asmosoinio··on Making our new homepage fast and performant
Might be intentional to make the interaction with the globe to stand out?

You can scroll from other parts of the page.

asmosoinio··on Facebook.com Not Responding?
It is back up now - and https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/facebook agrees with me.
asmosoinio··on Facebook.com Not Responding?
https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/facebook also says that it is not just me.

Update: But these two say it's up:

... and a friend of mine in another European country says it works fine for him.

asmosoinio··on Ask HN: Does your employer want you to state pronouns in email signature?
So "she/her" and not traditional "Mrs."? Because the latter does not fit many people these days?

Note edit: my native tongue Finnish doesn't even have gendered he/she. Quite an uncommon thing in languages.

asmosoinio··on Ask HN: Does your employer want you to state pronouns in email signature?
What does this mean in practice? Add what?

Disclaimer: Not from US, not English speaking natively...

asmosoinio··on For the first time in Europe, registrations for EVs overtook diesel
USD? Compare that to 1.40 € per liter, that's about 6.20 USD/gallon. A regular price in EU.
asmosoinio··on PHP 8: Before and After
> Python is not suitable for complex multi-layered systems

For example what?

asmosoinio··on You can no longer reinstall CS 2 or 3 even if you have the original disks
Actually it's not, you need to add it to your about text for it to be visible.

See https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=firecall in an incognito browser window.

asmosoinio··on Show HN: Browservice – Browse the modern web on historical browsers
On the screenshots page, I found this fun:

asmosoinio··on Adobe to remove Flash Player from web site after December 2020
Discussion from 2017 when Adobe released the end-of-life information: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14848786 - “We will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020”
asmosoinio··on Ask HN: Are my expectations on code quality and professionalism too high?
I don't think your standards are unreasonable.

Good practices pay off in overall being able to produce more _correctly working_ code. Even if in the short term it feels like for example writing unit tests "slows you down".

asmosoinio··on Workman Keyboard Layout (2010)
Not really - but I thought this was something new when reading the article.
asmosoinio··on Workman Keyboard Layout (2010)
This article is from (2010)
asmosoinio··on A Google Cloud support engineer solves a tough DNS case
That is quite the story! Sounds like a very large amount of resources spent on that case.

What was your companys role? Backup services/devices?

asmosoinio··on Show HN: Trade stocks from the command line with no commission
Looks like this is the answer:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23210385

Different market and laws.

asmosoinio··on Finnish basic income pilot improved wellbeing, study finds
Well-paid? I don't think that's a general truth. Many Finns would disagree.
asmosoinio··on Show HN: Offline text extractor from screenshots in macOS
Same problem here - on Mojave 10.14.6

I already had a custom location for screen shots and selected that as Import folder in VisionShot

asmosoinio··on Is It Canceled Yet?
Wish each of these was a link to more info.
asmosoinio··on Real-time, in-camera background compositing in The Mandalorian
Why is this one person always referred to with "ASC, ACS" after their name?

> Greig Fraser, ASC, ACS

asmosoinio··on What's SAP?
> ... when compared to alternatives.

What do you see as the alternatives?

asmosoinio··on What's SAP?
Should have (2019) in the title?

Couldn't fine a date in the post, but it does say:

> It’s 2019, and SAP is ...

asmosoinio··on Apple delivers a new redesigned Maps for users in the United States
While the Waze app is still separate from Google Maps, I am sure Google is using a ton of the previously Waze specific (mostly user sourced) data in Google Maps since they acquired it in 2013.

asmosoinio··on Broot – A new way to see and navigate directory trees
As a Mac and brew user I would have needed to see "brew install broot" somewhere - since there is no Mac binary I was not sure how to test this until I looked at the comments here.

I am not sure if you have something to do with the "brew" installer for this on MacOS? Or does someone else create that?

Anyways, looks awesome, I think I'll use this at least for listing files by size.

asmosoinio··on The Polygons of Another World
I always thought 256 vs 200 was a PAL vs NTSC thing? Is that wrong?
asmosoinio··on Uniquely Canadian Stock Photography from CIRA
These are brilliant, I hope companies or other organizations from other countries follow suite.
asmosoinio··on Ask HN: We are shutting down our startup, I get our code. What now?
According to the CEO (assuming this is them), they had most of the investment money left. They shut down quite quickly.

asmosoinio··on The latest version of Slack has a setting to disable the WYSIWYG editor
I think they also got a lot of feedback directly through /feedback in Slack and support emails.

So they were not necessarily reacting ONLY on public outcry - they have direct feedback from paying customers as well.

asmosoinio··on Gopass – The Team Password Manager
Tangentially related: The gopher on that site is cool - try hovering it!

Works well on that page - looks good as a static image - but hovering gives a nice "wov" effect.

asmosoinio··on Designing Windows 95's User Interface (2018)
Worth reading the comments - as the original author of the paper Kent Sullivan chimes in: https://socket3.wordpress.com/2018/02/03/designing-windows-9...
asmosoinio··on Changes to Models S and X allow them to travel longer without larger batteries
I just read up on 3'000 to 5'00 mile intervals that might be prevalent in the US?

To me that sounds crazy. Many synthetic oils are officially approved to 15'000 miles.
