.

Ahh, nostalga.

astockwell··on Please stop disabling zoom
It's because designers work with placeholder data. I worked full-time as a dev and saw this over and over and over again. The good designers would adapt, but some never learned.

As soon as you put real data into a website, especially if the website is a CMS that you've handed-off to a _non-technical_ client, it's going to overflow every pretty, grid-based box.

astockwell··on The Personal Security Checklist
If you press and hold both the lock button + the volume up button long enough to open the power-off screen, it will disable faceID (on iPhone) until you enter your passcode again.

Handy to know and easy enough to do discreetly in a pinch.

astockwell··on Jack Dorsey has regrets about building Twitter
Agreed. Many of my in-laws (with significant overlap of those who share click-bait articles after only reading the headlines) do not know how to:

- Reset their Facebook password

- Use more than 1 password for all of their accounts, social media, email, and banking included

- Use their TV if an HDMI device switches it to an unfamiliar input

- Stop (or start) push notifications for any app on their phone

The filter didn’t get lower, but a lower on-ramp was build that’s just low enough to let a 75yo create a Facebook account with their Hotmail.

astockwell··on How to make Docker images even smaller
Blogpost or it didn't happen! (Seriously though, I would love to read a post detailing this process start-to-finish for the uninitiated)
astockwell··on What to do if a cop tries to scan your face during a traffic stop
American here, let me spoil it for you: If a cop tries to scan your face, you LET THEM.

You do not move, you do not pout, you do not cover your face, you do not duck down into the car, you do not roll up your window. You LET THEM SCAN YOUR FACE. If you are feeling particularly privileged, you may gently, at-most-once, convey (ORALLY ONLY) that you do not wish to be scanned/photographed.

Then you fight it like hell with the police department's grievance process, with your local courts, and with your local city/municipal council, who should have budget oversight to the police force.

Headlines like this get people killed. Seriously.

astockwell··on Building a modern home in the woods
To all the questions about including costs, the only blog I've ever come across that was transparent and honest about costs of building a custom home was Mike Davidson in http://ahousebythepark.com/journal/

Granted this was 2010-2012 on a super-desirable WA plot, and inflation has probably 2-3x'ed, but still, it's a very interesting read and a good model for how to disclose costs and still maintain a modicum of humility.

astockwell··on Ask HN: How to optimize your career for happiness?
I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. A lot of folks work continuously to 'find the middle ground' of doing their job in a thoughtful, efficient, effective manner, whilst still defending their boundaries of work vs life. Finding that balance is probably what gives rise to so much discussion around 'not doing every last work task' that you possibly can, but rather prioritizing work tasks by impact/importance and letting some drop (with appropriate comms to your leadership/team etc etc etc).
astockwell··on Ask HN: What are the best books for professional effectiveness?
Atomic Habits - If you’ve ever had trouble making a good habit/routine stick, or making a bad habit stop, this book frames habits and their cause-effect relationships in a way I haven’t seen elsewhere, and in ways that I think about almost daily.

astockwell··on How to identify that light in the sky
As we all know, a decision tree without room for "Unknown Behavior" or error/failure modes (a.k.a. UFOs) is bound to result in a 2am page for a production outage very soon.
astockwell··on PlanetScale is now generally available
Oof. Well that's not good.
astockwell··on PlanetScale is now generally available
Their FAQ [1] clarifies this somewhat:

> Every time a query retrieves a row from the database, it is counted as a row read. Every time a row is written to the database, it is counted as a row written.

astockwell··on Updates to the Twitter developer platform
My historical perception of Twitter is that they were incredibly developer-hostile, to the point of almost being predatory (copy-ing 3rd party apps/integrations, then shutting said 3rd party apps out of the API...). This strikes me as similar to Google announcing a new Google Reader developer platform? However Somebody please tell me if my impression is outdated.
astockwell··on Senators Blast Facebook for Concealing Instagram's Risks to Kids
This. “Senators blast” everyone under the sun. Do something.
astockwell··on In software, when an engineer exits the team
This is a solid list, and it is true.

(Kindness/Responsibility) If I’m well paid, but someone is a full-on jerk to me/my team (particularly if they are at a very high level — in fact the higher the level the smaller the slight needs to be to have big impact), I will start to look, and it’s only a matter of time until more money finds me.

(Balance) If my wife starts telling me she misses me, or that my kids miss me, or asking why I couldn’t come to the performance, I will start to look, and it’s only a matter of time until more money finds me.

If I’m paid under market.. we’ll, I’m gonna find out soon, and then I will start to look…

One I didn’t see in your list is working to align people with work they want to do. Not always easy, but something can always be done, and the effort to try is almost as important as the result. If I’m stuck doing meaningless work, or never able to complete something, or (worst of all) watch the new hires come in and do my projects because I’m stuck working outages, I will start to look…

astockwell··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
I believe this is just if it's sleeping with the lid open. If you go to Apple > Shut down... and let it complete, it will not turn back on unless you press the power button.
astockwell··on Remote work is widening the skills gap
LOL "Employees are underutilizing resources for upskilling" that is some serious spin. How about Employees are given enough work for 3 people while also expected to 'figure out some training to do'.
astockwell··on High genetic barrier to SARS-CoV-2 polyclonal neutralizing antibody escape
Maybe… maybe we _don’t_ deliberately try to create super-mutant-covid right now guys?
astockwell··on Ask HN: Advice on bringing community broadband to Los Alamos?
I don’t really have any constructive critiques beyond just saying that I support what you’re doing.

I think the long game that local politicians miss (or are financially motivated to not see) is that broadband is becoming as important to communities as roads. It facilitates lowering the costs of so many things, benefits companies+individuals+government, improves equality of access+opportunity, on and on.

astockwell··on Is management pressuring you to deliver unfinished code? (2020)
This _should_ be true, but isn't always, if you're at a company (or just have a manager) who will let the mess/blame fall onto your shoulders.

That being said, if you're at said company/have said manager, you should get a new job. I hear the market is hot.

astockwell··on Linux on the Framework Laptop
While that is true in the theoretical, it ignores human psychology. For example the Debt Snowball method has been so widely successful for ignoring precisely this black&white pragmatism.
astockwell··on The Winners of Remote Work
The #1 question I wish I could get answered for any prospective company (as an interviewee):

"Do you have your shit together?"

Seriously. This could avoid so much heartache.

astockwell··on Intel’s Arc GPUs will compete with GeForce and Radeon in early 2022
More promises tied --not to something in hand-- but to some amazing future thing. Intel has not learned one bit.
astockwell··on California Megafires Are Solvable
More articles like this please! Very well sourced, clearly stating the major nuances of the issue, and offering numerous actionable suggestions for fixes at multiple levels of individual and societal capacity. And (possibly most importantly) it carries itself with a positive and affirmative tone! I’m Disappointed at how negative the comments and nits here are.
astockwell··on Software estimation is hard – do it anyway
This is the truth. Change doesn't happen until the decision-makers feel the pain of their decisions.
