asteroidburger··on Show HN: Give your AI agents access to WhatsApp
Businesses should be using WhatsApp business accounts. They cost money per message sent and don’t support groups, but it’s the officially sanctioned way to do it.
asteroidburger··on My local model setup on an M4 Pro Mac Mini
It's a time sharing agreement, just like old-school mainframes and such. You're not getting a full machine to yourself, but a few cycles at a time.
asteroidburger··on FreeCORE TrueNAS Core – Continued
Yeah, I just run bare Debian myself. It's really not hard to setup LVM and Samba. And all of the major frontier models are well-versed in those things, so I used their help to get all of the various bits setup to make access from MacOS fast.
asteroidburger··on Why travellers are obsessed with foreign supermarkets
Oh I totally love sampling all the new-to-me snacks. And they make great gifts for back home too. (Just mind what your country does and does not allow across its borders.)
asteroidburger··on Gardner police discontinue Flock cameras as license plate readers face scrutiny
Does Axon offer the same sort of national, single-database that Flock does?

I'm far more inclined to trust my local department to manage their own database vs. a single database that everyone contributes to and reads from.

asteroidburger··on In South Korea, some savour last season of legal dog meat
Yes; I've genuinely lost track of how many countries I've been to - and I'm not referring to layovers. It is possible for one to forget about the cultural nuances of a country literally on the other side of the planet, though. Apologies for not appealing to your own specific experiences. And if that's your takeaway, you're missing the point entirely.
asteroidburger··on In South Korea, some savour last season of legal dog meat
> Other than in terms of human opinion

That's the point though. We don't eat horse either in many areas, for the same reason. Ever heard the phrase, "cattle, not pets" when referring to managing systems? As humans, we tend to form bonds with specific individual dogs, cats, horses, etc. But cattle, not really. That's not to say the animal doesn't have the ability, but they don't easily fit into our lifestyle. (I can let a dog loose in my house while I go to work - a cow, not so much.)

asteroidburger··on I stopped trusting USB-C cable labels and started testing them
No, we need to transfer a lot of power instead. So those with 800v cars need to be mindful to visit certain charger stations/types over other ones in order to get a fast charge, vs relying on the car to boost it from an older station.
asteroidburger··on A handful of cities have replaced Flock with Axon
It’s not a technical limitation. Nobody sees the need to build it that way though.
asteroidburger··on LG ThinQ Terms of Use
I concur about the picture quality of their OLEDs - it's incredible. But I can't say anything about their interface or software - I've not seen them for probably a year+ at this point. The Apple TV remote turns it off/on, and adjusts the volume. The LG has not been provided internet access.
asteroidburger··on Local, CPU-Friendly, High-Quality TTS (Text-to-Speech) with Kokoro
Have you tried /usr/bin/say ? Might already have something sufficient for you - there’s quite a few voices there.
asteroidburger··on Africans Are Turning to Starlink
Is anyone actually running new telecom copper these days? I’d be surprised if so.
asteroidburger··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
Looking forward to reading about it in The Lancet or another respected medical publication.
asteroidburger··on 10Gb/s Ethernet: switching to a Broadcom SFP+ module
If the cabling was installed before the drywall, good chance it's stapled.
asteroidburger··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Wouldn’t Kiro fit the bill?
asteroidburger··on US-Canada border library gets new Quebec-only entrance
The nice thing about having a rep that supports my ideals is I don't really see the need to. It won't change anything, and I don't need to convince them.
asteroidburger··on Apple fixes bug that cops used to extract deleted chat messages from iPhones
Plus, decrypting using a key stored locally cuts out a network roundtrip, which has battery and data usage impacts.
asteroidburger··on Apple fixes bug that cops used to extract deleted chat messages from iPhones
Both Apple and Google offer the ability for your app to intercept and modify messages before being displayed. Use that to send encrypted messages and decrypt them there, using your own code on the user’s device.
asteroidburger··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2026)
Moving over to the management track and trying to not suck at it.
asteroidburger··on JVM Options Explorer
Tell your developers to start logging the exception, not just a hard-coded error message.
asteroidburger··on Rescuing old printers with an in-browser Linux VM bridged to WebUSB over USB/IP
It’ll work great if you can get the drivers all aligned properly. I’ve tried a few times to get my 12 year old Brother laser setup like that, and each time I end up throwing in the towel.

Maybe I’ll try it again someday with an LLM assisting.

asteroidburger··on Decisions that eroded trust in Azure – by a former Azure Core engineer
The United States does not have a Secretary of War, and has not since 1947.
asteroidburger··on Floci – A free, open-source local AWS emulator
Sure, but that seems like quite a high gatekeeping bar for a test suite.
asteroidburger··on Floci – A free, open-source local AWS emulator
Not necessarily. Would you respond the same if the previous person said, "Was this built using an IDE" or "What qualifications do you have to write this software"?

Shit code can be written with AI. Good code can also be written with AI. The question was only really asked to confirm biases.

asteroidburger··on Floci – A free, open-source local AWS emulator
Does it matter?
asteroidburger··on Starlink Mini as a failover
I pay $25 for my backup 5G internet - but unlike a mobile plan, it's actually unlimited at 300mbps, and I don't have to resort to TTL shenanigans and such to use it for my whole network. It's just plugged into one of the ports on my router, and provides it with real public IPv4. Ran it for a few days when the fiber dropped out and consumed 200GB without complaint from either myself or the ISP.
asteroidburger··on Continuous batching (2025)
How long until “first principles” is a meme like “considered harmful”? Or are we there already?
asteroidburger··on Flock Hardcoded the Password for America's Surveillance Infrastructure 53 Times
It's good that MLT did cancel them, but there's still a ton up that way. Mill Creek, Lynnwood, Marysville, just for a few examples.
asteroidburger··on DIY NAS: 2026 Edition
For me, s/FreeBSD/Debian/. Same reason.
asteroidburger··on Moving from OpenBSD to FreeBSD for firewalls
Who is the "we" here? I've poked around a few pages on this fellow's site, and apparently haven't found the right one to answer that.
