asddddd··on Bike manufacturer sees huge reduction in delivery damage by printing TV on box
Quite likely they get damaged even before that, while they are on semi trucks (feeders). Assuming that loaders don't realize these are vulnerable to crush damage, they could get stacked on top of each other at the bottom of a loaded semi with moderately heavy stuff on top. Judging from boxed bikes I've seen, there is minimal or no padding, so this could easily result in damage. Not sure if it's official UPS policy, but it's much less likely for a presumably-expensive TV to end up stacked like that.

Surveillance - that's what supervisors are for. Really though, you have 800-1000 packages to load into 3-4 cars over 3-5 hours. When you have 20 of these bikes arrive on the conveyor belt in a 30 minute window and nowhere to put them (since it's hours from shift end and you can't put them in the delivery truck yet), they get dealt with fast and not so gently. That could easily mean a 3-4 ft drop onto concrete, and a supervisor would be unlikely to care since they know the pressure to go fast. The official policy is "hand to surface" for every package, but in reality you have to work at a pace where this is impractical - so it's ignored apart from egregious abuse of packages.

edit: as for discussion elsewhere here about proper packaging, here's FedEx guidelines/testing: http://www.fedex.com/us/services/pdf/PKG_Testing_Under150Lbs...

Some of the criteria, such as dropping the package 10x from a 30" height, might seem absurd if you haven't seen how the sausage is made. It really isn't.

Here's the current agreement between UPS and Teamsters: https://teamster.org/sites/teamster.org/files/6161478090_mas...

See articles 22, 40, and 41. $11 is current part-time package handler pay (preload), drivers are almost exclusively (with a few exceptions) full time employees, and max out at close to $30/hr. Locals can and do negotiate this higher, that's the national minimum. Also, a huge priority for the union is ensuring that UPS doesn't start using part time drivers instead of FT drivers.

Seasonals shouldn't make less, unless you're counting the $125 union initiation fee that everyone has to pay - a bit silly that it applies to them, probably a great money maker.

asddddd··on Snapchat Releases First Hardware Product, Spectacles
I do think it will be a lot more successful than most here think.

First off, Snapchat (Snap?) isn't Google - their brands are completely different at least among the target audience. Glasses of some sort are inevitably going to be a fashion accessory with extra functionality, and Google is just too uncool. They are the company that wants to knows everything - every interaction refreshes that impression, from Street View vans to Search.

Second, it's sold as a camera on your face, instead of a computer on your face that can do things like recording a video. Even if it's the same hardware, this does make a difference. Everyone understands pseudo-mechanical functions like "press a button to take a 10 second video". Unless the wearer is mashing a button by their face, you can assume it's off. Computers and phones? One might as well assume it's recording video if the operator has the camera pointed at you. The average HNer has a good mental model of how a computer works, but the average person sees it as a magic-infused black box.

The price point looks reasonable, I assume the goal here is strong sales for the holidays. Would expect some celebrities or whoever to be spotted wearing these in the next few months.

asddddd··on The careless errors of credit reporting agencies
File a complaint with the FCC or BBB and (at least with Comcast) they'll suddenly be very eager to fix the problem. Ran into a similar issue where I was told one thing and billed for another, a few days after a BBB complaint they had someone from "executive customer relations" calling/emailing me to get it resolved ASAP.
asddddd··on For Economy, Aging Population Poses Double Whammy
I've spent a decent chunk of time trading volatile assets, and this is really bad advice.

Sure, you can make money. Odds are, you won't, and if the information you have comes from NPR you almost certainly won't.

asddddd··on Genetic link between family SES and children's educational achievement
In that scenario, assuming a 50/50 population split of blue/green people, should you aim for having 50% of each employed at your company or are you justified in hiring fewer blue employees?
asddddd··on Did the Clinton Email Server Have an Internet-Based Printer?
I expect Obama would pardon her if necessary. Worth noting that Bill Clinton pardoned John Deutch for something remarkably similar when he left office.
asddddd··on Pastejacking
Toggling dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled in Firefox has fixed this on every implementation I've seen apart from the PoC here.
asddddd··on 'Black Market Bank' Co-Founder Budovsky Sentenced to 20 Years
Wondering how I can get my money back from this, lost a few grand (legal money) that I deposited just before they got shut down. Saw a vague allusion to contact SDNY about it (only found a mailing address) and haven't seen anything else since.

Was a decent bit of collateral damage since they were fairly popular for offshore forex and bitcoin.

asddddd··on Craig Wright Is Not Satoshi Nakamoto
Tbe reason he's in Britain is because he fled Australia due to the ATO investigating his probably-fraudulent $50m+ R&D tax credits.

It had extremely low usage: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1210773#c6

If the exact same functionality is available as an addon, why is this an issue? Persona is being abandoned as well, BTW.

asddddd··on Why you shouldn't exercise to lose weight
> Why is it that some people, regardless of how much they eat and how little they exercise, never put on weight? That, to me, is the elephant in the room.

This is another problem that people can and have solved. You simply aren't eating as much as you think, so you take meticulous track of your caloric intake, and once you realize you eat a lot less than you thought, force yourself to eat X 100s of calories over normal intake per day. This is likely a quantity of food that causes physical discomfort initially, but it works.

Ignoring issues like Crohn's, "I can't gain weight" is just as much an excuse as "I can't lose weight", although perhaps more socially accepted due to body type voodoo.

Intentionally or not, you seem to have done a solid job of describing existing AML/KYC legal requirements.

asddddd··on The Panama Papers: how the world’s rich and famous hide their money offshore
Far as I've seen they're a typical offshore consultancy that gets paid well to obstruct anyone poking around (see Nevada incident). It doesn't necessitate that their clients were doing illegal stuff, but it does heavily suggest it.

It does seem like very little will come of this in the western world, and I do agree with your last sentence.

A conspiracy theorist would note the curious timing of this high profile but low impact leak - immediately after the unaoil release implicating a lot of multinationals, even though SZ originally acquired these documents a year ago.

asddddd··on Malware scam appears to use GPS data to catch speeding Pennsylvania drivers
Looking at the linked police statement, it seems likely to be spear phishing targeted at a company in the area.

I wouldn't characterize it as a 'coordinated attack'.

asddddd··on Why Stack Overflow Doesn’t Care About Ad Blockers
> I really wish ad-blockers would default to an "block annoying ads only" mode; or some kind of whitelist mode; or even some way to crowdsource so that only annoying ads get blocked.

This is what ABP attempted to do, and the reason why you see people advocating forks or alternative adblockers these days.

asddddd··on AI That Annoys Telemarketers
Yeah, I did some research back then, and it didn't really seem to be by the books. Regardless, if they were the ones that initiated the call, they would all instantly hang up if I suggested they had the wrong number/person/etc and call again later.
asddddd··on AI That Annoys Telemarketers
This never worked for me when I was receiving wrong-number collections calls, they would just hang up and call back the next day. What did work was hanging up, calling the number back, and asking to be added to their do not call list.
asddddd··on No POST after rm -rf /
Fun anecdote, a while back I was installing Windows onto a box with Debian. When I needed to get GRUB set up again, efibootmgr was throwing an inscrutable error when installing the boot loader, but I had no issues manually booting it from GRUB on a USB.

Ended up being the case that the EFI pstore was filled (half full?) with Linux crash dumps from before I ironed out some OC stability issues. Had to manually mount it and then delete files named "dump-type0-" from the BIOS NVRAM to resolve the issue, which was pretty fun.
