asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: Books for Reevaluation of Life
Awareness by Anthony De Mello

I haven't been the same, in the best way possible, ever since reading it.

Anthony was well-read and traveled and his background as an Indian, Jesuit Priest and practicing psychologist put him at the perfect intersection of experience to deliver such a life-changing work that encompasses religion, science, relationships, your psyche, career, money, philosophy, spirituality, etc.

It's telling and (to me) validating of his mastery of life that, after his death, he was excommunicated from the church due to his 'blasphemous' works.

The ebook and audiobook are available for free here: https://archive.org/details/Awareness-AnthonyDeMello

asdfqwertzxcv··on Best Ways to Deal with the Russians, According to Nixon (1983)
Nixon describes how he felt it best to deal with the Russians during and after his time in office that still likely holds true (maybe moreso) to this day.

asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: Activity and reading to move through mid-life crisis?
I've found Arthur C. Brooks' wonderful series, 'How to Build a Life" touch on a lot of topics in this realm. Here's an article that's specific to a midlife crisis: https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2022/05/midlife-c...
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
You may be right, but it really has no bearing on this film/story at all. I just rewatched some of it and forgot how amazing the cinematography is!
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Just finished Dick Proenneke’s books, which the movie was based on. Such a great read that sounds boring - reading a guy’s journal as he lived alone in Alaska for nearly 30 years - but it felt like a warm blanket each time I’d dip into the books.

Want to note that he didn’t like the documentary. He felt it was too staged and inauthentic and didn’t use his voice as the voiceover. He mentioned that he wouldn’t do it again if asked.

asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Can’t upvote this enough. It’s fascinating what happens to each of the kids as some of them drop out of the series and then come back later. I hope it lives on past Michael Apted’s death in 2021.
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Yep, love it, too. But definitely more of an acquired taste.

Fires of Kuwait - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tUzkF_Dp8M

A first hand account of the firefighters who were sent to cap the oil wells that Saddam set on fire during his attempt to invade the country.

Senna https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aPLOQeSHrM The story of famed F1 driver. I'm not a racing fan but this one was amazing.

Apollo 11 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Co8Z8BQgWc Completely new footage was found of the complete Apollo 11 mission. The best doc of the space race, by far.

Anytime a person or "news" source uses the term "woke" they get instantly dismissed. Was hoping for some decent or balanced discourse on the topic, in spite of the title, and was not surprised to see the site and content not worth the kb's of space it takes up.
asdfqwertzxcv··on San Francisco braces for commercial real estate crash
Trump supporters and their (potential unwittingly) ideologic leanings seem to tick a lot of the boxes: "Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, ultranationalist political ideology and movement, characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation and race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy."

asdfqwertzxcv··on Email doesn't suck – it's email clients that need improving
I pretty much have this setup currently:

Email hosted by a 3rd party (like migadu or purelymail) then moved my cell number over to voip.ms, which sends all texts and voicemails to me via email, where I can now respond to texts via my email client. Then I use feedmail to have all my rss and social feeds email the full text and images to me in either a digest or when they are published.

I have to say I've been loving it. I'm currently setting up notmuch and alot as my mail indexer/sorter and commandline viewer, too.

asdfqwertzxcv··on Is there hope for Linux on smartphones? [video]
Looking forward to your review!
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What are the productive ways of using a smartphone?
I use mine for tracking things, communications and reading the most.

I've disabled notifications for everything so it's a passive tool, and then use it to track workouts (GymRoutines), steps (Paseo), diet (MyFitnessPal) and communicate (calls, messaging and email), then use it for reading books and articles (Moon+ Reader and Wallabag).

asdfqwertzxcv··on Wasn’t TikTok Supposed to Be Fun?
Hopefully this conversation quickly turns to social media and surveillance capitalism as a whole. Let's not do nothing because one shithead is trying to oust a competitor. The enemy of my enemy, yadda, yadda yadda.
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What service are you using to send marketing emails?
You can now also use most other SMTP services like Postmark, SMTP2go, Elastic Email, Sendgrid or Mailjet as of v6.0.1.1
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What are some unpopular opinions here that should not be?
Tech/Hacker culture has a lot of overlap with gamer and meme culture... These are the places where far-right (racist, fascist, and anti-intellectualism) ideologies have been subtly and not-so-subtly introduced. You're now seeing the fruit from the seeds that have been meticulously planted the past 10ish years.
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What are some unpopular opinions here that should not be?
"Trump/MAGA is just following the standard politician playbook of vilifying minorities for votes. When it works, future politicians do the same because it's easy and proven. And then the hatred turns to violence. It's not just MAGA, it's also the people who compare Trump to Hitler and compare MAGA to Nazis."

It started as the well-trodden "Southern Strategy" but now US' adversaries have poured fuel on the fire and its burst into full on fascist rhetoric and thinking now. This is quite literally, exactly how the Nazi party started and evolved. Stop downplaying this as anything but and start reading how the Nazis started and evolved - the StormTrumpers and GOP appear to be using it as their playbook.

asdfqwertzxcv··on On being tired
This is how my partner and I negotiated this.

We’re opposite in a lot of things we prefer: - They love traveling w/ crazy schedules, bouncing around timezones for a week or two at a time. - Sleeping and waking late. - Going out late partying with friends. - Spin classes or yoga with club music blasting. - When not doing the above, they stay home doing literally nothing but watching Netflix or reading in bed for days on end.

They are either fully on, or fully off. I find this exhausting and/or boring as hell, depending on what mode they’re in.

I prefer the opposite in a lot of ways: - Staying local, maybe taking a day or weekend trip every few months, and international trip once a year. - Waking and sleeping early - Time alone every day - Working on personal projects or hobbies - Lifting weights or exercising while listening to stimulating lectures or books. - Having hours-long meals with friends or family once or twice a week.

We’ve found that instead of trying to do things we don’t like to appease the other. We find things that overlap for us and make it a point to do them together whenever possible: - Cooking some meals at home - Walking our dog around the neighborhood - Going on day or weekend trips once in a while. - Meals w/ friends and family, when I peel off to go home after, when they go meet up with friends to burn the midnight oil.

When I hit the motivation plateau like you’re describing, simply going for a walk or going to the gym pulls me out of it rather quickly. By the time I’m done, I come back and am motivated to work on high-impact things. I’ve found that moving my body and taking a break from dicking around online, or doing low-quality “productive” tasks with little consequence is the key there.
