asdff··on What's Earth's dominant species by mass?
People leveraged on corn industry desired new avenues of profitability.

If only Haldane knew about how many microbes there are. He'd probably say god is on the side of the plagues.
asdff··on Account bans on Reddit
This was true 10+ years ago on reddit. You look at modern reddit though, most of what is being posted is by straight up content farm accounts vs genuine user content. Not all of them are even laundered through shill accounts anymore. Somewhere in reddit history it became fine for users like /u/sfgate to emerge and have some sfgate intern post sfgate articles as sfgate directly. That is still against most subreddit guidelines but no one cares anymore. Reddiquette is dead, none of the admins or mods care, and the userbase has forgotten it too.

The failing is of course OP gets caught up in it, all for sharing something genuinely potentially interesting they made as a creator. Meanwhile, various mass market agitprop PR departments and media companies suffer no issues being able to post disingenuously on modern reddit.

asdff··on Xbox has secured exclusive GTA 6 streaming rights
Way more than 80-300 hours. People are still messing around in GTA5 online and the game's been out 13 years. Some people probably have 4-5 figures worth of hours of playtime in that game.
asdff··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
What most people end up doing is just not registering their car after moving to CA. You will see cars parked in california neighborhoods for years with texas plates where the registration sticker on the windshield is from like 2021. Some cars just running fake paper plates or even no plates at all.
asdff··on In Ukraine, distributed renewables foil Russia's assaults
The thing is history disagrees with this. Any war from past to present, cities fall relatively quickly and dramatically while the countryside can resist empires for decades. America, the most powerful military the planet has ever seen, has lost twice now to the 100 villages in Vietnam and now Afghanistan.
asdff··on In Ukraine, distributed renewables foil Russia's assaults
If you power your generator off some homemade booze from stuff growing outside however, that is renewable.

You don’t buy it from the truck though. The truck buys it from a massive storage facility at the refinery, fills the truck, the truck drives off and fills a hole someplace. Finally you buy it out of the hole.
asdff··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
They go low tech in other ways as it is. Tech ceos banning their children from their own products for example, because they know the efforts being spent making these products psychologically harmful of course. But still, their solution is not some alternative, but abstention.
asdff··on Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too?
I'd like one surging with ultra high power for when people try and fill my recycling bin with random trash
asdff··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
Wouldn't be surprised if in a few decades you see the ultra elite start favoring older maybe early 2010s at most cars. The risk surface of a modern car is astounding. I mean cellular connection and drive by wire, screw planting a car bomb, you just steer it off a cliff from your arm chair halfway across the world and it looks like an honest accident to boot. The old cars on the other hand are airgapped. You actually need physical access to sabotage them. Risk surface is so much lower.
asdff··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
The closest thing is just any old basic obdii and that's it ICE car, where you rip out the oem radio and now have your power taps to do all sorts of fun hacker projects within that new found standard sized void in the dash.
asdff··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
Look at the options on the table for you: Either do nothing and buy new cars, or buy an older car and maintain it for the rest of your life. There is no option C, as you note.
asdff··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
Don't forget the banal in comparison "we've locked him out of hardware already installed in the car with a perpetual software license check"
asdff··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
That is interesting that they fail safe and don't just brick the car though. Maybe you can still go with a newer car but just wrap the antennae in foil or maybe just unplug it.
asdff··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
There has never been a technology with the promise of obviating both knowledge and physical based labor before. Now there is. Sorry, but this is unprecedented. The hubris to imagine all will just be swell is astounding to me.
asdff··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
The loom still needs people to run it, you fool. This one doesn't. How are you so blind to this nuance?
asdff··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
It is more like, "I'm a carpenter, and electric powertools that can also operate themselves, and run the sales department, and control a robot to change a lightbulb, and manage the entire company, and surround it with armed guards it also controls, just came out. I'm screwed."
asdff··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
Why would it not? The economic incentives make it inevitable. Might as well expect water to not flow downhill.

For a while waymo didn't even serve the hillier parts of where they were deployed. These roads are challenging conditions for even a human rideshare driver, when you are down to about a cars width of winding road, with a moving truck trying to pass in front of you, and a dump truck trying to move behind you, cars increasingly piling on either end, no way to turn around or back out, everyone increasingly honking and cussing as if that would lubricate things. It is kind of hilarious in a way seeing how quickly things effectively blow up in those street conditions with just the perfect storm of two slightly larger vehicles passing at once.

Now you can imagine a waymo in this mix how it would just be on its knees in a situation like that. How is a waymo to interpret "fucking move already you dumb fuck" into any sort of meaningful instruction?

I'm reminded of that story about activists in SF requesting a dozen waymos at once at some one way street and creating a localized denial of service attack essentially.

I can see that going away too. Eventually the average horse rider is going to be someone of stature of a saudi prince at the rate horse ownership coupled with inequality is going. They'd probably be all about buying the Gemini horse teacher over learning from some lesser birth stableboy. I bet eventually all tutoring from a human is seen as some lesser ick by the rich. People already think as much about you today when you talk about say not relying on claude code. It is all about optics and virtue signalling pedigrees at the end of the day.
asdff··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
Yes there are fewer hands on the job site but there are still hands at all. This is increasingly becoming not the case in the future. The goal is to fully eliminate all hands and all minds. There will be no more sponges of newly available labor. Then what happens exactly no one really knows or even wants to meaningfully try to answer, because the implications are too disturbing.
asdff··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
You think the drywall company is going to hire you? Why would they hire someone in middle age with no experience when there are no shortage of 20 year olds who already know the trade?
asdff··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
How can you not see that this time its actually different? The very need for labor is being obviated. Every technological change we had before still required a need for labor often an massive need that justified an entire city population. That is the difference. For the first time in human history, economic output is being severed from requiring maintenance of a labor pool. Considering we are that labor pool, things do not bode so well for us. As you state, look at the relative lack of abundance of candlestick makers and horeshoe makers and basket weavers and other colonial jobs. We are essentially making ourselves extinct and we don't even realize this.

No one actually wants to go there, but they post the damn jobs there, so what can you do?
asdff··on LinkedIn Larpmaxxing
Reducing it to this assessment misses a lot of nuance. Sci is probably one of the better engineering boards on the internet today. There's probably a lot of overlap between HN users and 4chan users actually.
asdff··on LinkedIn Larpmaxxing
What sucks abut these types of people and the latest get rich quick scheme of the day is that they are generally rewarded mightily by society and investment. Part of it is greater fool theory playing out lucratively, part of it is also these crypto bros or ai bros or what-have-you bros finding themselves with an ear to actual government power directly shaping the trajectory of nation states into their favor.

If only these could be identified before you've spent 6 months in them

Californian wine can be $400 a bottle or $4 a bottle.

Not in my experience. The best eating grapes are wine grapes by far.
