ashish_0x90··on Real-Time Log Collection with Fluentd and MongoDB
FWIW, Graylog2 will be switching to ElasticSearch backend from the existing MongoDB, citing lack of performance constraints(and lack of better FTS functionality) specific to MongoDB. Find the entire comment here - http://groups.google.com/group/graylog2/browse_thread/thread...

This is something I am working on right now, which is to have a centralized logging system in place for the production servers. Logs will get indexed in ElasticSearch(pretty awesome project, imho!!), where I can run search queries against the indexes. I am using logstash for parsing, routing logs from production servers to elasticsearch instance.

Redshift/f.lux - Redshift adjusts the color temperature of your screen according to your surroundings.

ashish_0x90··on How a 19-Year-Old Raised $5 Million to Revolutionize Search
I did manage to solve all three problems and I really liked the way the problems were put up on the website.

Anyway, I would still suggest trying for some more time before looking at the solution that that I have provided here - https://gist.github.com/849813 .

The first problem itself took me most of the time. All this time I was trying to come up with a optimal approach (and was stuck in some boundary condition in implementation for Approach 1) until I realized that even a brute force solution will work in this case because of the smaller text input.

ashish_0x90··on Businessmen: don't outsource your code.
I think it would probably work just fine if one outsources coding related work to a good freelancer/team. Building the right team takes both time and money and needs much more effort than hiring a good freelancer when time is of essence. In other words you can hire a good programmer to build the MVP if you are just a guy with the idea with little or no programming skills. Once you have a working/validated product you can work on how to hire a good programmer. I would add to the above that I haven't had any experience with all of this, And would love to hear about experiences anyone may have had.
ashish_0x90··on Opera holds the web's most valuable secret
I am wondering though how the content providers themselves will react to opera deciding ad strategy on content provided by them if this happens. Right now opera is stripping all the ads and so even now content providers are only getting traffic and are not actually making money by any ads that they may be serving or any other content monetization strategy. How much benefit the providers will get really by opera's this move if any? Will the providers be then asked to pay to be in control of ads served on their content? Will they will need adapt to different ads system if the user is using opera as compared to some other browser?
ashish_0x90··on What is the vesting period for co-founders in a start up?
Another idea would be a combination of cliff date + continuous periodic vesting past the cliff date.

A different approach to co-founders vesting that I read about earlier - Performance based equity vesting instead of the more common time based one. you can read more on this at the link given below :-

ashish_0x90··on Adobe, You Brought An Advertisement To A Gun Fight
From the article: "When Apple first launched the iPhone in 2007, had there been a great, lightweight version of Flash for mobile devices, .... It was no sure thing that this device would succeed at the time, and giving it every chance to (by including something like Flash) would have made sense. But there was no version of Flash ready that would run on the device (presumably without massive performance/battery hits)."

There were the obvious performance problems, which caused apple not to support flash in iphone.

They sure have a "killer" product(which has worked for them this far), but html5 support by websites is increasing everyday. This is probably because not only it's natively supported and doesn't need a external plugin to run, but overall experience is much better than flash itself.

I think there is not much that adobe can do now to stop this but get along and write great tools for html5 itself.

ashish_0x90··on Adobe, You Brought An Advertisement To A Gun Fight
Agree with your points. They should probably concentrate on their second chance with android, which they can use to show their product potential(if they can only can make a great product experience for end user, not the memory hogging exp. we are used to on the desktops)

They should also try to win over application developers community which apple have mostly ignored/dictated upon so far.

ashish_0x90··on How did Facebook guess my email address?
I often wonder how well ads work for social networks in general. I don't have problem with ads like facebook, twitter uses - promoting the apps on their platform.

Yeah, but if someone intends to monetize using ads, which are out of context or just plain annoying, probably just to get better CPI, that seems evil enough for me not to use the website.

ashish_0x90··on Minimalistic Memoization (Python, 16 lines)
The Function memoize looks like a python decorator to me(http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0318/ ),

IMHO, code can be more pythonic and still minimalistic if we declare fib this way using decorators

@memoize fib(n)

also we don't need to use the line : fib = memoize(fib) after this change

I don't know though if decorators were not used on purpose..

Update: I have commented updated code on recipe's page - http://code.activestate.com/recipes/577219-minimalistic-memo...

2 Suggestions:

1)Result Snippet summary can probably be improved, see google results for pdf files for python - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=filetype%3Apdf+pyth...

2)Website Info(domain name, url etc..) having the download link can be displayed alongside each of the search results.

ashish_0x90··on How Sanjay Jha Overhauled Motorola’s Culture
I think putting one person in charge ,while may cause a decrease in the number of good ideas, overall it will result in less distractions and bring in more focus into the product, also the ideas that get through are executed much more efficiently. Also as the article stated that by using the earlier model they did miss on lot of transitions, that can be avoided as well.
