asdf6969··on The trap of "I am not an extrovert"
This is mental illness not introversion. You don’t get anxious about other things you don’t like. You might not enjoy playing board games or Russian literature. Does it stress you out and make you anxious? Probably not. You just don’t care.

Why do you think you’ll be able to afford healthcare? The new medicine is for the AI owners
asdf6969··on OpenAI O3 breakthrough high score on ARC-AGI-PUB
Terrifying. This news makes me happy I save all my money. My only hope for the future is that I can retire early before I’m unemployable

asdf6969··on When To Do What You Love
I spend around 25% of my income
asdf6969··on When To Do What You Love
> why is money such a big point in this article?

There’s no such thing as a reasonable quality of life on an average income anymore. People who don’t prioritize money will live like poor students for the rest of their lives renting with roommates. They will never have a family, healthcare, hobbies, or respect from their community.

Stop pretending that not prioritizing money is an option. It’s incredibly condescending. In most parts of most developed countries you need at least a top 20% income just to live with dignity.

asdf6969··on When To Do What You Love
Extremely out of touch and not useful at all. He needs to learn how to tell when he has something important to say and when he’s just yapping. How can he think making just a little bit of money is even an option? I have a very high income and I still can’t afford a home. I can’t even imagine how terrible my life would be if I took risks.

I get really bad insomnia if I use it heavily for a while and then quit. Also constantly sweaty palms and feet like hyperhydrosis. I don’t have any cravings for it though and it goes away after around a week.

Does anyone here know how it’s funded or what this would cost to host?

asdf6969··on Anarchy in Sudan has spawned the world’s worst famine in 40 years
This has a diagram showing the funding structure with 5 layers of bureaucracy between donors and the recipients of aid. This organization reduces that to 3 (The “coalition” that owns the website -> financial service providers -> mutual aid societies -> actual people in need).

So I ask again, have these people actually requested your help? How do you know what they actually need? Maybe the best solution is a way to gtfo of Sudan and let it collapse. Maybe they want weapons or chickens. I don’t know!

asdf6969··on Anarchy in Sudan has spawned the world’s worst famine in 40 years
Have they asked you for help? Mind your own business
asdf6969··on What should I do when someone blatantly copy my open-source project on GitHub?
Stop caring about this. You should be happy that people think your project is useful.
asdf6969··on Reddit banned me for developing Geddit
Reddit bans users for posting pretty much anything and then puts 0 barriers in place to stop them from making new accounts. Reddit recently removed the option to skip entering an email, but they still do nothing to verify the email address of new accounts. I make a new account every time I want to post and use a new as@df.xyz variant each time. Maybe 1/5 of my comments get through the filter though. I get responses from real users so I know it’s true
asdf6969··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I’m sorry for being negative. I just wanted to rant about people who try to schedule friendship on a calendar.

This sounds reasonable and I wish you good luck

asdf6969··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
I’m not interested in having a publisher vs platform debate. You know what I mean.
asdf6969··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I put a generic “out of office” block on my calendar if I have personal business and it’s rare enough that I don’t get why it needs a solution. Maybe other people are scheduling things during work hours a lot more often than me?
asdf6969··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
I don’t agree that internet platforms deserve to be in their own special category which is uniquely required to police bad content. The only reason it happens is because it’s not politically or technically feasible to do it when the message comes through another medium.

I think it’s wrong on social media for the exact same reason it’s wrong to arrest power companies if a guy staples printed CSAM to a utility pole. Same thing for monitoring private phone calls. We know that AI can detect people talking about terrorism on the phone and cameras can monitor paper ads and newsletters in public spaces, but nobody would advocate for making this a legal requirement because it’s insane. The fact that nobody cares is proof that the public does value privacy and free speech. Why are so many of them tricked into thinking the internet is an exception?

I want people to commit to their beliefs and either admit they want surveillance wherever it’s technically feasible or give up and recognize that internet surveillance is also wrong. No more of this “surveillance is good but legacy platforms are exempt” waffling. Very frustrating and only serves the interests of people who already have power

asdf6969··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
I know. That’s obviously true, but I hate that it happens and it makes no sense to me why more people aren’t upset by it. What I’m trying to get at is that complying with rules that are stupid, ineffective, and unfair is not a good thing and anyone who thinks these goals are reasonable should apply them to equivalent services to realize they’re bad. Cooperation with law enforcement is morally neutral and not important.

The real goal is hurting anyone that’s not aligned with people in power regardless of who is getting helped or harmed. Everyone knows this but so many people in this thread are lying about it.

asdf6969··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
They try to work with me but I cancel their meeting requests and deal with them through email. We should all be doing this
asdf6969··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I don’t have a personal calendar and my work calendar ends at 5. I think your market is a lot smaller than you think. The kind of people who ask friends to book time on their calendar are considered freaks anywhere outside of tech hubs
asdf6969··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
But why don’t they arrest them for allowing it to happen? Phone calls should be actively moderated to block customers who speak about terrorist activity.
