asicsarecool··on Oxfordshire clock still keeping village on time after 500 years
I wrote a nastygram to the Smithsonian after they replaced all the canvas on the original wright flier.

Maybe Douglass would have approved. That makes me feel slightly better

asicsarecool··on CERN gears up to ship antimatter across Europe
Not bad for a cat, nice work. Clearly you don't work in the cybernetics division.
asicsarecool··on Every Boeing and Airbus engine is held onto the wing by only 2 bolts
I'm fairly sure the engine will stay on with both bolts removed. I suspect they are retaining bolts and take very little strain
asicsarecool··on AI engineers claim new algorithm reduces AI power consumption by 95%
Don't assume this isn't already in place at the main AI companies
asicsarecool··on Google Chrome's plan to limit ad blocking extensions kicks off next week
I use Firefox and have never understood why so many people use a browser made by a for profit company
asicsarecool··on Calendar, Not Todos (2018)
Feels very alien to me. I'm a dad. Life is built around the children's calendar
asicsarecool··on A Slower Speed of Light (2012)
Wow thank you I cant believe I've been ignorant of this my whole life. Thank you so much
asicsarecool··on Tech startup connects to two satellites in orbit from Earth via Bluetooth
Good on them for trying. I wouldn't even try. As a radio guy this goes straight into the breaks physics bin, but if they make it work, fantastic
asicsarecool··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
I don't have binocular vision. I lived aboard a sailboat for a few years. I'm quite active with rock climbing etc and I honestly don't think I would be able to do anything better if I had binocular vision...

Just a thought

asicsarecool··on An infinite canvas for code exploration
This is right up my alley. Shame I'll never get to try it after experiencing the back button hijacking. Fail.
asicsarecool··on What can LLMs never do?
Wow. Please do a show HN.

Is source available?

I would love to play with this

asicsarecool··on The question that no LLM can answer and why it is important
Gpt4: Search the web to answer the question Which episode of Gilligan’s Island was about mind reading?

The episode of "Gilligan's Island" about mind reading is titled "Seer Gilligan." It is the nineteenth episode of the second season and first aired on January 27, 1966. In this episode, Gilligan gains the ability to read minds after eating sunflower seeds found on the island.

asicsarecool··on Multiple Planes Cross Runway While Another Is Taking Off [video]
I was flying into Atlanta international when thousands of planes were relocating from Florida to avoid a hurricane (ie so planes parked on the ground don't get damaged).

I believe at the time it was the busiest day for an airport in history.

That's when it finally made sense to me why they talk that way. Sometimes they need to

asicsarecool··on The Curse of Monkey Island
The greatest adventure game of all time. Larry Ahern is a genius
asicsarecool··on Silicon Valley's vision for AI? It's religion, repackaged
"These technologists propose cheating death by uploading our minds to the cloud, where we can live digitally for all eternity."

Alrighty then... I'm just going to hit the back button now. Bye bye

asicsarecool··on Jpegli: A new JPEG coding library
Awesome google. Disable zooming on mobile so I can't see the graph detail.

You guys should up your web game

asicsarecool··on European Space Agency to measure Earth at millimeter scale
My guess is that we will get final orbits and clocks to do PPP more quickly.

Today it's about a week.

I'm guessing we will get this at the speed we currently get rapid.

All guesswork... As a gnss guy who doesn't have knowledge of this project

asicsarecool··on Nvidia pursues $30B custom chip opportunity with new unit
Why the fuck was this downvoted.

Very occasionally I get the feeling HN is entering the /. phase

asicsarecool··on ChatGPT for Teams
Maybe we extend UTF so characters can have an AI generated flag.

People could work around it but it might help

asicsarecool··on Adam’s potential conflict of interest running Quora and Poe
Conflicts of interests aren't a problem. As long as they are disclosed and boards deal with them.

It's been one of the most frustrating things about this openai thing, learning how many people automatically think conflict of interest = bad.

asicsarecool··on Sam Altman returns as CEO, OpenAI has a new initial board
As Sam said they are still trying to work out how they are going to work together. He may be in the leadership team once those discussions have concluded
asicsarecool··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
You can't buy an 'average' Mazda, or an 'average' Mercedes. Each manufacturer has models up and down the reliability curve.

I guess this is interesting, but only actionable info is if you pay for a subscription and look up not just a particular model, but of a particular year and trim

asicsarecool··on You Won't Survive as Human Capital
Gpt summary:

The article "You Won’t Survive As Human Capital" from Palladium Magazine discusses the concept of human capital in the context of modern society and its implications. It argues that individuals are viewed as inputs in the process of social reproduction, quantified and evaluated by large organizations. The article highlights the limitations of this paradigm, notably in terms of reproduction and sustaining human life. It delves into the historical concept of ethnogenesis, where small, cohesive groups form distinct communities and states. The modern state, however, is seen as drifting from its founding purposes, with populations treated as replaceable elements. The piece concludes by questioning the sustainability of the technocratic paradigm and the need for new forms of life and community [[]](https://www.palladiummag.com/2023/11/24/you-wont-survive-as-...) asicsarecool··on Snapdragon X Elite benchmarks: Impressive gains over M2 and desktop CPUs
Framework motherboard please
asicsarecool··on SDRangel: Explore the electromagnetic spectrum with open source SDR software
Thread hijack: I dream of a TUI SDR Linux app, so I can SSH into a box with an sdr, control it, and somehow get audio back, either through some streaming port or somehow over the SSH link itself. I've looked but failed to find it - is the cli version of this app what I'm looking for?

Bonus points for waterfall display nicely rendered

asicsarecool··on USB-C head-to-head comparison
That is freaking awesome.

Feels like every nerd should have one.

Would be cool to have a version where it measures the resistance of the power wires too

asicsarecool··on Apple's $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans
The amount of time and care it takes me to design 10gbps routing on PCBs for runs of only a few centimetres, and how easy it is to mess up, I'm shocked that these long cables work at all.

That sort of money for this level of tech seems good value to me
