This is what makes our world special. Not all is as meets the eye. Illusion is powerful.
I’ve had a similar situation before, and I will say that of course they want to make you feel like an FTE while keeping you on contract. That is the best of both worlds for them, of which you reap nothing but self-employment paperwork.
If FTE, borderline.
If contractor, congratulations, you have just started an agency.
https://developers.google.com/sheets/api
- free
- framework agnostic
- easy to integrate (IMO relatively easier than parsing a WP API, setting up proper taxonomy, etc)
- your user is probably already familiar with Google Sheets
- not ideal for sensitive info, that's ok because this is a portfolio site for public info
- not ideal for large datasets, that's ok because your user will have a relatively small, static dataset
Here's the sample frontend: https://developers.google.com/sheets/api/quickstart/js
If it was for a big client needing a business solution, sure I'd say you need to choose Wordpress as it is industry standard. But because it sounds like your client is an individual who hired you for their own personal needs, IMO Wordpress is overkill here.
Better yet, just hook up a YAML flat file, show them where it is in Github, and give them collaboration permissions :D
I can also report I haven’t received a single TripleByte email since the issue was last brought up :) Thank you for standing by that.
Unless you mean start as in, type a command to begin “recording” and then type an end command when you’re done? Interesting idea
We are no longer able to discern truth from falsehood, and as a result are scared into polarization by the nature of our surroundings. We no longer morally stand strong against the pull of power as we may have once did.
The ensuing discussions are more often than not, nothing more than desperate attempts of talking past one another.
Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Palestinian, Israeli, human. We all deserve peace and love.
I want Palestinians to have a home. I want Israelis to have a home as well. It’s a complex issue. And because there is not necessarily an easy answer, we more easily fall victim to the tide of fear and frustration on a global scale.
Existence is suffering. May we all find a way to survive.
Just fanning the flames, let’s work together to find a solution instead of gaslighting.
May we never feel the pain of losing a child, let alone the world erasing them entirely with such a shameless response.
I was solely commenting on the SV compensation point, but yes, you’re totally right that he could be doing less work for significantly more money elsewhere. The accusations are unjust for sure. IMO less because of the salary numbers and more because commit count is simply not a good measure of employee performance.
E5 engineers at FB are making an avg 200k base [1]. That is not that far off what you would expect the difference to be between open source maintainer and senior engineer at Facebook.
That is not 3-4x. Even if you include stock, that will put the FB eng around 350k. You may have an argument for the 2-3x range but basically only at the very top level companies and senior roles, not mid level contributors. And by including stock or other forms of TC besides base, you begin inflating the impression of cash flow. Stock grants don’t land in your wallet like paychecks do. Your QoL or vested net worth will take time to be impacted. It’s not like all of a sudden you can now afford X% more in your daily life.
IMO HN likes to exaggerate compensation levels.

His diet doesn’t sound the worst, he seems to be active, just genetics? The beans every morning? He didn’t mention what he does for dinner.
I’d argue having children is the same. You can do it with zero effort, or you can do it with intention, to leave behind a better off generation, and devoting yourself selflessly as a parent to that cause.
I believe the lifelong quest of high-quality intention is what ultimately is the greatest achievement of life one can chase. Whether that is intentionally treating others with kindness and leaving pleasant memories, or intentionally raising healthy and inspired children who will continue to take up noble intention.
2) I get a weird vibe from the way you write/speak
3) I've been cold rejected from almost every one of those companies you listed, and I'm a senior engineer with a decade of experience making SV money and doing just fine. Look for smaller companies that people haven't heard of, there are thousands. It took me years of working at small startups before I broke into the big corps.
4) someone mentioned "tainting" your rep with non-dev jobs and sadly this is true. You need to get dev experience on your resume no matter what, the good news is that it's never been easier. Come up with an idea, build something, buy a $2 domain, and bam, you are now a fancy Founder of Tech Project and have dev experience on your resume, not manual labor. Bonus points if you actually stick to the project. Speaking of which...
5) Build projects. Like as many as you can. I aim to build a new project 1x a month just to keep in the habit. Anytime I need to interview, I have tons of live, production software examples to show off. HMs love to see someone who can ship code. It is the #1 thing I would do if I were you to get a job. Build anything. Just build stuff and put it online. This is the next best thing to having formal W2 jobs on your resume.
6) totally random and I'm not affiliated, but check out usertesting.com. I sent this to a friend the other day who is also struggling to break into tech - they will apparently pay $10 for every 20 minutes of testing. Better than being homeless and at least it's in tech and seems relatively accessible.
7) some of the best dev gigs and jobs I found early on in my career were diamonds lost in the Craigslist rough, just sayin’
Wishing you the best of luck.
I had a stint of about 2 years of job hopping every 3-6 months at the beginning of my career. Worked great for me every time.
The trick is to get the new job while you still are employed, not quitting and then looking for something new. Employed = attractive to other employers, but still a bit of a red flag. Unemployed = just a big red flag.
He even said it himself - they haven’t “turned them off” or limited them but that tells you all you need to know about their perspective on those “export tools”.
In the spirit of Ramadan, I thought I'd share a small project I've been hacking on recently - Salat Schedule.
Salat Schedule is meant to be a simple, beautiful way to check prayer times throughout your day. I got sick of the bloat and ads that seem to plague so many of the existing prayer times apps, and just wanted something more minimal. I don't expect it to ever change much. Maybe a way to view more days ahead of time as opposed to just one.
Uses browser location API to get user location to request times from Al Adhan [1]. Quran verses are pulled in via Al Quran Cloud [2]. Both of those tools are provided by Islamic Network [3]. Shoutout to them for such amazing work they've done!
I hope some may find use of this during this month of Ramadan, and would love to hear feedback of your experience.
Thank you and have a wonderful Ramadan.

Right now, my main use case for the iframes is quickly checking for visual regressions across all the sites I manage.
Every morning I would go round to all my sites and check each one by one from a set of bookmarks, to make sure they were looking good and accurate. This way, I can do all my morning checks from one site.
Yes, Pads are like the group or tab, and sites the individual asset.
Right now when you hit new pad, it just fires a window prompt which may get blocked lol - need to swap this out for in-app dialog windows, I will do this ASAP so others don't get blocked as well, thank you.
(Edit: oh, you mean you thought to add a new site it was "new pad", got it - maybe I can make this more clear, again thank you for such great feedback here)
I edited my description comment a bit, but yes you are basically correct, a visual bookmarks manager that can be utilized cross-browser and device without an account, and where you can quickly check and interact with multiple sites that may or may not relate to each other. Also, I want to add more devtool-like features such as maybe exposing the page console, load times, different viewport sizes, etc.
The long-term goal is a launcher of sorts with a built-in browsing experience. A browser wrapped in a browser where you can "install" webapps. Iframes aren't gonna cut it, though...
Super POC, 5h50m according to Wakatime, not all of the buttons work, code is a bit of a mess but relatively lightweight. Next.js with material-ui.
Currently not responsive, desktop only, due to some logic that needs to be written to handle the iframe zoom functionality on any screen size.
App handles data client side only via local storage persistency, no accounts needed. Eventually plan to add a P2P sync process via WebRTC to do multi device or maybe even sharing.
Why not a bookmark manager, you ask?
I like switching between browsers and devices and wanted a similar experience but one I could just access on a url while also being client-only (still need the sync feature mentioned above). I also plan to add more devtools-like functionality such as viewport size toggles, load time checks, etc to make it easy to get a high-level glance of all the sites you manage.
Having some issues with iframe performance, have thought about some solutions like serving an image until interaction. Ideas are graciously welcome!
Thanks for looking
