asteroidburger··on Native Secure Enclave backed SSH keys on macOS
Not necessarily; "read file" is very different from "execute command." The biometrics part is a substantial lift as well.
asteroidburger··on Native Secure Enclave backed SSH keys on macOS
It's much safer to export a key one time and import it into a new machine, or store it in a secure backup, than to keep it just hanging out on disk for eternity, and potentially get scooped up by whatever malware happens to run on your machine.
asteroidburger··on Ubuntu LTS releases to 15 years with Legacy add-on
You're not adding new features and such like that. Just patching security vulnerabilities in a forked branch.

Sure, you won't get the niceties of modern developments, but at least you have access to all of the source code and a working development environment.

asteroidburger··on AirPods libreated from Apple's ecosystem
The referenced Bluetooth bug on the Github readme seems like a pretty good reason. "We don't want to work around or deal with the bugs on other platforms" seems like a reasonable position.
asteroidburger··on Apple reports fourth quarter results
The camera on the back of the phone actually helps quite a bit with said data entry.
asteroidburger··on Amazon targets as many as 30k corporate job cuts, sources say
Amazon Web Services, Inc. is a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc.
asteroidburger··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2025)
Neat idea, even if it doesn't end up going anywhere.

Out of curiosity, are you able to share what your source of data is? Isn't GeoIP data typically licensed?

asteroidburger··on Evanston orders Flock to remove reinstalled cameras
There's a crowdsourced collection of ALPRs in OpenStreetMap. deflock.me/map has a display of that data.
asteroidburger··on How to install TrueNAS on a Raspberry Pi
I want to configure it myself because now I know exactly how it works. The configuration options I’ve chosen won’t change unless I change them. Disaster recovery will be easy because when I move the disks to a new machine, LVM will just start working.
asteroidburger··on Show HN: I Built a XSLT Blog Framework
XSLT 2.0 is Turing complete.

asteroidburger··on Installing a mini-split AC in a Brooklyn apartment
Until recently, they've not been as common here in the US. Fossil fuels are just so much cheaper for the end customer, and central HVAC units in homes are much more common here.
asteroidburger··on Installing a mini-split AC in a Brooklyn apartment
A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. In the winter, it provides heat; summer, it provides cooling.

It's greener because it's not burning fossil fuels (directly, anyway) vs. a propane / natural gas furnace, and it's more efficient than resistive heating.

asteroidburger··on A low power 1U Raspberry Pi cluster server for inexpensive colocation (2021)
Only 16GB of DDR4 and 1.2TB of storage is not exactly a lot, especially when it’s spread across all of those nodes.
asteroidburger··on Show HN: Nia – MCP server that gives more docs and repos to coding agents
This sounds a lot like how Kiro works. Your requirements and design are in a .kiro directory inside the project, allowing you to commit them. The process is structured within Kiro to walk you through generating docs for each phase before beginning to write code. Ultimately, it generates a list of tasks, and you can run them one at a time and review/update between each.
asteroidburger··on AccuWeather to discontinue free access to Core Weather API
Many people have no problem setting up a station and giving away the data for free.

https://map.purpleair.com/

This is primarily for air quality by default, but you can get temperature, humidity, etc as well. For each station, someone paid for the hardware and is sharing the data gratis.

asteroidburger··on The North Korean fake IT worker problem is ubiquitous
Who's doing a hard credit pull at all, especially before salary's negotiated and the offer's extended?
asteroidburger··on The North Korean fake IT worker problem is ubiquitous
If it was the norm, the fake worker problem would go away, and the hours would not be wasted.
asteroidburger··on Mini NASes marry NVMe to Intel's efficient chip
Do you have a coax drop in the room? MoCA adapters are a decent compromise - not as good as an ethernet connection, but better than wireless.
asteroidburger··on Tesla's energy storage business gets sucked into the company's downward spiral
Has a weird odor to it, wouldn't you say? A sort of musk, perhaps?
asteroidburger··on MCP: An (Accidentally) Universal Plugin System
MCP itself doesn't require the use of the LLM. There are other concepts, but for this use, Tools are key. A Tool is an operation, like a search.

Have a look at the Filesystem example MCP server - https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/blob/main/sr.... It has a collection of Tools - read_file, read_multiple_files, write_file, etc.

The LLM uses MCP to learn what tools the server makes available; the LLM decides when to use them. (The process is a little more complicated than that, but if you're just trying to call tools without an LLM, those parts aren't really important.) If you ask the LLM, "Find all files with an asterisk," it might deduce that it can use the search_files tool provided by that MCP to gain the needed context, invoke that tool, then process the results it returns. As an engineer, you can just call search_files if you know that's what you want.

If I can afford a seat above economy with room to actually, comfortably work on a laptop, I can afford the couple bucks for wifi for the flight.
asteroidburger··on What Happens When Hertz's AI Scanner Finds Damage on Your Rental
I think what's pretty galling about this is both how incredibly minor that "damage" is, and the insane junk fees tacked atop. $250 for what could be a smudge that's easily wiped off, but never would have been charged for anyway, and $190 in junk fees.

asteroidburger··on Silicon Valley finally has a big electronics retailer again: Micro Center opens
There's already a bunch of vacant Walgreens / Rite Aid / Bartell Drugs locations, with more to come. Surely one of the bigger ones would be adequate.

asteroidburger··on Synology Lost the Plot with Hard Drive Locking Move
I haven't used them personally so I can't vouch for them, but UGREEN's NAS line is the same form factor as a Synology unit, but it lets you run any OS. I'd probably put straight Debian on mine and handle it all manually as I do now. I wouldn't be surprised if you could put Unraid on it.
asteroidburger··on Microsoft employees recall their early years
Doesn't that include Google Workspace though? Sure, a dollar is a dollar, but presumably a huge chunk of that money is Workspace, meaning it's not going towards raw compute.
asteroidburger··on A note on the USB-to-PS/2 mouse adapter that came with Microsoft mouse devices
There's a purple adapter too that came with some keyboards. It looked like it came out of the same molds, so I suspect it's a similar situation.
